Abstract

Academic stress is a common psychological condition experienced by university students when academic demands are perceived as exceeding their personal capabilities. Engineering students are particularly vulnerable to academic stress due to intensive coursework, project-based assignments, laboratory activities, and high academic performance expectations. This study aimed to describe academic stress among engineering students based on demographic characteristics, including gender, age, semester level, and organizational involvement. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach using a convenience sampling technique. The participants consisted of 150 engineering students from various universities in Indonesia. Data were collected using the Perceived Academic Stress Scale (PASS) developed by Bedewy and Gabriel, which demonstrated good reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.834. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, and non-parametric difference tests, namely Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis. The results indicated that the overall level of academic stress among engineering students ranged from moderate to high, as shown by an empirical mean score higher than the hypothetical mean. The findings revealed no significant differences in academic stress based on gender and age. However, significant differences were found based on semester level in certain dimensions of academic stress, particularly workload and examinations, as well as academic self-perception. These results suggest that increasing academic demands across semesters contribute to higher academic stress among engineering students. Therefore, universities are encouraged to provide adequate academic and psychological support to help engineering students manage academic stress more effectively.

Abstract

Sleep is one of the needs that must be fulfilled every day for the body to recover and carry out activities with sufficient energy. One aspect of good sleep is adequate sleep duration. However, survey results show 56.3% of students sleep 4-6 hours, with social media use being common activity before bedtime. Bedtime procrastination is intentional postponement of sleep without clear external reason, despite awareness of negative consequences. Bedtime procrastination affects and has an impact on health. Future time perspective serves as a deteerminant of individual behavior, helping them to consider long-term consequences The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between future time perspective and bedtime procrastination among college students. The study was conducted on individuals who met the criteria of being college students, aged 18-25 years, and had delayed sleep in the past month. This study used a quantitative method with a correlational approach and purposive sampling technique to determine the number of participants, which was 120 participants. The measurement tools used in this study were the Future dimension of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory by Zimbardo and Boyd (1999), adapted by Jonathan (2019), and the Bedtime Procrastination Scale by Kroese et al. (2014), adapted by Christianto and Rostiana (2024). The results of the study showed a negative relationship between future time perspective and bedtime procrastination (r = -0.460). Individuals who do not consider future consequences tend to bedtime procrastination.

Abstract

University student, particularly those working on their final projects, often navigate a range of academic demands that can trigger stress, anxiety, and even procrastination, making self-regulation a crucial skill for managing the thesis-writing process in a steady and effective manner. In this context, grit—defined as long-term perseverance toward meaningful goals—plays an important role in sustaining effort, remaining committed, and staying resilient when students encounter academic or emotional obstacles. These two constructs are assumed to be related, as students with higher levels of grit are generally better at managing their behaviors, emotions, and thoughts while completing their thesis. To examine this assumption, the present study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 215 final-year students aged 19–25. The instruments used were the Short Grit Scale developed by Duckworth et al. (2007) and the Self-Regulation Questionnaire designed by Brown, Miller, and Lawendowski in Carey et al. (2004). Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation due to the non-normal distribution of the variables. The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between grit and self-regulation (r = 0.552, p < 0.000), indicating that students with higher grit tend to show stronger self-regulatory abilities throughout the thesis process. These findings highlight that both grit and self-regulation are essential components supporting academic persistence and the successful completion of final-year academic tasks.
