Abstract

This research discusses hermeneutics, a discipline concerned with approaches to understanding complex texts, particularly those of the ḥadīth and the Qur’ān. In the context of this study, hermeneutics is employed as a theoretical framework to explore the interpretation of ḥadīth using both textual and contextual approaches, which are essential foundational concepts. The textual approach focuses on direct analysis of the ḥadīth text itself, while the contextual approach emphasizes the importance of understanding the social, cultural, and historical contexts that inform and influence the meaning of the ḥadīth. The methodology used in this research is qualitative, employing a literature review as the primary method, supported by analytical interpretation and reconstruction of related texts. In examining the Qudsī ḥadīth concerning Allah al-Raḥmān found in al-Aḥādīth al-Qudsiyyah by Shaykh Muḥammad Mutawallī al-Shaʿrāwī, this study applies a hermeneutical method, particularly the approach of tafsīr bi al-raʾy (interpretation based on reasoned opinion). This method is considered effective in uncovering and explaining the inner dimensions and spiritual meanings of the ḥadīth. The literature-based investigation revealed several parallels between this hermeneutical approach and interpretive methods employed in other scientific disciplines, indicating the interdisciplinary potential of hermeneutics in ḥadīth studies. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of hermeneutics as applied to the interpretation of ḥadīth requires not only a close and detailed textual analysis but also a deep engagement with the socio-cultural and historical frameworks that shaped the emergence and reception of these traditions.

Abstract

This study investigates the concept of ri’ayah in Prophetic traditions on leadership and its applicability to the leadership practices of school principals within the education sector. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and thematic analysis of selected traditions, the research identifies five key components of ri’ayah: managerial responsibility, collaboration, adaptability, religiosity, and justice. The findings demonstrate that incorporating these principles significantly enhances the effectiveness of school leadership, particularly in optimizing resource management, cultivating an inclusive and harmonious learning environment, and advancing the development of students and educators. Moreover, the study underscores the intersection between ri’ayah and servant leadership, which prioritizes service-oriented values, compassion, and integrity as pivotal to achieving educational excellence. By bridging Islamic teachings and contemporary leadership theories, this article contributes to academic discourse while offering practical insights for school principals to foster high-quality, competitive, and ethically grounded educational environments.

Abstract

This paper intends to shed light on a crucial stage in hadith research, between the sanad and the matan, which took place in the mid-19th century CE, when the figure of Salah al-Din Idlibi offered a new formula of matan criticism, and was considered strange and unnecessary, especially when it was presented by a lesser-known person, who could perhaps be compared to the big names, with the findings of the sanad research method. Ignaz Goldziher for example (1850-1921), who inspired many orientalists, like Jonathan A. C Brown. Writing using the qualitative-narrative-inductive writing method, with a socio-historical approach, finds that, criticism of matn becomes an anti-climax of procedural hadith research with scientific bids or hadith scientific methodology, which makes hadith a multilateral function in reading contemporary issues that covered by advances in technology and science. It was found that the sanad as a narrator ending with the editor of the hadith text/matn, must consciously ensure that the utterance was transmitted from the Prophet, with the correct events, according to the rules of the language, according to the social situation when each narrator in the Isnād chain intersects without disconnected based on the historical elements of each sanad.

Abstract

In contemporary times, conflicts frequently arise from differing interpretations of sacred texts, particularly the ḥadīth. Within the discipline of ḥadīth studies, the most contentious and vulnerable area lies in the dimension of understanding (fahm). This is unsurprising, given that ḥadīth—although rooted in divine revelation—are transmitted through human narrators, which opens interpretative space. One of the frequently debated traditions is the Prophet’s command to adhere to the Ahl al-Bayt. This study seeks to critically examine both the authenticity and the interpretation of the ḥadīth that mentions the Prophet's two legacies (al-thaqalayn), namely the Qur’ān and the Ahl al-Bayt, particularly the narration transmitted by Zayd ibn Arqam. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research applies the methods of takhrīj al-ḥadīth, naqd al-sanad, naqd al-matn, and fiqh al-ḥadīth, supported by relevant classical and contemporary literature and peer-reviewed journal articles. The findings indicate that the narration of Zayd ibn Arqam is ṣaḥīḥ in terms of both its chain of transmission (sanad) and its content (matn). However, the understanding held by the salaf al-ṣāliḥ implies that the instruction to follow the Ahl al-Bayt is primarily intended to ensure the protection of their rights, while ultimate guidance remains the exclusive role of the Qur’ān. Therefore, in a contemporary context, it would be inaccurate to assert that the Ahl al-Bayt are equivalent to the Qur’ān as dual sources of authoritative guidance or inheritance of the Prophet.

Abstract

Conflict often emerges when friendships in a diverse society like Indonesia are founded upon differing ideological foundations. These tensions are typically rooted in variations in belief systems and interpersonal interactions among individuals or groups. Such discord can disrupt social harmony, particularly within familial contexts, and can subsequently impact political, economic, and societal stability. This article seeks to describe, illustrate, and analyze the practices and procedures employed in resolving enduring conflicts between Muslims and Christians in Makassar City. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in phenomenology and lived experience, the researcher conducted direct observations and in-depth interviews. These methods were further supported by an exploration of hadiths pertaining to interfaith harmony. The findings indicate that Muslims and Christians in the Sermani area maintain strong and positive relationships, which extend beyond routine interactions into collaborative social activities, including mutual aid and conflict resolution. The study emphasizes that Islamic teachings, particularly those conveyed through hadith, encourage Muslims to cultivate good relations with all people, including Christians. To mitigate negative perceptions of religion, it is recommended that the government increase support for Islamic education, with a particular focus on peacebuilding and addressing issues of religious persecution.

Abstract

This study aims to highlight the significance of social life from the perspective of the Qur'an and Sunnah by focusing on the practical examples set by the Ulū al-ʿAzm messengers. Their stories were chosen due to the profound lessons and noble values they offer, which remain relevant to the social life of humanity. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical method with a thematic approach to selected Qur'anic verses and Prophetic traditions, supported by classical tafsir works, hadith commentaries, and Islamic educational literature. One of the central findings is that the Qur'an and Sunnah emphasize the importance of adhering to the community (jamaʿah), which yields significant benefits such as protection from misguidance, safeguarding of the heart, the descent of divine mercy, and the realization of shari'ah objectives within society. The study also concludes that the Ulū al-ʿAzm messengers occupy an exceptional status and possess great virtues, as they are leaders of the faith, chosen ones among nations, exemplary role models, and intercessors for humanity on the Day of Judgment.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of hadiths about demonstrations on social media, particularly TikTok, which has become a new platform for the dissemination of religious discourse. Hadiths about demonstrations are generally understood as admonitions emphasizing obedience to those in authority and prohibiting rebellion, and are therefore often used to oppose demonstrations. However, on TikTok, these hadiths are presented in short videos with persuasive text, narrative, and visuals without contextual explanation, potentially leading to a narrowing of their meaning. The purpose of this study is to describe the form of hadith messages about demonstrations displayed in TikTok content and to analyze netizens' responses to them. The method used is qualitative content analysis, utilizing primary data in the form of TikTok videos about hadiths about demonstrations and secondary data from hadith literature and previous research. The results show that the representation of hadiths on social media is not only normative but can also be used as political legitimacy that influences public understanding.

Abstract

This article discusses Islamic legal methodology as a framework for understanding and applying law derived from revelation, Sunnah, and the Prophetic approval (Taqrīr) in an integrated manner. Revelation provides fundamental principles and moral guidance, while the Sunnah details practical aspects of general provisions, and the Prophetic approval affirms social practices consistent with Sharia. The integration of these three sources enables Islamic law to be applied consistently, flexibly, and in a manner relevant to the evolving life of Muslim communities. A comprehensive understanding of revelation, Sunnah, and Prophetic approval ensures legal consistency and legitimacy, while also providing guidance for the performance of worship and social interactions. This approach emphasizes that Islamic law is not only normative but also practical, adaptive, and contextual. Consequently, an integrative Islamic legal methodology serves as a foundation for bridging normative principles with real-world practice, ensuring that the law remains relevant while guiding the moral, social, and spiritual life of the community across time.

Abstract

This article examines the prohibition of striking the face from the perspective of ḥadīth using the ma‘ānī al-ḥadīth approach and its relevance to Mandar culture. The objectives of this study are to examine the authenticity of the ḥadīth concerning the prohibition of striking the face, analyze its semantic meanings, and explain its relevance to Mandar cultural values. This research employs a qualitative method based on library research. The analytical framework applies the ma‘ānī al-ḥadīth approach through three interpretive methods: textual, intertextual, and contextual interpretation, integrated with a cultural studies approach. In addition, ḥadīth takhrīj methods are employed to trace and assess the authenticity of the ḥadīth under study. The findings indicate that the ḥadīth transmitted through the sanad of Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal is classified as ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi, as it fulfills all criteria of authenticity. Textually and intertextually, the ḥadīth demonstrates a firm prohibition against all forms of violence, while contextually it encompasses both physical and verbal violence. This prohibition is consistent with Mandar cultural values that uphold siri’, emphasizing the protection of human dignity and honor.

Abstract

This study investigates how linguistic analysis influences Islamic legal construction in determining the beginning of Hijri months, particularly when the crescent is not visible. It focuses on three variant hadith formulations, fa in gumma, fi in gummiya, and fa in gubbiya; imperative word ṣūmū and afṭirū based on ru’yah; and the paired imperatives faqdurū lah and fa akmilū. The research employs a qualitative design using semantic and pragmatic analysis, supported by lexical, morpho-syntactic examination and Uṣūl al-Fiqh reasoning. Primary data are drawn from authoritative hadith compilations, while supporting evidence is taken from classical Arabic lexica and contemporary astronomical discussions. The findings show that ru’yah is polysemous and cannot be restricted to sensory sight alone; it also denotes epistemic certainty. The wording gumma/gummiya indicates external obscuration and corresponds to faqdurū, which semantically implies precise measurement, thus providing linguistic support for astronomical calculation (ḥisāb). In contrast, gubbiya reflects informational limitation and reinforces istikmāl as an operational legal mechanism. This study argues that hisab and istikmāl are not mutually exclusive but complementary, and they may be operationalized through imkān al-ru’yah computation with tolerance for local, regional, or global maṭla’. These results offer a linguistic basis for integrating fiqh and astronomy in authoritative lunar-month determination.
