Abstract

Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a significant public health concern in Indonesia, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to quantify the impact of risk factors of MDR-TB. A case-control study was conducted at Makassar Community Lung Health Center (BBKPM) in Makassar City. A total of 132 respondents, 66 cases, and 66 controls have participated in the study. Data was analyzed using the Stata version 14 tool, odds ratio (OR), and multiple logistic regression. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified significant risk factors for the occurrence of MDR-TB include previous TB treatment (OR=8.46, 95% CI: 3.278-21.858), positive acid-fast bacilli (AFB) sputum (OR=6.40, 95% CI: 2.525-16.260), and adverse drug event (OR=3.45, 95% CI: 1.008-11.867). The probability of developing MDR-TB is 95.9% if there is previous TB treatment with cases of relapse/loss to follow-up/failed treatment, positive AFB sputum, and adverse drug event. The most dominant risk factor for the occurrence of MDR-TB is a previous TB treatment. We suggest that an efficient directly observed treatment shortcourse (DOTS) strategy, particularly in the management of adverse drug event, overseeing and supporting patients who have recovered from MDR-TB, involves the collaboration of MDR-TB healthcare professionals and patient supporters in the Yamali TB community, moving synergistically as an effort to MDR-TB control and prevention.

Abstract

In West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, approximately 13.01% of individuals aged 15 years or older are affected by mental and emotional disorders, ranking it as the third highest among the 34 provinces. Excessive smartphone use has emerged as a potential influencer of mental health, associated with social networking addiction, shyness, and low self-esteem. This study aimed to examine the relationship between smartphone addiction and mental health issues in adolescents using a cross-sectional design. The sample included 283 randomly selected students aged 15-17 years. Smartphone addiction was measured using the smartphone addiction scale-short version (SAS-SV), and mental health was assessed using the strength and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). The study revealed a significant association (p<0.001) between smartphone addiction and mental health problems among adolescents, with 72.1% of respondents experiencing smartphone addiction and 26.9% classified as having abnormal mental health. These findings emphasize the need for increased awareness regarding the negative impact of excessive smartphone use on adolescent mental health. Schools should play a vital role in addressing this issue through the provision of guidance and counseling services. Future research should investigate causal relationships using longitudinal designs and consider diverse populations to enhance the generalizability of the results.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic reminded people of the importance of proper handwashing. The degree of health risk perceptions and handwashing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic opens essential lessons for delivering water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs across the globe. We measured the relationship between COVID-19 risk perception and the handwashing behavior of 386 Filipinos in a highly urbanized city in the Philippines. Self-made COVID-19 risk perception scale (CRPS) (Cronbach's α 0.93) and handwashing behavior scale (HBS) (Cronbach's α 0.84) were administered face-to-face. The results show that the overall handwashing behavior has a median of 4.1 (frequently), while the interquartile range (IQR) is 0.5. Regression analysis revealed that COVID-19 risk perception has a significant positive association with overall handwashing behavior (B=0.369, p-value <0.05). The COVID-19 risk perception accounts for 36.9% of the variance in handwashing behavior, F (1, 384) =11.6360, p-value=0.0007. This study proposes that public health authorities target people's experiential learning style in designing and delivering intervention programs against non-compliance with proper handwashing.

Abstract

Ensuring proper care for older adults in their homes is becoming increasingly important as the older adult population grows. This paper investigates caregivers' perspectives regarding their care for older adults and their acceptance of e-homecare technology. This is a qualitative study with data collection through interviews with five caregivers representing a range of qualifications. A thematic analysis was conducted to gain insights into their experiences and preferences. The study reveals three primary findings that contribute to enhancing caregiving for older adults: i) the significance of meeting the basic needs of homecare technology, such as medication administration, vital sign monitoring, and nutrition management; ii) the caregivers' attitudes towards the acceptance and integration of e-homecare technology into their practices; and iii) the challenges faced in implementing and utilizing e-homecare technology effectively. These findings highlight the importance of addressing the fundamental requirements of e-homecare and overcoming the obstacles associated with incorporating technology, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to older adults in their homes.

Abstract

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have their eating habits impacted by their traits, such as difficulty remaining seated at the table and exhibiting behaviors during mealtime. This often worries parents and causes stress and anxiety. Given video modeling's potential in helping children with ASD, experts should evaluate its effectiveness for teaching eating skills due to limited research in this area. Thus, the study aim to evaluate the validity of the developed videos of eating skills for children with ASD. For face validity, a focus group discussion was held to obtain experts' feedback on the eating skills video and was transcribed verbatim. Otherwise for content validity, the experts received content validity assessment forms and guidelines via email and the results was analysed using Microsoft excell. Face validity revealed four themes: suitability of videos, video quality and clarity, video instructions suitability, task analysis arrangement, and "other" recommendations. On the other hand, Video 1 and Video 2 scored 0.93 for relevance, clarity, simplicity, and ambiguity for the S-CVI/Ave (scale-level content validity index based on the average method) which was considered acceptable. Video 3 received a satisfactory S-CVI/Ave score of 0.93 for relevance, simplicity, and ambiguity, but its clarity score at 0.91, and still within an acceptable range, though not particularly high. As a conclusion, all task analyses for the videos met the requirement to be considered acceptable. Addressing the suggestions for improvement can increase the video's efficacy in teaching eating skills and relieving parents' concerns.

Abstract

Introducing complementary foods at six months helps supplement nutrients and address potential eating challenges in infants. Childhood eating difficulties can contribute to growth issues. This scoping review aimed to identify the components of feeding rules for infants aged 6-24 months. A systematic search of three electronic databases yielded 5,174 abstracts, with 18 complete articles assessed for eligibility. After eliminating 8 articles, 10 met the criteria. The feeding rules comprise three main components: schedule, environment, and procedure. Adhering to these basic rules can enhance a child's growth rate and reduce the risk of failure to thrive. Responsive feeding is closely linked to these rules, categorized based on feeding schedule, procedures, and environment. Hence, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide counseling on the fundamental principles of complementary feeding.

Abstract

Two-dose primary vaccine administration was the best strategy to reduce the prevalence and severity of COVID-19. Improved immunity and antibody response to the new variant virus by administering a booster vaccine is needed. Health workers are the main priority for administering the mRNA-1273 (Moderna) booster vaccination in Indonesia. This vaccine has high effectiveness, and safety, however, data and evaluation of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) is required. This study aimed to determine the AEFIs of mRNA-1273 booster vaccination in clinical clerkship students as an early adult age group. The research design was a repeated cross-sectional study using purposive sampling technique. There were 214 subjects who met the requirements. Subject filled out an online questionnaire containing evaluation of AEFIs. The most local AEFIs symptoms were pain at the injection site (79.0%), while the common systemic symptoms were headache, drowsiness, weakness, and fever (37.4%; 26.2%; 9.8%; 9.3%). Most AEFIs were felt within 30 minutes to three days. No respondents required hospitalization, experienced anaphylactic shock, became disabled, or died. The AEFIs did not have a significant relationship with gender, history of allergies, co-morbidities, or history of COVID-19. This information is used as a preventive or educational effort to support implementation vaccine in Indonesia.

Abstract

A cross-sectional study was performed to describe self-medication practices of customers at kiosks and minimarkets in District X, Indonesia, during COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. A sample of 98 customers from 67 kiosks, and 100 customers from 52 minimarkets were interviewed using a validated questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the findings. Most drugs purchased at kiosks and minimarkets were general sales drugs, i.e., analgesic-antipyretic (64.3% versus 46.0%); however, prescription drug sales were reported (3.1% vs 3.0%, respectively). Kiosk and minimarket customers purchased medications mainly based on the recommendations of non-health workers (69.4% vs. 34.0%, respectively), or electronic media (36.7% vs. 43.0%, respectively). The reasons to choose kiosks or minimarkets included accessibility, personal preferences, and service quality. Most kiosk/minimarket customers had knowledge on the drug brand names and indications, but only some knew the composition (8.16% vs. 29.0%, respectively) or side effects (9.18% vs. 35.0%, respectively). These findings indicated limited quality assurance on self-medication practices at non-pharmacy outlets.

Abstract

Leaf extracts of Cordyline fruticosa was used as a natural visual indicator for a digital image-based analytical procedure for the measurement of water alkalinity. A smartphone and ImageJ were used to capture and process the images, respectively. This work sought to develop and evaluate a greener strategy of using of Cordyline fruticosa leaf extract as natural indicator, in a digital image-based colorimetric set-up using smartphone. Under optimized conditions, the linear working range was from 40 to 160 ppm of CaCO3, with a calibration sensitivity of 5 x 10-3 ppm and a coefficient of correlation (r2)=0.998. The limit of detection and quantification were 39 ppm and 117 ppm, respectively. A 10,000 ppm CaCO3 solution was tested using the proposed method and the results statistically agree with the results obtained from titrimetric methods. The study presented a simple analytical procedure that can be develop and apply for the assessment of pollution that could pose serious human and environmental health hazards.
