Abstract

This study investigates the historical context and multifaceted impact of the Tengku Agung Sultanah Latifah Bridge construction in Siak Regency, Riau, spanning the period from 2001 to 2011. Prior to its construction, the inhabitants of Siak Sri Indrapura City encountered significant challenges stemming from restricted access across the Siak River, a crucial national waterway and primary transportation artery. Dependence on pontoons, ferries, or traditional wooden canoes led to extensive queues, prolonged travel times, and inherent safety hazards, particularly for schoolchildren. These impediments severely hindered economic and social development, causing Siak to lag behind other districts and earning it the moniker of a 'ghost town. In response to these pressing issues, the inaugural Regent of Siak, Arwin AS, initiated the bridge project in 2002. The undertaking encountered considerable resistance, including opposition from the central government and legal disputes from shipping companies concerned about navigational disruptions. Nevertheless, through persistent efforts by the local government, the bridge was successfully completed and formally inaugurated in 2007 by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Currently, the Tengku Agung Sultanah Latifah Bridge functions not merely as critical infrastructure, enhancing transportation and stimulating economic activity, but also as a prominent tourist destination. This research specifically aims to delineate the community's challenges before the bridge's construction, detail the construction process, and analyze its profound impact on the developmental trajectory of Siak Regency.

Abstract

This article examines the representation of labor in the newspaper De Locomotief from 1864 to 1870, when the Dutch East Indies underwent a shift from liberal agrarian policies to a system of forced cultivation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the ideological position of De Locomotief in understanding labor issues in Java and its relationship to colonial political changes at the end of the 19th century. Using the Delpher digital archive of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek as the primary source, historical methods were employed through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. To analyze the relationship between language, ideology, and power in media texts, Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis methodology was used. The research shows that De Locomotief displayed a critical attitude towards colonial policy through its reporting on labor exploitation, contract violations, inadequate wages, and the debunking of the myth of “indigenous laziness” as colonial legitimation. Unlike its contemporary colonial newspapers, such as Java-Bode and Soerabaijasch Handelsblad, De Locomotief always raised labor issues as structural problems. This study confirms that colonial media played an important role in creating critical discussions that contributed to changes in agrarian policy leading up to the enactment of the Agrarische Wet in 1870.

Abstract

Indonesia's bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia have strategic value in the political, economic, social, and religious fields in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Within this framework, public diplomacy is an important instrument of foreign policy for shaping international public perception and building a positive image of the country. This study aims to examine the implementation of Indonesia's public diplomacy in Saudi Arabia through its participation in the 2018 Janadriyah Festival using Nicholas J. Cull's theory of public diplomacy. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with secondary data obtained through literature studies from books, theses, dissertations, journals, scientific articles, and credible online sources. The results of the study show that Indonesia's participation in the 2018 Janadriyah Festival was driven by shared values with Saudi Arabia, particularly in the aspects of religion and education. Government support was also a major factor because this activity was in line with Indonesia's foreign policy direction. The festival played a role in introducing and preserving Indonesian culture in Saudi Arabia. Based on Cull's analysis, Indonesia's public diplomacy is reflected through five elements, namely listening, advocacy, cultural diplomacy, exchange diplomacy, and international broadcasting, which are manifested through the formation of public opinion, institutional cooperation, cultural strengthening, community interaction, and media collaboration.

Abstract

This study examines Semarang’s role in the colonial opium trade during the transition from the pachtstelsel to the Opiumregie between 1901 and 1930. Employing a qualitative historical method using Koloniaal Verslag, Staatsblad regulations, newspaper archives, and supporting literature, the research traces the shift from private monopolies controlled by Chinese pachter to a centralized state monopoly. The findings reveal that the Opiumregie increased colonial revenue, strengthened administrative control, and reorganized distribution through government-managed depots, positioning Semarang as a principal hub in both legal and illegal opium networks. As a major port, Semarang facilitated smuggling routes that persisted despite tighter regulation. These developments had significant social impacts, particularly on port laborers who faced growing dependency, declining welfare, and rising urban problems linked to addiction and criminality. The study’s novelty lies in highlighting Semarang’s strategic yet understudied role within the opium economy of colonial Java, illustrating how state policy, maritime trade, and local social dynamics were closely intertwined.

Abstract

Technological developments have made online gaming a part of teenagers' lifestyles, but excessive use can trigger addiction (gaming addiction). This phenomenological qualitative study aims to explore the meaning of online gaming addiction among teenagers, its relationship with self-identity, motivation to play, and social interaction patterns. The research subjects were three individuals (aged 13 – 16 years) who played online games for more than three hours per day and were active at least four to five times a week, using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through observation and interviews with research respondents. The results showed that online games are perceived as a space for virtual identity construction, emotional regulation, and alternative social interaction. Adolescents with online gaming addiction experience shifts in self-identity, gaming motivations driven by challenge, stress avoidance, and the need for recognition, as well as significant changes in social interaction patterns, particularly reduced quality of family relationships. This study highlights that online gaming addiction affects not only individual behavior but also adolescents’ real-life social dynamics.

Abstract

Women's involvement in Indonesian politics is an essential part of fulfilling constitutional rights and strengthening inclusive democracy. Although the 30% quota policy for women's representation has been stipulated in election regulations, its implementation at the political party level has not been fully optimal, including in the National Awakening Party (PKB) of North Sumatra. This study aims to analyze the position, rights, and opportunities of women within the structure and leadership of PKB North Sumatra and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors for women's political involvement. The study used a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical case study approach through in-depth interviews with PKB North. Sumatra female administrators and cadres as primary data, and supported by party documents, regulations, and scientific literature as secondary data. The results show that PKB North Sumatra normatively and structurally does not apply gender discrimination, because women and men have equal rights to vote, be elected, express opinions, and hold strategic positions based on the principles of suitability and capacity. However, quantitatively, women's representation in PKB North Sumatra's legislative body is still relatively low and has not reached the ideal quota, which is influenced by cultural, structural, and electoral dynamics barriers, rather than internal party restrictions. Nevertheless, the North Sumatra National Awakening Party (PKB) has made efforts to empower women through its Women's National wing, political education, and strengthening women's cadre development. This research confirms that women's political involvement in the North Sumatra PKB has moved beyond mere administrative fulfillment to more substantive participation, although ongoing strengthening is still needed to optimize women's representation in the political process and public policy.

Abstract

This study aims to develop digital learning media in the form of interactive flipbooks (Flipgames) to enhance students' creativity in history learning. The background of this study is the minimal use of digital media, which has resulted in low student engagement. Flipgames integrate multimedia elements (images, videos, audio, animations) with educational games (quizzes, puzzles, interactive challenges). The research used the R&D method with the Borg and Gall model and a descriptive quantitative approach, involving 10th grade students at SMK PGRI 2 Sidoarjo through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results of expert validation of the media (92%) and material (88%) showed high feasibility, while field trials received a positive response from 98.99% of students. The validity test showed that 13 of the 15 items were valid, and Cronbach's Alpha reliability of 0.812 indicated high consistency. The findings confirm that Flipgames are effective in increasing student creativity and engagement, with the novelty of integrating game-based learning in a digital flipbook format.
