Abstract

Abstract

This qualitative study, grounded in social constructivism paradigm and a single case study design, investigated the lived experiences of victims of cold violence in intimate relationships. The study was conducted at the rural Bapong crisis centre in Bapong Village, North-West Province, South Africa. Data were generated through individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews and inductively analysed through reflexive thematic analysis (RTA). The analysis revealed various main themes and subthemes which included inter alia prevalence of cold violence in intimate relationships, insults, confusion and manipulation as a means to maintain cold intimate partner violence (IPV), managing victims access to possessions as a means to maintain cold IPV, emotional and psychological effects and measures and support systems that can effectively aid and enhance the well-being of victims of cold IPV. The findings revealed that cold violence is a common occurrence in intimate relationships. Additionally, the research revealed detrimental emotional and psychological effects stemming from cold violence within intimate partnerships. The results underscore the need for tailored support and intervention approaches for victims of cold IPV. To achieve a more nuanced understanding, more studies are needed within this research niche to refine and guide the development of targeted, context-specific interventions, strategies, and/or guidelines, especially in countries with high levels of IPV such as South Africa.

Abstract

Resilience is a dynamic and diverse process where individuals show psychological functioning despite unpleasant events (trauma). Resilient individuals can use personal abilities to deal with difficult situations and are influenced by the belief held by individuals that every problem can be solved with good results. This is inseparable from understanding within the individual not to judge anyone when dealing with issues. This study aims to show optimism and self-compassion as predictors of resilience in students. The research sample comprised 97 students from a private university in Palembang, Indonesia, who were 18-21 years old and was obtained by a multistage random sampling technique. Research data were obtained by filling out three adaptation scales, namely the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, and Optimism Scale. Data analysis used multiple regression analysis techniques. Cronbach's Alpha coefficient reliability for Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (0.824), Self-Compassion Scale (0.927), and Optimism Scale (0.775). The research results show optimism and self-compassion as predictors of resilience in students

Abstract

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing is one of the most demanding healthcare specialities, with nurses facing significant occupational stress. In India, critical nursing shortages and resource constraints further compound these challenges. Understanding the relationship between sociodemographic factors, perceived stress, and coping strategies is essential for developing targeted interventions. This cross-sectional study examined sociodemographic profile, perceived stress levels, and coping strategies among 184 ICU nurses at a tertiary care hospital in Western India. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and COPE Inventory. Results revealed 70.7% of participants experienced moderate to high perceived stress (48.4% moderate, 22.3% high). Significant associations were found between stress levels and younger age (p<0.001), unmarried status (p<0.001), higher educational qualifications (p=0.004), limited ICU experience (p<0.001), nuclear family structure (p<0.001), and absence of children (p<0.001). Gender, service area, and duty shift showed no significant associations. Nurses predominantly employed adaptive coping strategies, including positive reinterpretation (73.4%), acceptance (66.3%), instrumental social support (65.2%), and active coping (62.5%). Maladaptive strategies were less frequent, with behavioral disengagement at 27.7% and substance use at 13.6%. Religious coping was utilized by 15.8%, reflecting cultural influences. Findings highlight a substantial psychological burden among ICU nurses and identify vulnerable subgroups requiring targeted interventions. The predominant use of adaptive coping suggests existing resilience that can be strengthened through comprehensive support programs, mentorship for younger nurses, and culturally appropriate stress management interventions.

Abstract

The current study explored if Presence and Search for meaning in life mediate the relationship between Spiritual experience and Personal growth. 176 college students complete the meaning in life, spiritual experience, and personal growth surveys. JAMOVI GLM Mediation Model was used to understand the mediation of Presence and Search for Meaning. Findings indicate a full mediation of Presence of Meaning as a mediator between Spiritual experience and Personal growth. However, Search for Meaning fail to obtain a significant mediation. According to our findings, the Search for meaning does not predict Personal growth. Thus, people who perceive spiritual experience as a source of meaning could experience personal growth.
