Abstract

This article explores the transformative role of Christian hospitality in addressing religious violence, strengthening interreligious tolerance, and deepening dialogical engagement in plural societies. Using a qualitative and literature-based approach, the study draws upon biblical exegesis and contemporary philosophical thought, particularly from Derrida, Levinas, and Zizioulas, to frame hospitality not merely as a moral virtue but as a radical theological praxis. The findings show that hospitality, in its unconditional form, dismantles the boundaries that sustain violence by welcoming the stranger as a sacred presence, including those once perceived as enemies. Unlike passive tolerance which often reinforces hierarchical relations, hospitality fosters active encounters rooted in mutual respect and shared humanity. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that dialog grounded in hospitality surpasses pluralistic formalism by offering a genuine relational space where differences are neither denied nor diluted, but embraced as sources of mutual growth. This dialogical hospitality challenges the binary between particularism and relativism, positioning openness to the other as a sacred imperative of faith. The study concludes that Christian hospitality holds profound potential as an interreligious ethical framework that transcends theological abstraction and responds concretely to the social fractures of post-secular societies. As such, this research contributes to the broader discourse on interfaith ethics, offering a nuanced paradigm for theological engagement, conflict resolution, and civic reconciliation across religious and cultural boundaries.

Abstract

The reality of modernity, which has given rise to various complexities that are sometimes detrimental to humanity, has revived local religions which indeed have their own cosmology, which is seen as saving the world. The main focus of the research is cosmology within the teachings of Agama Sunda Djawa, exploring sources of ethics, views on the afterlife, and environmental ethics. The Seren Taun ceremony, as part of local cultural wisdom, becomes the center of attention in understanding the meaning of rituals and the symbolic significance of the Paseban building. This research utilizes a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving informants such as followers of Madraism, Agama Djawa Sunda (ADS; the Sundanese Javanese Religion), Paguyuban Adat Cara Karuhun Urang, and Adat Karuhun Urang. The results provide a deep understanding of the administrative and discriminatory challenges faced by Sunda Wiwitan followers and their efforts to maintain their existence and beliefs. This research also reveals the relationship between traditional arts, especially Gemyung art, with the expression of Sundanese cosmology. Overall, this research contributes to the understanding of religion and spirituality in Indonesia while also highlighting social, political, and administrative issues faced by certain religious groups.

Abstract

This article examines the patterns of teacher participation in supporting religious moderation programs at the madrasah level. The participation process itself is inseparable from the position of teachers as the center of students' activities in imparting and receiving knowledge and information about religious moderation. The study, conducted in two madrasahs with different religious orientations in Bandung and Garut regencies, employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, documentation study, and case study. The research findings indicate the existence of a participation activity model characterized by organizers, participants, and supporters of religious moderation activities based on Islamic teachings principles. Other madrasahs should exemplify this to strengthen the character, attitudes, and openness of students in facing the pluralistic religious developments in society.

Abstract

This research aims to comprehend the concept of moderation in Islamic preaching and Christian missions. The research has three objectives: firstly, to uncover the practice of moderation in Islamic preaching; secondly, to elucidate the manifestation of moderation in Christian missions; and thirdly, to analyze the similarities and differences between moderation in Islamic preaching and Christian missions. Employing a qualitative text-based research method with a literature review approach, the study is conducted on social media platforms by searching for articles from relevant journals. The data sources consist of secondary data collected from literature obtained from journals related to the research problem. Data collection involves searching for journals browsed on portals such as Garuda, Moraref, DOAJ, Google Scholar, and the National Library. Data analysis encompasses data reduction, data classification, data presentation, and data interpretation. The results reveal that the concept of moderation in Islamic preaching facilitates the peaceful and tolerant delivery of preaching invitations with openness to all religious differences. Essentially, moderation in Christian missions aims to prevent extreme, radical, and excessive attitudes in practicing Christian teachings. Additionally, it embraces all religious diversity within Christianity. This research concludes that moderation in Islamic preaching promotes balanced preaching delivery, fostering mutual respect among Muslims. Meanwhile, moderation in Christian missions requires an open-minded approach that embraces all religious differences within Christianity.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the views of civil law and the Code of Canon Law regarding interfaith marriages, as well as their impact on individuals and society, especially in the Indonesian context. The method used is a comparative study, which allows an in-depth understanding of interfaith marriages. Interfaith marriage is a complex phenomenon with various legal implications, especially in the context of civil law and the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church. The background to this problem includes the growing differences in religious beliefs and practices in society, which has resulted in lawsuits regarding interfaith marriages. The results of the study reveal differences in civil law approaches, which tend to be secular and focus on legal aspects, while the Catholic Church's Code of Canon Law emphasizes spiritual and theological components. In the context of interfaith marriages, individuals entering into interfaith marriages face challenges in integrating two different beliefs. The conclusions of this study speak to the need for interfaith dialogue and collaboration between civil and church authorities to develop a more inclusive approach to interfaith marriage. Implementing policies that pay attention to legal and spiritual aspects can create a framework that supports diversity and social cohesion in an increasingly pluralistic society.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and find the differences and similarities between the texts of the Qur'an and the Bible. One of them is the comparison of the Qur'an and the Bible about the creation of the universe. The method used is library research by using the intertextuality theory approach initiated by Julia Krsiteva to compare the Qur'an and the Bible. The results of this study show three principles of similarities and differences in the intertextuality of al-Qur'an and al-Kitab. First, the principle of haplology in Surah Al-Fussilat verse 11 explains the creation of the heavens and the earth, which is simpler than the explanation in the Bible. Second, the excerpt principle found in Surah Al-Anbiya:30 with the Bible 1:6 explains the beginning of the universe as a solid unity, then separated as it is today, namely the existence of the heavens and the earth. Third, the parallel principle regarding the similarity between texts in terms of themes and thoughts, such as in Surah Al-Baqarah:117 and the Bible 1:1-2. Both discuss and emphasize the theological side of understanding the verse of the creation of the universe. The fundamental difference lies in the details of the phases of the creation of the universe and the detailed order in which the creation of the universe took place.

Abstract

This research discusses the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in promoting peace in the digital era. In its background, digitization has fundamentally altered the paradigm of human communication and interaction. This study aims to analyze NU's practices in promoting peace and tolerance in the digital world and to identify the challenges and opportunities faced by NU in this regard. The research method used is a qualitative approach with online observation and content analysis of materials produced and disseminated by NU on social media and other digital platforms. The results show that NU actively advocates messages of peace and tolerance through direct activities and inclusive digital content production. NU also engages in interfaith dialogue and cross-religious cooperation in the digital world. Despite receiving positive responses from the public, NU also faces challenges and controversies, such as the emergence of misleading content on social media, the presence of controversial figures affiliated with NU, and the disagreement over the term “Islam Nusantara.” This research argues that NU plays a crucial role in introducing peace through the virtual world, with significant contributions to understanding the role of religion in the digital era and developing more effective strategies in leveraging digital technology for peace purposes.

Abstract

The purpose of this writing is to explore the school of exegesis and the comparative interpretation of leadership verses in Al-Munir Fi Al-Aqidah Wa Al-Syari’ah Wa Al-Manhaj and Tafsir Al-Mizan Fi Tafsir Al-Qur’an. The research method employed in this writing is qualitative and analytical-descriptive. The initial step in this research is to trace the Quranic verses related to leadership in both exegeses. Then, a comparison is made between their interpretations, and the differences in their exegesis schools are analyzed. It was found in this study that the exegesis school of Al-Munir Fi Al-Aqidah Wa Al-Syari’ah Wa Al-Manhaj tends towards the Sunnah interpretation, using the tahlili method, employing a combined approach of exegesis between bi al-ma’tsur and bi ar-ra’y which has a literary, social, and fiqh-oriented interpretation style. Meanwhile, Tafsir Al-Mizan Fi Tafsir Al-Qur’an represents the Shia interpretation, utilizing the tahlili method and heavily relying on its sources, which have a theological or philosophical orientation. In interpreting leadership verses in both exegeses, the author found one such verse in Surah An-Nisa [4]: 58-59, which is one of the Sunnah leadership verses regarding trustworthiness in leadership, and in Surah Al-Maidah [5]: 67, which is one of the well-known Shia leadership verses concerning propagation.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the influence of community participation on the creation of local legal products in Indonesia, focusing on regions with special autonomy status like Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Surakarta City, and comparing them with regions with ordinary autonomy status like Bandung Regency and Bandung City. Using a combined normative and empirical legal research approach, including public consultations and field surveys, the study delves into the origin of regional legal products, highlighting community participation, people's sovereignty, the rule of law, and public policy. It examines various factors affecting community involvement, such as social, political, cultural, and educational factors. The research findings underscore the importance of community participation in shaping the quality and compliance of local legal products. However, conventional patterns in facilitating community involvement often result in suboptimal participation, except for unique cases like Aceh, which demonstrates innovative approaches and impactful outcomes. The study concludes that enhancing community participation is crucial for improving the quality and effectiveness of local legal products, ensuring better compliance and implementation at the grassroots level.

Abstract

Pancasila is the ideological guideline of the Indonesian state. As a philosophical foundation, Pancasila is a guideline for civic behavior. Religious pluralism is a challenge that must be answered by Pancasila which is practiced in the lives of Indonesian society. As part of society who must participate in the development of state ideology, students are an important part in the practice of Pancasila. By taking samples from Theology students, this study compares how Pancasila is perceived both from a cognitive and practical perspective by Catholic students at Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) and Islamic students at Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University (UIN). Both universities are in Bandung, which is a big city inhabited by followers of various religions. The study was carried out using a qualitative and descriptive approach to the students by observation, interviews and documentation studies from the two groups of theology students. The analysis is carried out using an interactive model, which consists of data interpretation, data classification, inference and data presentation activities. The advantage of this model is that it can be taken back from the field if something is still not perfect. The theoretical analysis is based on the theory of political participation and the theory of ideological perception and practice. The research results show that Indonesia's basic philosophical framework, developed differently among Islamic and Catholic students, shows the intersection between religious beliefs and national ideology. Islamic students often explore the complex relationship between Islamic principles and the secular nature of Pancasila. Although divinity is in line with Islamic monotheism, interpretations of the ideals of democracy and social justice within the Pancasila framework can vary. Some Islamic students participate actively in societal processes, contributing to democratic values, but there are differing discussions regarding the compatibility of certain Pancasila principles with Islamic teachings. On the other hand, Catholic students approach implementing Pancasila by emphasizing ethical and moral values that are in accordance with the teachings of their religion. Social justice, which is a core principle of Pancasila, is in line with Catholic doctrine, thereby encouraging Catholic students to get involved in initiatives that address social inequality. Both Islamic and Catholic students contribute to the implementation of Pancasila in their unique ways. However, they show that the principles of Pancasila can become a common foundation for religious communities in Indonesia. The variety of ways these students navigate its application reflects Pancasila's ability to accommodate diverse religious perspectives and contribute to Indonesia's collective identity. The political participation of students of different religions can have a significant impact on the development of the state ideology of Pancasila. Students feel it is important to understand and uphold the Pancasila ideology to become politically mature citizens and contribute to building a democratic political system. Efforts to curb the politicization of religion and encourage interfaith dialogue are very important to uphold the Pancasila ideology in Indonesia.
