Abstract

This study examines the tradition of sifon circumcision practiced by the Dawan ethnic group in East Nusa Tenggara within their social and cultural context. This research aims to understand how the sifon practice functions as a social mechanism that strengthens community cohesion and identity, as well as the accompanying health implications. This study employs a qualitative approach with thematic analysis methods supported by literature reviews and interviews. Bronislaw Malinowski's structural functionalism theory is used to analyze the social functions of this ritual. The findings indicate that sifon circumcision is not only an essential rite of passage within the social structure of the Dawan ethnic group, but it also serves as a means to maintain social and psychological balance within the community. The Dawan ethnic group continues to maintain the sifon practice as a vital part of their cultural identity, despite challenges posed by modernization and increased awareness of health risks.

Abstract

The tradition of exchanging gawan is one of the original cultures of the Ngebruk village community, which is still carried out today as a form of respect for ancestors. "Tukar Gawan," which means "exchanging luggage," refers to the practice of bringing food to a Friday Legi prayer event, where participants exchange their own food for that of others. The purpose of writing this article is to understand the meaning of the gawan exchange tradition in maintaining peace between residents in Ngebruk Village and the dynamics that occur in the gawan exchange tradition. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, the author used observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Peace is a basic thing for human life that will bring calm and harmony to interactions between people. Apart from that, peace also provides an opportunity for humans to build a better civilization than before. We obtained research data through in-depth interviews with Mr. Miskam, the village elder of Ngebruk, and then used Emile Durkheim's theory of social solidarity for descriptive analysis. The results of this research are: (1) Stages or process of implementing the gawan exchange tradition; (2) The tradition of exchanging friends invites residents to help each other; (3) The tradition of exchanging bridesmaids invites people to consciously create harmony and sincerity; (4) The tradition of exchanging gawan invites residents to be sensitive to the conditions of society through giving alms; (5) Prohibition of discriminating against existing differences; (6) Appeal to strengthen ties of brotherhood between residents; and (7) Awareness of human equality; (8) The dynamics that occur in the Javanese tradition of sending Friday Legi prayers in Ngebruk Village, Poncokusumo District, Malang Regency.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the changes in the function of the traditional Minangkabau house (rumah gadang) in Nagari Tuo Pariangan, Tanah Datar Regency. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, as well as qualitative data analysis using the Miles Huberman model. The main research subjects are five individuals selected using purposive sampling, supplemented by two additional subjects, namely the village head and the head of Nagari Tuo Pariangan's tourism awareness group (pokdarwis). The findings indicate that clan members initially used the rumah gadang as a residence, a place for deliberation and consensus, a gathering place for relatives, a venue for traditional ceremonies, a symbol, and also served an educational function. However, the designation of Nagari Tuo Pariangan as a tourist village has shifted the use of rumah gadang to homestays or lodgings. As a result, rumah gadang now primarily houses clan representatives, serves as a venue for large-scale deliberations, and no longer functions as a gathering place for relatives. Instead, it now serves as a business hub, generating economic value for the clan members. The transformation of rumah gadang into homestays is primarily due to the fact that many clan members have relocated to seek their fortune elsewhere, and others have chosen to construct their own homes outside of the rumah gadang. External factors contributing to the change include the awards received by Nagari Tuo Pariangan as the most beautiful village and the developing tourist village award, as well as encouragement from the local tourism awareness group (pokdarwis) in Nagari Tuo Pariangan.

Abstract

Penadaran Village in Grobogan Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, possesses a unique and vibrant cultural heritage that remains largely untapped for tourism development. This research aimed to identify the distinctive local cultural values of Penadaran, analyze their potential for tourism, and formulate strategies for sustainable cultural tourism while preserving local wisdom. Employing a qualitative approach involving observations, interviews, and document analysis, the study engaged local community leaders, policymakers, and tourism stakeholders. The findings revealed Penadaran's rich traditions, such as the "Kirab Budaya" festival, Javanese arts, historic sites, and interfaith harmony, as the village's unique cultural assets. Based on these assets, the research identified potential for cultural tourism, religious tourism, educational tourism, and eco-tourism. Strategies were then developed for harnessing this potential through community involvement, empowerment of local resources, cultural conservation and promotion, multi-stakeholder collaborations, and sustainable planning and management. The novelty of this research lies in its specific focus on Penadaran and its efforts to formulate a comprehensive, culturally sensitive approach to sustainable tourism development. The findings contribute to the growing discourse on cultural heritage preservation and responsible tourism, offering practical insights for Penadaran and similar areas seeking to optimize their cultural tourism potential while safeguarding local traditions.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition where children fail to thrive which is caused by several factors so that it can affect a child's growth and development. Toddlers who experience stunting have bodies that are shorter than the standard height for children their age. The stunting figure in Surakarta City in 2019 shows that 1.35 percent of children aged under two years were stunted, this has decreased compared to the stunting percentage figure in 2018, which was 2.19%. This research will discuss the factors that cause stunting and efforts to reduce the prevalence of stunting in Kestalan Village, Surakarta through the role of empowering family welfare. Data collection techniques were carried out using in-depth interviews and documentation studies. Social action theory by Max Weber is used as an analytical tool to determine the relationship between variables from research results. The research results show that the cause of stunting in children in Kestalan Village, Banjarsari District, Surakarta City is parents' lack of knowledge regarding nutritional intake, lifestyle, congenital diseases, the environment, and most parents smoking. The government and the community have made various efforts to accelerate stunting reduction, one of which is through the contribution of the Family Welfare Empowerment Team (PKK). Efforts to reduce stunting can be carried out through the role of Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK), namely in health services, posyandu activities, collaboration with the government and the private sector in providing additional food assistance (PMT), counseling and assistance, education and motivation.
