Abstract

The song “Saat Kau Telah Mengerti” (lit. “When You Have Understood”), recorded by Virgoun, was streamed over a million times on YouTube when it was released in January last year and has been circulated in various edited versions on various online platforms. The lyrics present messages of hopes and wishes from parents to their children, thus touching the hearts of its listeners. Through the song's music, lyrics, and video clips, the objective of this research is to interpret and explore the meaning of parents' communication with their children. This study focuses its research question on elements utilized in the lyrics, music, and video clips of the song. This research analysis uses a qualitative approach with an interpretative paradigm based on Louis Hjelmslev's semiotic method and the validity test, which will be achieved through triangulation. Through Hjelmslev's semiotic research on forms and substance of expression and content, this research found that a communication gap exists between parents and their children. The gap stems from the generational differences between fathers and daughters, which this song seeks to bridge by encouraging the child to empathize with the parents. The actions of parents who strive for their children's benefit can occasionally be misinterpreted by their children as something negative. Based on the results, the study recommends music as an effective tool for conveying messages to mitigate parent-child communication gap

Abstract

This research aims to unveil one of the compositional works of the Sono Seni Ensemble Surakarta music group, titled 'Boogie Rahayu.' This work offers a distinct paradigm and compositional technique in comparison to the works of typical progressive keroncong orchestra groups. The study endeavors to reveal the composition of 'Boogie Rahayu' through an analysis that integrates source knowledge of karawitan music structures, keroncong playing techniques, attitudes towards sound sources, and an openness to presenting new harmonies. Examining this compositional work contributes to addressing the issue of creativity stagnation in the Javanese style of keroncong. The research adopts a musicological and cultural approach, focusing on the primary objects of the work and the performers. Data collection techniques involve field observations and interviews conducted through both online and offline methods, as well as document and artifact studies using conventional and online methods. During the analysis stage, this study employs an emic approach, considering the composer's thoughts and beliefs, alongside a musicological approach that delves into musical structure, rhythm changes, cadence interpretation, and chord harmony. The results of the research indicate that 'Boogie Rahayu' introduces a new avenue of development capable of transcending artistic and aesthetic boundaries among keroncong music, Javanese style, and Javanese karawitan

Abstract

Muslim Designer Community (MDC) is a forum for Muslim designers to actively conduct da’wah activities through visual media, especially in the form of posters. In this article, however, the theme that was chosen to be discussed is da’wah posters on Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha has an important value in Muslims because it concerns many things in Muslim life, both the vertical relationship between servants and their God, and the horizontal relationship between humans and humans and the social environment. This research focuses on the initial step in understanding MDC's da'wah posters, especially the posters related to Eid-Al-Adha as a multifaceted ritual in Islamic celebratory holy day, by dissecting the structure of da'wah posters posted by MDC through their social media account. This research uses a qualitative method. Data analysis was carried out using Roland Barthes' semiotics, namely by revealing visual markers as signifiers in da'wah posters. The result shows that the Eid al-Adha theme posters discussed above represent Qurban as the main message conveyed in the da'wah media using design elements in the form of artwork, visualizing the commands in the Qur'an and Hadith. Title and Image have a dominant role in conveying the message in the da'wah poster. The implication of this study shows that Da'wah posters are the implementation of religious values into the field of visual communication design, resulting in a new strategy of preaching using visual media. The combination of visual communication design and religious ideology has an important role in providing stimulus about religious messages to the audience.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has a variety of cultural arts, one of which is shadow puppetry (Wayang). Wayang, in a staged, simple, and minimalist manner, is called Wayang Climen. Wayang Climen has been performed since the COVID-19 pandemic as a solution to keep working while still complying with health protocols. Utilization through YouTube social media attracts people to watch and provide opinions through comments. This opinion is beneficial and can be used as a feasibility study through sentiment analysis information classified as positive, negative, and neutral opinions. Sentiment analysis determines a person's opinion and tendency to opinionated sentences. The methods used are Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Naïve Bayes (NB). The dataset comes from YouTube comments of Dalang Seno and Ki Seno Nugroho. The best accuracy is generated by SVM (70.29%). The positive sentiment shows the public's appreciation for the Wayang Climen performance, which ultimately represents the performance even though it is staged densely. This research contributes to effectively utilizing digital platforms for cultural preservation and audience engagement during challenging times, demonstrating the potential for innovative solutions in traditional arts and entertainment.

Abstract

This scholarly article investigates the impact of diverse songs on second language (L2) learning, emphasizing cognitive, kinesthetic, and emotional engagement. This research recognizes songs as literary expressions, specifically through the lens of lyrics as literary texts, and explores their historical and ongoing significance in L2 education. Beyond linguistic proficiency, the article delves into the broader implications of integrating songs into language education. Educators observe that incorporating music fosters a positive learning environment, contributing to increased motivation and engagement among learners. The discussion in this article addresses the gaps in the integration of literary texts, including songs, into language education. It criticizes the tendency of tertiary foreign language programs to overemphasize 'literature' at the expense of linguistic aspects and the opposite approach at the lower secondary level, which focuses on linguistic aspects while neglecting literary involvement. The results of this literature review highlight the need to recognize the profound impact that literary texts, including songs, have on individual learners, urging the incorporation of artistic elements into language teaching practices in a more comprehensive and balanced manner. This article emphasizes that literature, through stories and narratives, contributes to the emotional development of learners, fostering empathy and understanding of 'otherness.' This research advocates the balanced and thoughtful integration of literature in FL classrooms, recognizing its capacity to go beyond language instruction and contribute to broader education and individual growth.

Abstract

Empon-empon stems, considered agricultural waste, present an untapped resource for crafting natural fiber products. While materials like banana stems, water hyacinth, and jute are commonly used for this purpose, empon-empon stems offer a novel alternative. This study explores the potential of empon-empon stems in creating ropes and other homeware products, aiming to not only reduce agricultural waste but also to provide additional income streams for farmers. The research methodology involves a comprehensive process of harvesting, separating, drying, and twisting empon-empon stems into rope. Additionally, a design-driven material (DDM) approach is employed to convert the rope into various products such as baskets, planter stands, and trays. The DDM approach includes analyzing material characteristics, visual exploration, creating shop drawings, and producing prototypes. The results demonstrate that empon-empon rope products are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also carry a unique aroma, adding to their appeal. These products have the potential to address the shortage of natural fibers in the craft industry and can serve as an alternative material for interior design applications. In conclusion, this research highlights the feasibility of utilizing empon-empon stems as a sustainable material for crafting innovative homeware products. By transforming agricultural waste into valuable goods, this approach contributes to both environmental sustainability and economic development in rural areas.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of digital mapping and GIS in combination with 3D geo-visualization in depicting landscapes and cultural heritage sites. As computers evolve in their processing capabilities (graphics card, processor, memory speed), so does the graphical output representing our world that can be done in less time. Short processing times and available highly sophisticated software create conditions to test existing models of our 3D world or best create alternative renderings of monuments and landscapes. A study area has been chosen to present such a methodology. Ancient Pylos was selected as the study area due to the abundance of bibliographic references available, facilitating the creation of a cartographic representation of the region based on archaeological discoveries and historical sources. The advantages of employing 3D geo-visualizations in archaeology are numerous and are examined within this article. Visual imaging aids archaeologists in elucidating intricate or deficient details pertaining to a monument, simultaneously streamlining archaeological data for easier comprehension by the general public. The use of 3D geo-visualization to represent data and other non-photorealistic details is expected to dominate in the near future.
