Abstract

Clean and healthy living behaviours are one of the most important factors in preventing and controlling basic diseases that can be taught to children (Asri, 2025). One simple but highly effective way to maintain children's health is through the habit of washing hands with soap (Smith et al., 2022). According to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO), washing hands with soap can reduce the risk of diarrhoea by up to 40% (WHO, 2022). This community service aims to increase knowledge and clean living habits through proper hand washing practices as an effort to prevent intestinal parasite infections from an early age in kindergarten children. The results of this community service show that kindergarten children's participation in healthy lifestyle activities, such as hand washing, can reduce the risk of intestinal parasite infections, especially at important times such as before eating, after using the toilet, or after playing (Siregar, 2024). This community service is expected to encourage children, parents, educators, and the community to be more active in introducing and implementing clean and healthy living behaviours. Thus, this activity is expected to improve children's health and development holistically and sustainably. Keywords: Handwashing, Infection Prevention, Kindergarten Children, PHBS

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease that often leads to chronic complications, particularly foot complications that may reduce independence and quality of life among the elderly. One preventive strategy to reduce diabetic foot complications is diabetic foot exercise, which aims to improve blood circulation, joint flexibility, and foot muscle strength. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of elderly people in performing diabetic foot exercises independently in Village Mangir Lor. A descriptive-participatory approach was applied through initial observation, education, demonstration, repeated practice, and evaluation. The participants consisted of six elderly individuals with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic foot exercise training was conducted three times per week for 20–30 minutes using simple media in the form of newspapers. Evaluation was carried out qualitatively by observing participants’ practical skills, participation, and enthusiasm. The results indicated an improvement in participants’ knowledge and ability to perform diabetic foot exercises independently, along with high levels of participation. This activity has the potential to serve as a preventive effort to reduce diabetic foot complications and is recommended for sustainable implementation in community settings.

Abstract

Appropriate and safe medication use is essential for maintaining public health across all age groups. Improper home medication management, including incorrect storage, irregular dosing schedules, and limited awareness of side effects, may increase health risks. This community service program aimed to improve knowledge, skills, and awareness regarding home medication management and side effect awareness. The activity was conducted in Dusun Destan, Bambanglipuro, Bantul Regency, involving 66 participants from various age groups. An educational approach was applied through interactive counseling sessions supported by educational leaflets containing information on proper medication storage, dosing schedule management, and early recognition and management of medication side effects. Evaluation was carried out informally through observation and question-and-answer sessions. The results demonstrated a noticeable improvement in participants’ knowledge in all discussed aspects, including medication storage, dosing schedules, and awareness of side effects. Participants also showed increased concern for medication safety in daily use. This activity has the potential to reduce medication-related errors and contribute to improved quality of life through safer and more rational medication use at the household level.

Abstract

Minor wounds are common health problems in daily life and may lead to infection if not managed properly. In many communities, home-based wound care practices are still influenced by traditional habits and a lack of medically validated information. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge regarding simple wound management at home as a preventive measure against infection. The activity was conducted in Mangir Kidul Hamlet, Sendangsari Village, Pajangan Subdistrict, Bantul Regency using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 30 adult participants were selected through purposive sampling. Health education was delivered through interactive lectures and demonstrations of simple wound care techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had undergone content validity and reliability testing. The results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 56.3 in the pre-test to 82.7 in the post-test. Wilcoxon signed-rank test analysis indicated a statistically significant difference in knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention (p < 0.05). This program demonstrates that simple wound care education is effective in improving community knowledge and has the potential to reduce the risk of wound infection at the household level.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases among the elderly and can reduce quality of life if not properly managed. Non-pharmacological interventions such as health education and hypertension exercise are effective strategies to control blood pressure. This community service activity aimed to improve elderly knowledge and assist blood pressure control through health education and hypertension exercise. The activity was conducted in Mangir Lor Village, Sendangsari, Pajangan, Bantul Regency, involving five elderly participants aged 64–75 years. The methods included initial observation, health education on hypertension, hypertension exercise practice, and monitoring exercise implementation three times per week. The results showed an improvement in the elderly’s understanding of hypertension and the benefits of physical activity, as well as a tendency toward decreased blood pressure after regularly participating in hypertension exercise. Participants also demonstrated good enthusiasm and were able to recall the educational material provided. This activity indicates that combining health education with hypertension exercise can serve as an effective promotive and preventive approach to hypertension control among the elderly at the community level.

Abstract

Routine health checks are essential strategies for the early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in communities. This study was conducted in Dusun Mangir Tengah, Sendangsari, Pajangan, Bantul Regency, involving 68 residents aged <20 years (15), 21–40 years (25), and >40 years (28). The examination included blood pressure, blood glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol, accompanied by brief education on healthy lifestyle management. Results indicate that blood pressure increases with age, with residents >40 years classified as hypertensive or prehypertensive. Most participants had normal blood glucose and uric acid levels, though some adults and elderly approached high thresholds. Cholesterol levels were elevated in older adults, indicating potential risks of heart disease and hypertension. These findings emphasize the importance of community-based health screening as a tool for early detection, education, and preventive intervention. Regular educational programs, periodic screenings, and health promotion activities are recommended to enhance community awareness and enable effective NCD risk management
