Abstract

Education stands as a nation's paramount legacy, particularly to its young populace, shaping the course of a society's advancement. The quality of education a nation provides significantly dictates its progress. This study is conducted to explore the diverse factors influencing academic performance among students at Punjab University. A sample of 276 students was drawn utilizing Yamane’s formula through random sampling and data collection employed questionnaires. CGPA is used as the measure of academic performance of students. Data Analysis is done using SPSS. Results are portrayed descriptively using frequencies, percentages, and visual aids, while inferential statistics included Pearson’s Chi-Square unveil associations, Factor Analysis to extract academic factor, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall-Wallis H tests to explore the opinions of students for different variables. Interestingly, no direct link emerged between respondents' CGPA and gender, but a notable correlation emerged between CGPA and their mothers' educational background. Via Conformity Factor Analysis four key factors surfaced: attitudes toward study, ability of time management, learning facilities and teachers’ professionalism. Mann-Whitney U test divulged differing opinions between male and female respondents concerning time management abilities and their attitudes toward studying. Additionally, Kruskall-Wallis H test highlighted varying perspectives among students of different CGPA levels regarding attitudes toward studying and teachers’ professionalism. Finding suggests that administration should not only focus on teacher trainings but also improve learning facilities.

Abstract

This qualitative study attempts to find out students’ perceptions on the utilization of icebreakers in grammar class. It broadly believes that better teaching and learning provide a likely classroom climate. EFL teachers employ plenty of strategies and activities to actualize successful language acquisition. Reliable icebreaker activities are one of the techniques that support EFL learners to gain a well-turned learning outcome, especially in Grammar. To take the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling, which Involved 12 students from the 3rd semester of English Department at the State Islamic Institute of Lhokseumawe. A questionnaire with Likert-scale solely shed light on the description of EFL learners’ perceptions of the use of icebreakers in grammar class. Moreover, the data analysis was done through some steps, namely, data collection, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. Several bar charts were presented to illustrate the data. The result indicated that icebreakers became substantial activities in grammar class to organize not only linguistic and social factors but also psychological factors in language learning, such as boredom, anxiety, nervousness, and insecurity. Various kinds of applicable ice breakers implemented in grammar class stimulate students’ interest, foster their motivation and enthusiasm, and develop interpersonal skills. Thus, EFL Learners are ready to undergo the forthcoming lesson on grammar and have a positive learning experience. So, understanding of the subject matter improves.  Finally, this study can be a powerful teaching reference for future research on similar topics.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of the process of improving teacher competence in compiling teaching materials based on Pancasila student profiles in Elementary Schools. This study uses a quasi-experimental method of one group pre-test post-test design which includes 3 steps, namely: pre-test, treatment, and post-test by utilizing the implementation of the scaffolding program as a treatment to be carried out. The scaffolding program in this study has 3 stages, namely; (1) Modeling, (2) Provision of Materials and (3) Final Stage. This study was conducted on 31 teachers from levels I-IV at SDN Harapan Baru III, Bekasi City, located at Jl. Raya Perjuangan No. 48, RT.002 / RW.003, Harapan Baru, Kec. Bekasi Utara, Bekasi City, West Java 17123. The rationale for selecting this school is based on the condition of teacher literacy competence in compiling teaching materials that need to be improved. The results of this study are seen based on a comparison of the average results of the pre-test and post-test which obtained a sig value of 0.000 and less than 0.05 which proves that this study is considered successful in improving teacher literacy competency so that it can make it easier for teachers to prepare appropriate teaching materials, of course teaching materials based on the Pancasila Student Profile.

Abstract

Cultural stereotypes in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks may influence how students shape their perspectives towards the cultures being studied, yet little research discusses how cultural stereotypes emerge in ELT textbooks. This study aimed to describe the cultural stereotypes in an ELT textbook published by the Indonesian government. The book being analyzed was entitled English for Nusantara SMP/MTs KELAS VII for the seventh grade of junior high school. The data were collected and analyzed through content analysis to point out the valid inference. The findings showed that cultural stereotypes were depicted in the textbook in several ways: appearance, gender, behavior, and lifestyle. This study may provide an insight into how cultural stereotypes are depicted in the textbook, and it may contribute practically for textbook designers or material developers to take into account how cultural values will be included into textbook in order to avoid creating stereotypes for a particular culture. Furthermore, this study may also help the teachers take into account cultural stereotypes in designing and selecting learning materials for students.

Abstract

Writing English as a foreign language in academic setting requires students’ competence and creativity. Teacher or lecturer needs to apply an appropriate teaching method which can assist students to develop their potential writing skill. In addition, the development of technology enable teacher to conduct blended learning environment to facilitate students’ learning. This research aimed at investigating the effect of scaffolding and writing process in blended learning context.  Quasi experimental research is utilized to know whether the combination of scaffolding and writing process give effect students’ writing achievement. Forty-nine students of English Department were involved as the participant of this study. Writing test in the form of pre-test and post-test were used to collect the data of students’ writing score. And then, the data was analyzed by using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The result indicates the significant effect of scaffolding and writing approach on students’ writing.  The research’s finding may have implication for English teachers in writing courses as well as curriculum developer.

Abstract

Madrassas in Pakistan serve as vital institutions for religious education, providing free teaching and accommodation to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. However, several Madrassa graduates face financial challenges upon entering the job market as a result of the rapidly changing technological environment. The majority of these graduates get employment in low-wage roles such as mosque management, madrassa instruction, or labour jobs in profit-oriented enterprises. Madrassas do not include non-religious subjects or technical education in its curriculum, and the government has shown little inclination to support these institutions. An investigation was carried out in the Khairpur area, whereby a sample of 250 Madrassa graduates was selected at random and subjected to a survey in order to analyse these issues. Based on the survey findings, these graduates had difficulties in providing financial assistance for their families. To improve their quality of life, it is recommended that the government provide scholarships and recognise the value of their degrees by granting them credit. The report also indicates that Madrassa graduates should engage in vocational training programmes to facilitate their successful integration into the labour market. In summary, the research highlights the economic challenges that Madrassa graduates in Pakistan encounter and proposes strategies to improve their prospects for the future.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender roles in the government-published English for Nusantara VII textbook for seventh-grade students, focusing on the portrayal of male and female characters in imagery and the actions they perform. Gender representation in educational materials is crucial, as it can shape students’ perceptions of societal roles. Despite efforts to promote gender equality in education, textbooks often exhibit gender biases, either by underrepresenting females or depicting them in stereotypical roles. This research addresses the gap in existing studies by examining the frequency and types of activities associated with male and female characters in the textbook. A content analysis method was used to quantify and analyze the presence and actions of male and female characters. The findings reveal a significant gender imbalance: male characters appeared more frequently and were often depicted in active, leadership, and outdoor roles, while female characters were more passive, engaging in stereotypically feminine tasks like reading and household chores. The implication of this study is that such gender biases in educational materials may reinforce traditional stereotypes, potentially influencing how students perceive gender roles in society. Addressing this issue is vital for promoting gender equality in education. Future research should explore the impact of these representations on students' learning and development, and seek to create more balanced and inclusive educational resources that challenge traditional gender norms.

Abstract

The trend of Qur’anic recitation competitions, popularly known as Musabaqah, has grown rapidly across the Muslim globe since its inception at the international level in Malaysia in 1961 as a way to display the importance and value of Quranic recitation and memorization and inspire Muslims to do their best to understand and cherish the divine message of the Quran. This study examines Musabaqah's contribution to promoting Arabic in northern Nigeria, with a focus on Kaduna State. The research uses a qualitative method to collect data through observation and interviews with selected individuals within the state. The findings indicate that Musabaqah has a positive impact on Arabic language learning and use in the state, as it creates a competitive spirit among Muslims to learn more about the Arabic language in order to have a better understanding of the Quran and its sciences and increases community interest in learning Arabic. Therefore, the study recommends that the Nigerian Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the bodies regulating Musabaqah and teaching Arabic and Islamic studies, organize seminars and workshops that promote Arabic and preserve its cultural heritage. Finally, offering incentives, awards, and scholarships will motivate the competitors and enhance their capacity to participate favourably with any of their counterparts globally.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to explore how English Department students perceive peer assessment as a means to enhance critical thinking in writing. The research involved forty English students who had previous experience with peer assessment in their writing class. Data collection was achieved through a four-point Likert-Scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data analysis using thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings indicated that the majority of students (92.84%) viewed peer assessment positively, as they believed it raised their awareness and consciousness of writing skills. Moreover, 81.89% of students expressed that peer assessment was beneficial in fostering better critical thinking skills, leading them to approach writing more critically. Students generally regarded their peers as capable of providing valuable feedback on their writing, resulting in improved critical thinking due to the reviews they received or provided. However, a small number of students had negative perceptions of peer assessment for improving critical thinking. Their reluctance stemmed from low motivation to actively participate in the peer assessment process and the belief that their friends evaluated their writing unfairly based on personal relationships.

Abstract

Nowadays, video games interaction performed by the characters potentially offers the potential research analysing several forms of languages, including in the field of translation. Gacha Games, one of the most popular game providers serves the interesting plot and attractive story lines which involves many forms of communication. This study aims to identify the translation strategies from English to Indonesian of playable characters' responses in planet Jarilo-VI on a video game called Honkai: Star Rail version 2.2.0 by Gacha Games. In determining the translation of ten characters' reactions, the researcher applied a qualitative descriptive method by using Van Oers' selected translation strategies for video games. The research results show that only ten of the thirteen strategies were found: Contextualisation (26.79%), Regional Expression (6.22%), Transcreation (2.39%), Description (5.50%), Core translation (0.72%), Omission (11.24%), Borrowing (41.87%), Calque (1.44%), Literal translation (3.35%), and Adaptation (0.48%). From 13 translation strategies, borrowing was popularly used in analysing the subtitle. It indicated that most of subtitle used in video games tended to provide several meanings of special terms used in the game. Borrowing strategies made the researcher could not easily translate the special terms into the target language.
