Abstract

The purpose of this research is to see how Kompas Newspaper viewed Indonesia’s political devolepment in 1998, especially in the context of transition after the fall of New Order regime. This research focuses on three main aspects: 1) Results the research shows that Kompas Newspaper was first established on June 28 1965 by P.K. Ojong and Jakob Oetama. Kompas was created because the Indonesian Catholic Community needed an independent and reliable communication medium. It has journalism principle that must be cautious, neutral, and focused on the public interest. 2) After the New Order regime collapsed in May 1998, Indonesia entered a period of political transition towards open democracy. Kompas functioned as a strategic media that bridged the public interest with the dynamics that occurred among the political elite.  In 1999, Kompas discussed many important issues such as democratic elections after the New Order and the strengthening of democratic institutions such as the DPR and the Supreme Court through news, editorials, and opinion sections. 3) Kompas' perspective on political change since 1998 can be categorized as constructive, although critical.  This media shows the decline of the New Order as an important momentum to rebuild a fair and democratic political order. Kompas actively criticized various government policies, including addressing corruption, human rights violations, and political instability. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with the approach of content analysis of news archives, editorials, and opinions published in Kompas newspaper during 1998-1999. The study shows that Kompas has a strong history as a media that maintains independence and prudence in handling political issues. During the New Order era, Kompas was an important media that carried out transformation, enabling discussions on democratization, information disclosure, and reformation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms of psychological adaptation among the people of Klaten toward the Nyadran tradition amid the currents of modernization. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four informants representing different generations and professions, and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis as proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The findings indicate that the Nyadran tradition continues to play a significant role in shaping cultural identity and resilience among the Klaten community. Three main themes emerged: (1) emotional and spiritual attachment to the tradition, (2) the roles of social structure and gender in cultural preservation, and (3) the tension between traditional values and modern lifestyles. The older generation tends to maintain conventional practices with strong emotional commitment, whereas the younger generation demonstrates reinterpretation of cultural values through digital media as a form of contextual adaptation. These findings underscore that the psychological adaptation process within the Klaten community reflects cultural resilience (Panter-Brick & Eggerman, 2021), defined as the capacity to preserve the essence of cultural values amidst social change. This study contributes to the enrichment of cultural psychology literature by highlighting intergenerational dynamics in the preservation of local traditions, as well as the importance of intergenerational narrative transmission in sustaining cultural relevance in the future.

Abstract

This research examines the method of calculating auspicious days in an East Java Primbon manuscript and explores its embedded cultural meanings. The study is based on a single manuscript written by Museri in 1970, currently preserved in Baturaja, South Sumatra. Employing a qualitative method with a philological approach specifically through paleographic and codicological examination combined with content analysis this study identifies both the textual structure and symbolic systems contained in the manuscript. The analysis reveals that the computation of auspicious days follows a numerical algorithm integrating the weton (day and market day), pancawara, and astrological elements, all of which are interrelated in determining fortune and suitability for life events. The manuscript also illustrates ritual practices such as tingkepan (seven-month pregnancy ceremony), reflecting the harmony between cosmological beliefs and social ethics in Javanese tradition. This research contributes to the preservation of Javanese local wisdom by documenting and interpreting a handwritten Primbon text, demonstrating its continued relevance as a cultural guide amid modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of reward implementation on students’ learning motivation in History among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri Mumbulsari. A quantitative approach was employed using a simple linear regression method. The sample consisted of 71 students selected through random sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and supporting documentation. The results showed that the use of reward strategies—such as verbal praise, additional points, and simple gifts—had a significant positive effect on students’ learning motivation. The regression equation obtained was Y = 12.174 + 0.635X, with a t-value of 9.106 (greater than the t-table value of 1.667) and a significance level of 0.000 (< 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.546, indicating that 54.6% of students’ learning motivation was influenced by the reward variable, while the remaining 45.4% was attributed to other factors.

Abstract

Banyuwangi is increasingly prominent with its annual cultural performances. A variety of cultural products are presented to the public, including rituals, dance, music, and literature. All these are believed to be the legacy of the Blambangan Kingdom. Museums can play a role in Banyuwangi's efforts to demonstrate its identity to the public by exploring the background of the community's ancestral kingdom, the Blambangan Kingdom. This also underlies the purpose of this research, which is to analyze information about the history and indigenous knowledge of the Blambangan Kingdom community in the collections at the Omahseum Museum. This museum houses artifacts left behind by the kingdom. We used qualitative research with a museum studies approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, collection analysis, text analysis, and documentation of artifacts. The results show that the Omahseum Museum collections contain historical information and holds narrative evidence of the formation of Blambangan into Banyuwangi. The collections also contain information about local knowledge about the creation of writing media from palm leaves, natural ink, literary arts, clay processing, and metallurgy. The conclusion of this research is that the collection at the Omahseum Museum contains historical information (locations, name of Banyuwangi, and war) and indigenous knowledge (written media, literary arts, clay processing, and metal processing). The collection has the potential to become a source of local history teaching and museum interpretations based on local knowledge. The results of this study can inspire museum managers to expand their information services on the local knowledge behind each collection.

Abstract

This research, entitled "The Development of the National Education Curriculum from the Old Order Era to the Reform and Decentralization Era (1947–2022)," is motivated by the importance of the curriculum as a strategic instrument in determining the direction, content, and quality of national education. The curriculum serves not only as a technical guide for learning but also as an ideological, social, and political tool for shaping the nation's character in accordance with the dynamics of the times. The purpose of this research is to analyze the development and changes in the Indonesian national education curriculum from the Old Order era, the New Order era, to the Reform and Decentralization era. The research method used is historical, with four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that during the Old Order era (1947–1965), the curriculum was oriented towards the formation of national character and the strengthening of national identity through the 1947 Lesson Plan, the 1952 Detailed Lesson Plan, and the 1964 Curriculum, which emphasized the Pancawardhana concept. During the New Order era (1968–1998), the curriculum became a tool for centralistic state ideological control, as reflected in the 1968, 1975, 1984, and 1994 Curricula which focused on political stability and Pancasila values. Entering the Reformation and Decentralization era (2004–2022), the direction of education policy shifted toward a decentralized and competency-based paradigm. The Competency-Based Curriculum (2004), the KTSP (School-Based Curriculum) (2006), the 2013 Curriculum, the Emergency Curriculum (2020–2021), and the Independent Curriculum (2022) .

Abstract

This study examines the forced cultivation system or culturstelsel in Banyumas until the era of industrialisation, focusing on the socioeconomic impact of the Kalibagor Sugar Factory. This study employs historical methods, including the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing primary sources such as colonial archives and supported by secondary sources. The findings of this study indicate that Cultuurstelsel in Banyumas was an adaptation of the land tax policy, which aimed to produce export commodities and increase colonial revenue. Established in 1839, the Kalibagor Sugar Factory functioned as the main hub for the implementation of this system through the processing of sugas cane from surrounding village lands. Entering the era of industrialisation, the use of steam engines brought major changes to the socio economic order, as the wage labour system replaced the traditional agrarian pattern. This research concludes that the Kalibagor Sugar Factory transformed the pattern of Banyumas society from agrarian to industrial, as well as creating economic dependence by giving rise to a capitalist system and social inequality between the local elite and workers.

Abstract

This study explains the reasons behind the deployment of the Kontingen Garuda I to Egypt and the tasks carried out during their mission from January to September 1957. The research uses the historical method, which includes several steps such as topic selection, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. In this study, the author uses primary sources such as newspapers and publications from the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Indonesia that are relevant to the research theme. Based on the analysis of several primary sources, the deployment was motivated by the escalating tensions between Egypt and France, the United Kingdom, and Israel during the Suez Crisis. The dispatch of Kontingen Garuda I represented Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy as well as its effort to participate in maintaining world peace. While in Egypt, the Kontingen Garuda I was assigned to maintain security along the Egypt–Israel border and to repair roads and infrastructure in their area of operation.

Abstract

Modern governance systems based on law place discretion as an important tool for state administrative officials, especially to ensure the continuity of public services in situations of legal vacuum or emergency. Previous studies have not comprehensively examined the relationship between legal basis, practical application, and ethical and accountability challenges in the use of discretion. This study aims to fill this gap by analysing the concept, legal basis, and implementation of discretion in Indonesian government administration. This study uses a normative legal research method with a legislative approach and is supported by a literature study from Google Scholar secondary data. The results show that although discretion has strong legal legitimacy, its implementation often causes irregularities due to weak oversight mechanisms and low ethical integrity among some public officials. The use of discretion without moral consideration and without upholding the principle of accountability has the potential to harm the interests of the community and reduce public trust. This study emphasises the importance of strengthening the integration between legal norms, ethical standards, and oversight systems so that the practice of discretion is in line with the values of justice, transparency, and responsible public service.
