Abstract

This community service program was conducted by lecturers and students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Gorontalo State University, under the theme “Enhancing the Capacity of Agricultural Extension Workers and Farmers through the Digitalization of Extension Materials in Ulanta Village, Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency.” The program was motivated by the low level of digital literacy among extension workers and farmers, as well as the absence of a structured and sustainable system for documenting and distributing agricultural extension materials in digital form. The main objective was to improve the participants’ ability to utilize digital technology as an effective, interactive, and accessible medium for agricultural extension. The activity employed a participatory and learning-by-doing approach, consisting of several stages: needs assessment, technical training on the use of Canva and CapCut applications, practical sessions for producing digital content, and the establishment of a WhatsApp Group as a community-based extension platform. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ digital competencies, where the farmers’ average post-test score rose from 13.35% to 76.24%, and the extension workers’ score increased from 22.4% to 95.9%. Participants successfully produced two types of digital extension materials (a short video and an infographic) and actively used the WhatsApp Group to share agricultural information. The program also resulted in a transformation of the extension workers’ role—from conventional information providers to digital facilitators—and fostered greater independence among farmers in accessing and producing agricultural information. In conclusion, the program effectively enhanced the digital literacy and technical skills of extension workers and farmers, strengthened information exchange through digital communication platforms, and demonstrated the potential for developing a sustainable model of digital agricultural extension at the village level.

Abstract

Fishermen in Lhok Keluang, Jaya District, Aceh Jaya Regency, still predominantly use bottom gillnets, which are non-selective fishing gears that often capture non-target species such as hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) and bottlenose wedgefish (Rhynchobatus australiae), both categorized as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This condition creates ecological and economic problems since bycatch species have low market value and threaten the sustainability of marine ecosystems. To address these issues, a community service program was conducted in the form of training and assistance on the use of environmentally friendly fish traps (bubu) as a more selective and sustainable fishing alternative. The activity aimed to enhance fishermen’s skills in constructing and operating fish traps, reduce shark and ray bycatch, and increase catches of economically valuable target species. The program was implemented in August 2025 under the coordination of Panglima Laot Lhok Keluang, involving ten fishermen, three lecturers, and two students from Universitas Syiah Kuala. The methods included focus group discussions (FGDs), socialization, training on trap construction, field implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of catches. The results showed improved fishermen’s understanding and skills in using fish traps, a decrease in bycatch, and an increase in the productivity of reef and demersal fish. Fishermen expressed their willingness to adopt this fishing method sustainably, as it is more environmentally friendly and economically beneficial. Therefore, this program successfully supported the conservation of endangered marine species, improved fishermen’s welfare, and promoted sustainable fisheries practices in the coastal area of Aceh Jaya.

Abstract

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia remains a common health problem experienced by adolescent girls and can impact learning concentration and productivity. Efforts to improve nutritional literacy are one of the important strategies in preventing anemia in adolescents. This community service activity aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of adolescent girls in anemia prevention through the GEMARI Program (Gerakan Mencegah Anemia Remaja Putri/Movement to Prevent Anemia in Adolescent Girls), which was developed from previous research findings. The activity was carried out at SMP Negeri 1 Campalagian, targeting 24 adolescent girls. The activity methods included nutrition education on anemia prevention, an interactive question-and-answer session, and training on making fish-based snacks as a source of animal protein and iron. Furthermore, training on the use of health measurement tools (hemoglobin meters, scales, and height measuring devices) was also provided to the school health unit (UKS) teachers.Knowledge evaluation was conducted using pretest and posttest. The results showed an increase in participants' knowledge after the education, where the "poor knowledge" category decreased from 54.17% to 25.00%, while the "sufficient knowledge" category increased from 20.83% to 54.17%. These findings indicate that practical-based nutrition education utilizing local food is capable of improving adolescent girls' nutritional literacy in their efforts to prevent anemia. This activity is expected to serve as a model for sustainable school-based intervention to support adolescent health programs and the strengthening of the School Health Unit (UKS).

Abstract

The Anyelir Women's Farmers Group (KWT) is a women's farmer group active in vegetable cultivation in Hajimena Village, Natar District. This area is classified as lowland and has ultisol soil. This is a challenge for the KWT in cultivating in the existing geographical conditions. Ultisol soil is classified as soil with a low pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and low organic matter content, resulting in inefficient fertilizer application. This affects the optimization of vegetable commodity production, especially chilies. Other problems with chilies besides ultisol soil are whitefly attacks and curly leaf disease. This requires integrated and sustainable control of plant pests. The Treat Method is a combination of technical and biological cultural control in chili cultivation. The purpose of this activity is to transfer technology regarding proper chili cultivation with sustainable control of plant pests for optimal results. The methods used are education, skill development, and process evaluation. The results of this activity indicate an increase in knowledge and skills among KWT members. Whitefly and curly leaf disease attacks can be suppressed by up to 2.5% and 20%, respectively.

Abstract

The increasing volume of household waste in the Hajimena Police Complex, South Lampung, Indonesia, which exceeds local processing capacity, has led to waste accumulation at final disposal sites (TPA) and poses a serious environmental challenge. This situation necessitates sustainable management efforts to prevent negative impacts on public health. An environmentally friendly approach that transforms waste into economically valuable products offers a promising solution. This community service program aimed to process household organic waste into liquid fertilizer using a simple solid-liquid (SL) technique that can be easily applied by residents. Organic waste such as food scraps, vegetables, and fruits was collected from households and processed using the SL method. The program also included socialization and hands-on training to enable residents to independently produce liquid fertilizer. The activity successfully improved community awareness and skills in managing organic waste. A total of 30 participants joined the training, which combined theoretical and practical sessions. Evaluation results showed a significant improvement in participants’ understanding, with average scores increasing from 56.8% (pre-test) to 85.5% (post-test). Participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm to apply the technique independently. In conclusion, this community service program effectively enhanced the community’s knowledge and awareness of sustainable organic waste management in the Hajimena Police Complex.

Abstract

The development of the digital era demands data literacy skills as a basic 21st-century skill that is important for junior high school students. Based on observations at SMPK Satya Wacana Salatiga, most students still experience difficulties in understanding, interpreting, and using data in learning. This community service activity aims to improve students' data literacy through hands-on practice-based training with an interactive and contextual learning approach. The implementation method includes socialization, data concept training, data processing simulations using spreadsheets and R software, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed a significant increase in data analysis skills. The average pre-test score of 3.11 increased to 3.84 in the post-test, with an average normalized gain (K) of 0.40, which is included in the medium category. The paired t-test produced a value of t = -12.49 and p-value = 0.000 (p-value < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the results before and after the training. A total of 44 students were in the medium improvement category, 38 students were low, and 19 students were high. These findings indicate that R-based data literacy training is effective in improving junior high school students' conceptual understanding, self-confidence, and analytical skills, and is relevant to be developed as a 21st-century learning model.
