Abstract

This study looks into the most common errors made by students in first grade at SMA 70 when writing narratives, particularly when using the simple past tense. To look into and analyze the mistakes made by the students, the study uses a qualitative descriptive methodology. Samples of first-grade student' narrative writing were used to gather data. The investigation found that 67% of all errors were caused by misformation through analysis. These grammatical mistakes reveal a lack of knowledge and expertise in employing the proper forms of the simple past tense. The results of this study provide information about the precise areas in which students have difficulty when writing narratives, particularly when it comes to verb tense. By being aware of these typical mistakes, teachers can create specific instructional strategies to aid students in developing their narrative writing abilities and advancing their command of the simple past tense.

Abstract

This research critically examines how capitalist environmental values, characterized by profit-driven conservation, political manipulation, and market commodification, are represented in Michael Crichton’s State of Fear. Moreover, this study extends Stern and Dietz’s foundational environmental values framework by introducing new categories that reflect the complexities of environmental discourse in contemporary capitalist societies, providing a nuanced understanding of how ecological concerns are intertwined with economic and political interests. This research uses a qualitative approach based on textual data from the novel State of Fear. Then, the data was analyzed using close reading techniques to find indicators of capitalist environmental values, which were then interpreted using environmental value theory, green capitalism, and classical capitalism. The results of this research show that capitalist environmental values can be expressed through three things. The first is profit-driven conservation, which shows that environmental conservation is carried out only based on economic benefits. The second is the use of political and religious power to obscure the exploitation of the environment and society and build a positive image. The last is the creation and mystification of markets, which reflects how environmental issues are transformed into markets and give rise to products that seem to support environmental morality and build an image that disguises environmental damage. Keywords: Capitalist Environmental Value; Capitalism; Profit, Politics; Ecological Discourse

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine. There were two purposes of this research: (1) to identify the types of figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine and (2) to describe the meaning of the figurative language used in fashion and beauty advertisements of Red Digital Magazine. The data source of this research was advertisements from 12 Red Digital Magazine, 15 fashion advertisements, and 12 beauty advertisements published in 2022. The data of this research were sentences written in the texts of the advertisements. These data were analyzed by using the qualitative method. This research collects, analyzes, and interprets data through data collection techniques such as observation, documentation, and questionnaires. Based on Johnson & Arp's (2017) theory, it is shown that there were 7 types of figurative language. Starting from the most frequently occurring, they were overstatement/hyperbole, metaphor, personification, simile, paradox, metonymy, and allegory. Overstatement/hyperbole was the most commonly found in advertisements among those types of figurative language. The use of this type can give an impression and influence to the readers; therefore, it is often used to describe the exaggerated quality of the product. Furthermore, the use of figurative language is one way to improve writing in advertising, using figures of speech can make the memorability of advertising sentences, creates imagination, makes sentences more meaningful, and most importantly increases the interest of the reader.

Abstract

Semiotics is a scientific study or method of analysis used to examine signs in a context of scenarios, images, texts, and scenes in movies into something that can be interpreted. In this qualitative research, the researchers will examine Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with a focus on the difference between denotative meaning (literal meaning) and connotative (deeper or implied meaning) in the representation of visual and verbal symbols in the movie. By examining visual and verbal symbols, such as striped pajamas and barbed wire fences, the research reveals themes of oppression, social inequality, and innocence. The qualitative method includes repeated viewing and detailed note-taking of symbolic elements. This analysis provides insights into how visual media communicates complex historical trauma and moral messages. This movie tells about the friendship between a boy who is the son of the leader of the Nazi armed forces and a boy who is a prisoner living in a concentration camp. This study found that there are 7 elements contained in the film such as the cover, Bruno's family home, concentration camp, striped pajamas, numbers on pajamas, wire fences, and also the friendship between Bruno and Shmuel which illustrate the historical conditions at that time and also reflect the themes of oppression, social differences, injustice, and innocence. The results of this study are expected to deepen the understanding of the use of visual and verbal symbols in film as a tool to convey ideology and cultural insights, as well as moral messages. Keywords: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas; semiotic analysis; denotation; connotation
