Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' understanding of the concept of interval in the Real Analysis course, particularly in understanding the properties of intervals, such as supremum, infimum, and nested intervals. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study. Data were collected through proof-based essay tests, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation during the learning process using GeoGebra 3D AR. The sample consisted of 35 fourth semester students from the Mathematics Education program enrolled in the Real Analysis course. Data analysis was carried out with a thematic approach based on the APOS theory (Action, Process, Object, Schema). The results showed that most students struggled to transfer the visual understanding obtained through GeoGebra 3D AR into formal proofs. While 68.6% of students showed an improvement in visual understanding, only 8.5% could formally prove the property of nested interval intersections. The implications of this study highlight the importance of integrating interactive technology with deeper proof exercises, as well as the application of problem-based approaches to enhance understanding of the interval concept. The limitations of this study include the small sample size and the focus on one type of learning technology. Future research is recommended to explore the use of other technologies and more varied teaching methods.

Abstract

Abstract Mathematical representation is the ability to express ideas or concepts in visual form (diagrams, graphs, pictures, tables). The cognitive style of students is also related to their mathematical representation, because the cognitive structure of students in remembering problems or processing information obtained during learning will vary. This study is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to describe students' mathematical representation abilities in solving mathematical problems of Field Dependent and Field Independent students. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 11 Mataram. The results of this study show significant differences related to mathematical representation abilities in solving linear equation problems between students with FD and FI cognitive styles. FD students cannot solve problems if given problems that are different from the examples taught by the teacher and depend on guidance or direction from the teacher. While FI students can solve problems even though they are different from the examples taught by the teacher because they can use their own thinking without being guided by the method taught by the teacher and do not depend on teacher guidance. Then students with FI cognitive styles are more analytical in solving problems than students with FD cognitive styles. The instruments used in this study were GEFT test sheets, mathematical representation test questions, and validated interview guidelines.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of prospective mathematics teachers regarding proof-based learning from four aspects: conceptual understanding, the relevance of proofs in teaching, the challenges faced, and confidence in teaching proofs. Data were collected using a questionnaire completed by 65 students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at Unsulbar who took the Modern Algebra course in the 2024/2025 academic year. The results show that the majority of students recognize the importance of proofs for deepening mathematical understanding and as a reasoning tool. They also view proofs as relevant material for teaching in secondary schools. However, students reported difficulties in understanding the language and steps of proofs, as well as limitations in guidance. Additionally, the students' confidence level in teaching proofs was moderate, with many feeling pedagogically unprepared. These findings indicate the need for structured proof materials, intensive guidance, and specialized pedagogical training to enhance students’ abilities and confidence in teaching proofs. The implementation of hands-on practical experiences in secondary schools is also strongly recommended to support the readiness of prospective teachers.

Abstract

Connective thinking is the process of building ideas to solve problems. This happens by connecting concepts and generalizing them to more complex mathematical problems. Connective thinking is also a stage of forming a thinking scheme that links mathematical ideas when building mathematical connections. This study aims to describe students' connective thinking abilities in building mathematical connections in solving contextual problems with a maritime theme. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with three student subjects selected based on different levels of ability. The main instrument is three contextual questions with the theme of ship navigation, which are analyzed through four indicators of connective thinking: cognition, formulation, inference, and reconstruction. The results indicate that high-ability students are able to go through all stages of connective thinking thoroughly and logically. Medium-ability students show an incomplete thinking process, while low-ability students experience difficulties at almost all stages. This study emphasizes the importance of contextual problems that integrates conceptual understanding and reflection to develop students' connective thinking abilities.

Abstract

This study formulates a nonparametric regression model for multiresponse data by combining three estimators: truncated spline, Fourier series, and kernel function. Each estimator captures specific characteristics. Truncated spline capture local traits with knot points, while fourier series capture periodic patterns and kernel estimators provide flexible smoothing for unknown functional forms. The model proposed is under an additive assumption where each predictor contributes independently to each response. Estimation is done with Weighted Least Squares (WLS) method which is efficient in managing the correlations between the multiresponse variables. The final multiresponse nonparametric regression curve estimator combining truncated spline, Fourier series, and kernel is given by \\hat{\mu} = \hat{f} + \hat{g} + \hat{h}\] obtained by solving the WLS optimization problem: [\min_{\boldsymbol{\beta}, \boldsymbol{\alpha}} \{ \boldsymbol{\varepsilon}' W \boldsymbol{\varepsilon} \} =\min_{\boldsymbol{\beta}, \boldsymbol{\alpha}} \left\{ (\mathbf{y}^* - U \boldsymbol{\beta} - Z \boldsymbol{\alpha})' W (\mathbf{y}^* - U \boldsymbol{\beta} - Z \boldsymbol{\alpha}) \right\}.\]. The solution to this problem results in the mixed estimator, which can be expressed as: \[\hat{\boldsymbol{\mu}} = E \mathbf{y} \quad \text{with} \quad E = UB + ZA + T.\]

Abstract

This development research aims to produce a valid, practical, and effective E-Worksheet based on the discovery-inquiry learning model to enhance students’ mathematical representation ability. The urgency of this study is grounded in the low level of students’ mathematical representation ability and the limited availability of interactive learning media that can connect abstract concepts with real-world contexts. The use of a discovery-inquiry-based E-LKPD offers a potential solution by encouraging students’ active engagement in constructing understanding through exploration and concept discovery. The subjects of this research were seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung during the 2024/2025 academic year. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model. Data were collected through mathematical representation ability tests and analyzed using a t-test and N-Gain score. The developed E-LKPD was categorized as valid and practical. The effectiveness test showed that the E-LKPD significantly improved students’ mathematical representation ability, with an average N-Gain score of 0,561. Hypothesis testing t-test confirmed that the use of the discovery-inquiry-based E-LKPD is effective in enhancing students’ mathematical representation ability.
