Abstract

Studies on English language learning practices in Sport have received considerable interest from scholars in recent years due to the significance of English skills for graduates in the job market and professional settings. However, there is limited research that has focused on investigating the needs of Sport students in learning English through effective pedagogical approaches that integrate Project-based Learning (PjBL) with 4C skills: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity. This study aims to 1) investigate the specific English learning needs of Sport students in higher education, and 2) examine preferred learning approaches that integrate PjBL with 4C skills. This exploratory sequential mixed-methods design combined quantitative data from structured questionnaires with qualitative insights from interviews, involving 52 sport students (30 males and 22 females) at a higher education institution in Sungai Penuh, Jambi, Indonesia. The findings reveal that sports students require proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar, with a particular emphasis on sports-specific terminology and contexts. Furthermore, the qualitative results indicate that students strongly favor learning approaches that are collaborative, authentic, and project-based. They perceive Project-Based Learning (PBL) as highly effective, particularly when it promotes 4C skills. Students expressed those tasks such as video creation, podcast production, simulations, and team discussions enhance their engagement, confidence, and practical language use. These findings suggest that integrating PjBL with 4C skills into English instruction is essential for meeting the specific language needs of sports students and enhancing their readiness for global professional environments.

Abstract

This present study aims to explore emotional geographies of pre-service teachers in an online teaching practicum program conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the narrative study design, the present study employed video-stimulated recall interviews and reflective journals to collect the data. The data gained from 8 participants was then analyzed by following Hargreaves’ framework of emotional geography. It was found that the pre-service teachers experienced both distance and closeness in the five areas of emotional geography. It was also revealed that the dynamic of the distance and closeness influenced some aspects of the pre-service teachers’ pedagogical competence.

Abstract

One of the basic skills in a foreign language is the ability to read. The purpose of reading is to understand, analyze and explore the contents of the reading material they read. By reading we can more quickly master a foreign language. Academic reading courses are offered in the English Language Education study program as a provision for students to be able to understand academic texts which will be very useful later to enrich their knowledge and will also help them when writing scientific papers such as articles and theses. To be able to study online or outside of main lecture hours, students must have control over their learning process and be responsible for what and how they learn the foreign language (Merriam & Bierema, 2013). This learning strategy is known as Self-Directed learning. Learning with Self-Directed learning can increase students' knowledge, abilities and achievements in learning in the way they choose. This strategy is a mental process that is followed and supported by identifying and searching for information (Suknaisith, 2014).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the attitudes, perceptions of abilities, barriers, and expectations of IAIN Indonesia lecturers in the use of ICT in online English learning. The research method uses "explanatory sequential". The research sample was selected randomly and purposively. Questionnaires and interviews are used to collect the data. The quantitative data were analyzed by the SPSS program, while the interview findings were analyzed qualitatively. 80% of lecturers had positive views toward ICT use during class planning, according to the results (M = 4.2, SD = 0.7). They were thought to have a modest level of ICT proficiency, especially when it came to implementing lessons (M = 3.92, SD = 0.86). According to reports, there were few obstacles, mostly because of inadequate training and a lack of teaching facilities (M = 2.3, SD = 1.1). Expectations were high, particularly with regard to ongoing training and access to ICT infrastructure (M = 4.45, SD = 0.8). The results of this study in general, provide an overview of the attitudes and abilities that must be possessed by lecturers to minimize challenges in the hope of realizing the optimal use of ICT in online English learning.

Abstract

This study examines English lesson plans as outlined by high school educators in the country of Indonesia in relation to the plans’ language as it concerns the key components of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The research takes on a qualitative approach using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to look into the teaching and ideological aspects embedded in lesson plans of Indonesian EFL teachers. Unlike the lesson plans of other countries, Indonesian lesson plans are not devoid of ideologies. They contain the contrasting ideologies of student autonomy and openness, multicultural teaching, and modern methods and tools of teaching. Including Project Based Learning (PBL), Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Culturally Responsive (CRT) teaching demonstrates more inclusiveness and flexibility Then there is the Profil Pelajar Pancasila and the Pancasila state ideology which is sheer ethical and nationalist moralism blended with everyday teaching. The use of Multimodal and other forms of assessment shows the targets set are for the learners to demonstrate critical, collaborative, and digital skills. The inquiry has established how through the analysis of documentary evidence and accounts of interviews, teachers construct and interpret the language of professional theory. The findings hence contribute to knowledge in that the formulation of lesson plans is not purely mechanical, rather, it is an arena where beliefs are contested and agency is exercised in the EFL context.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the Carousel Brainstorming strategy on students' critical reading comprehension. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining a quantitative quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design with qualitative action research. The sample consisted of 30 students selected through purposive sampling, divided into an experimental and a control group. The quantitative findings indicated that the use of the Carousel Brainstorming strategy significantly improved students' critical reading comprehension, with a two-tailed significance of p=0.015. The effect size, as measured by Partial Eta Squared, was 0.610, representing a moderate effect (61%). The qualitative results further supported this finding, showing a progressive increase in students' average critical reading comprehension scores from an initial 43.3% to 53.3% after the first cycle and 73.3% after the second cycle. This research demonstrates that the Carousel Brainstorming strategy is an effective and viable method for enhancing students' critical reading skills. The findings have implications for educators, suggesting that this strategy can be incorporated into teaching practices to improve students' critical thinking and reading abilities.

Abstract

English language learning in high schools in Indonesia still focuses on theory, namely memorizing tenses, practicing grammar, and sentence structure, while communicative skills such as spontaneous speaking and real-life interactions receive very little attention. Previous research shows that students feel low on confidence and limited facilities and practice time. Psychological aspects such as self-confidence, student learning styles, technology integration, and authentic assessment are still rarely an integral part of teaching material design. This study aims to map best practices and weaknesses in the development of constructivist-based English teaching materials in high schools, with an integrative focus on the use of technology, variations in student learning styles, and authentic assessment, so that students' communication skills and confidence are improved. The method used is a literature review from 2018-2024 from national and international journals, proceedings, and research reports. This study uses thematic analysis techniques and framework analysis. The main findings indicate that approaches such as PjBL and CTL that involve projects, simulations, discussions, and real-life interactions can increase student engagement, creativity, critical thinking, and self-confidence. The integration of technology as a learning medium is indeed appealing, but its implementation has not been optimal in supporting authentic communication. Diversity in learning styles strengthens the effectiveness of teaching materials, and authentic assessments help measure students' actual abilities. This study fills a gap in the local literature by combining aspects of technology, learning styles, and authentic assessment within a single framework.

Abstract

In early English education, textbooks strongly influence children’s language acquisition and development. Yet, many prioritize cognitive skills while neglecting emotional and physical growth, limiting their suitability for young learners. This study evaluates the English textbook My Next Words, developed under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum, through an early childhood development lens encompassing cognitive, emotional, and physical dimensions. Using a descriptive design, data were collected from textbook analysis and semi-structured interviews with five English teachers in Lengayang District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. The data were then analyzed by measuring the percentage of each dimension of children’s development to present the majority from three dimensions. The results of this study revealed that while the textbook effectively supports cognitive development (74.1%), it provides minimal attention to emotional (18.5%) and physical (7.4%) growth. Teachers further reported that activities were repetitive and cognitively oriented, restricting creativity and hands-on engagement. These findings highlight a significant gap in English for Young Learners (EYL) resources, where textbooks often lack balance across developmental domains. The study contributes to EYL and textbook development by underscoring the need for more holistic materials that foster not only language skills but also children’s emotional and physical growth.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to assess the effect of the Task Repetition Method on students' reading comprehension at Vocational High School 1 Makassar. Using a quasi-experimental research design, two classes, namely 36 students in the experimental and 36 students in control classes, were tested with pre-tests and post-tests. The data were collected by using reading test. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics from the SPSS 25.0 version. The result showed the students' reading comprehension enhanced more using the Task Repetition Method rather than the Task Rehearsal Method. The experimental class improved from a pretest score of 59.70 to 84.50 (41.54%) in literal comprehension, while the control class improved from 60.10 to 82.96 (38.00%). The control group increased from 58.40 to 79.00 (35.35%) in inferential comprehension, while the experimental group improved from 57.80 to 78.74 (36.28%). Higher proficiency in both comprehension aspects was attained by more students in the experimental class. The Task Repetition Method significantly improved students' comprehension and analysis of texts, according to the results of the t-test.
