Abstract

Thread embroidery is one of the techniques for decorating fabrics using gold thread with motifs adapted to the local area, such as in Kampung Sunan Palembang. The art of embroidery crafts in Kampung Sunan Palembang shows that this embroidery is not just a textile artwork, but a cultural heritage rich in meaning and function. Embroidered decorative products function as decoration, one of which is on traditional wedding clothes, household furniture decorations, and wall decorations. The purpose of the study is to describe the variety of embroidery motif decorations, meaning values, and aesthetic functions in the results of Kampung Sunan embroidery products. This research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study found a variety of embroidery motifs, namely tendrils, boards, slanted fans, straight fans, nutmeg seeds, centipede nails, five-finger boards, flowers, and birds, meaningful values that describe social relations reflecting local identity, markers of customs as status symbols, media for inheriting women's values, and tools for uniting communities through collective practices and hereditary traditions. The function is a relationship between the work and the use of objects that are designed effectively, by criteria set based on their usefulness and efficiency, both in terms of appearance and market needs and as a creative result that can be used practically in everyday life. This research is expected to be able to provide a significant contribution in understanding the various functions and meanings of aesthetic values in embroidered cloth products in Kampung Sulaman Angkinan Palembang, and become a reference for further studies related to traditional crafts in Indonesia, especially craft arts in South Sumatra.

Abstract

Character design aims to convey a strong visual and personality identity, as exemplified by successful industry characters such as Spider-Man. The strong identity of Spider-Man has inspired extensive responses in the form of digital art design, including the boundless realm of AI-generated art. The phenomenon of AI’s openness on social media raises questions about the authenticity of designs produced by AI, particularly works featuring Spider-Man as a popular design. Ultimately, within the scope of Visual Communication Design studies, comparing original versus AI-generated Spider-Man character designs through Manga Matrix analysis becomes essential to understand which elements are retained and which distinguish the authenticity of the Intellectual Property’s visual characteristics. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Manga Matrix analysis and focus group discussions (FGD). The results show that similarities in several Manga Matrix elements within AI works indicate that the character still refers to the original Intellectual Property. Conversely, the Personality aspect tends to disappear when the Intellectual Property’s visual elements are modified, resulting in differences from the original visual elements. This research may contribute design recommendations for designers by indicating that Personality aspects can change if the visual elements that compose them are modified by AI

Abstract

Silungkang Songket is one of the crafts of the people of Sawahlunto City which is a superior product in the area. The specialty of Minangkabau songket cloth, especially in the Silungkang area, lies in its very diverse motifs, including the rangkiang motif, the pucuk rebung motif, the bungo canngkeh motif, and so on. Each of these motifs has its own name and meaning, and usually the motifs applied are inspired by plants, animals or objects in the surrounding nature. This study aims to read the elements of signs in Silungkang Songket cloth by choosing one decorative motif as a case study using Roland Barthes' semiotic concept, namely through the analysis of the sign system in the form of denotation, connotation, and myth. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive nature. The results of this study indicate that Silungkang Songket cloth is not just a physical object, but also a sign system that reflects social and cultural values. This study also reveals how the Minangkabau people give symbolic meaning to the cultural work. Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis of Silungkang songket cloth shows that every visual element in the cloth not only functions as an aesthetic decoration, but also as a cultural sign that contains layered meanings. And finally, when viewed from the mythological element, the rangkiang motif on the songket cloth serves to strengthen the Minang cultural narrative about harmony, welfare, and social order based on custom and religion.

Abstract

This study examines the aesthetic values in Pepsodent Dental Health Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) from 1995 to 2023. The main focus of the study is to analyze how these PSAs maintain their visual identity, message consistency, and cultural relevance amidst technological and media developments. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study dissects the visual and verbal communication strategies in each PSA period. The theoretical framework is based on Dharsono Sony Kartika's Postmodern aesthetic theory, with an analysis of visual form and special form, and supported by Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach to examine the relationship between signifiers and signifieds in media texts. The results show that these PSAs consistently maintain key elements such as the iconic tooth character, toothbrush, toothpaste, children as the primary audience, and dentists as representatives of health authorities, supported by the jingle lyrics that remain the same. The visual transformation from 2D to 3D animation, to the use of human actors and animal mascots, demonstrates creative adaptation to changes in audiences and distribution media. This study concludes that the Pepsodent Dental Health PSA is an example of successful long-term visual communication that is able to combine traditional-based health messages with a contemporary aesthetic approach, and is effective in building public awareness of the importance of maintaining dental health through media that is attractive, communicative, and relevant across generations.

Abstract

The APEKSI 23rd Anniversary logo displayed in the 2023 National Working Meeting (Rakernas XVI) in Palembang City not only serves as a symbol of the visual identity of the activity, but also as a symbolic communication medium that conveys cultural messages, institutional values, and a collaborative spirit between city governments in Indonesia. This research is motivated by the urgency to understand how visual elements in logo design are able to represent local identity while depicting nationalist values in the context of local government visual communication. The purpose of this research is to interpret the visual meaning contained in the logo through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, which divides the meaning process into three levels: denotative, connotative, and mythological. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with visual analysis techniques on logo design elements, including the modification of the number "23" which is formed to resemble a pyramid house as a representation of traditional Palembang architecture, the integration of stylized Songket motifs into typography, the selection of symbolic colors such as red, gold, and blue, and the use of sans-serif style capital letters. The research results show that the APEKSI 2023 logo is not only an aesthetically pleasing visual work but also contains a narrative about cultural identity, local wisdom, and institutional ideological values. Therefore, this logo can be interpreted as an effective visual communication symbol, meaningful, and relevant in today's cultural and institutional context.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the meaning and representation of emotions depicted on the covers of the “Seri Kenali Emosi” (Know Your Emotion Series) books, published by Tentang Anak. Adopting Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, the study systematically analyzes the visual and textual signs present. The study’s core data consists of four specific book covers from the series, all release on July 23, 2022, a date chosen to align with National Children’s Day. Data collection involved both direct observation of these physical book covers, yielding concrete primary data, and a comprehensive literature review, where of relevant scholarly sources like books, journals, theses, and relevant websites. The analyzes involved identifying and categorizing visual and textual elements on each cover into Peirce’s three sign categories: icons (signs physically resembling their object), index (signs with a direct causal or existential links), symbols (signs whose meaning is based on convention). By applying this detailed semiotic analysis, this study investigates how three specific sign types work together to communicate complex emotional messages. The findings are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the semiotic strategies used in children’s book cover design, especially in depicting and communicating various emotional nuances effectively to young audiences and their parents.

Abstract

Textile crafts in South Sumatra have existed since the era of Sriwijaya and developed rapidly hundreds of years ago, particularly during the Palembang Sultanate period, one of which is batik preserved in the collection of the Balaputra Dewa Museum. The museum plays an important role as a medium for education, conservation, and cultural promotion at both national and international levels. The displayed collection serves as a means of cultural diplomacy that showcases the richness of South Sumatra’s art, history, and traditions to the outside world. South Sumatran batik holds a long historical value and experienced significant growth during the Palembang Sultanate era. The urgency of this research problem lies in the lack of academic documentation that elaborates on its aesthetic values, both intrinsic and extrinsic. As a cultural product, South Sumatran batik reflects the natural wealth, history, and culture of the local community. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature study to obtain information. The stages of data analysis involve data identification, data reduction, data analysis, and synthesis. The theoretical approaches employed are Stuart Hall’s representation theory and Jakob Sumardjo’s aesthetic theory to address the formulated research problems. The results of the study show that the batik collection at the Balaputra Dewa Museum generally features distinctive South Sumatran motifs that represent the natural environment, traditions, and belief systems of the local community. Thus, South Sumatran batik serves as a unique cultural identity with philosophical value, making it important to continuously preserve through scientific documentation, art education, and the active role of museums.

Abstract

Cultural posters serve as a primary medium for communicating the identity and values of Malay cultural heritage to the public. However, few in-depth studies have analyzed the changes in visual and formal aspects of posters over the years, particularly in the context of the Kenduri Seni Melayu in Batam, Riau Islands. This research aims to identify and analyze the development of visual and formal elements in the design of the “Kenduri Seni Melayu” posters from 2022 to 2024, as well as to formulate recommendations for enhancing their visual effectiveness. The study employs a qualitative approach with a non-experimental observational design. Official posters from 2022, 2023, and 2024 were analyzed by 54 Visual Communication Design (DKV) students after receiving preparatory training on DKV perspectives, descriptive analysis, and formal analysis. Data collection was conducted through a Google Form survey, covering the identification of color, typography, ornamentation, composition, balance, repetition, and grouping. The inclusion criteria required active DKV students who had participated in the training session. Data were thematically analyzed and tabulated by year. The results indicate significant developments in layout, color use, typography, and the diversity of Malay cultural ornaments. The 2022 poster tended to be asymmetrical and heavily populated with dancer elements; the 2023 poster introduced more balanced compositions with clearer groupings; and the 2024 poster highlighted systematic visual structures, ornament harmony, and emphasis on guest star figures. All posters consistently displayed Malay motifs, although variations in ornament “density” remained evident. Overall, the “Kenduri Seni Melayu” posters from 2022 to 2024 demonstrate a positive evolution in visual structure, layout, and cultural identity consistency. Further improvements are needed in ornament arrangement and information grouping to optimize the effectiveness of visual communication in future designs

Abstract

The rapid development of technology and intense exchange of information has caused the younger generation to be easily influenced by outside cultures. This has resulted in the traditional food of Kraton Yogyakarta, which is full of philosophy and deep cultural values, is threatened to be forgotten by the current generation, especially Generation Z in Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research and design is to focus on efforts to preserve traditional food through board game media integrated with Augmented Reality technology to educate the importance of traditional cuisine as a regional cultural identity. The design method uses the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, which consists of needs analysis, game conceptual design, prototype development, trial implementation, and effectiveness evaluation. This method was chosen because it provides a systematic structure in designing an effective gaming experience. The results of the study indicate that there is a crisis of knowledge regarding traditional culinary culture among Generation Z in Yogyakarta, caused by a lack of media that presents such content in a visually appealing and technologically relevant manner. The design results show that board games with Augmented Reality technology can create an interactive and immersive educational experience and increase Generation Z's understanding of the food philosophy of the Yogyakarta Palace. This research and design is expected to contribute to the development of interactive, immersive, and sustainable educational media.
