Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the guided writing method on fifth-grade elementary school students’ ability to write fictional narrative texts. This research was motivated by students’ low ability to develop story ideas, organize text structure coherently, and use appropriate vocabulary and language conventions. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method (pre-experimental design) with a one group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 20 fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah Perumnas Makassar. Data were collected through a fictional narrative writing test, while data analysis techniques included descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test. The results showed that the average score of students’ fictional narrative writing skills increased from 56.35 in the pretest to 82.15 in the posttest. The hypothesis testing results indicated a significance value (Sig.) of 0.000 < 0.05, which means that there was a significant effect of the guided writing method on students’ ability to write fictional narrative texts. All students achieved learning mastery at the posttest stage. These findings indicate that the guided writing method is effective in improving elementary school students’ ability to write fictional narrative texts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the barriers to reading, writing, and arithmetic skills among first-grade students at SDN 5 Jambangan and to identify the internal and external factors influencing these difficulties. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and parents, and document analysis of students’ learning outcomes. The findings reveal that difficulties in reading, writing, and arithmetic are caused by a combination of internal factors, including low phonological awareness, underdeveloped cognitive abilities, weak fine motor skills, and low learning motivation. In addition, external factors contributing to these challenges include limited academic guidance at home, insufficient learning media and facilities, family communication patterns, and unsupportive learning environments. Observation results indicate that 14.8% of students experience difficulties in reading and writing, while 7.4% encounter challenges in arithmetic skills. These difficulties are primarily associated with low phonological awareness and inadequate fine motor development. The findings highlight that barriers to reading, writing, and arithmetic are multidimensional in nature and require integrated interventions involving both schools and families. This study recommends the enhancement of phonics-based instructional methods, strengthened early literacy and numeracy stimulation, and more intensive collaboration between teachers and parents to support the holistic development of students’ foundational academic skills.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a major public health issue in Indonesia and poses serious long-term consequences for the quality of human resources. This condition results from prolonged inadequate nutritional intake, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life, leading to impaired physical growth and suboptimal brain development. The impact of stunting is not limited to short stature but also extends to delayed cognitive development, which directly affects academic achievement and learning capacity among elementary school children. This study aims to analyze the relationship between stunting, cognitive development, and academic achievement among elementary school students, as well as to examine its long-term implications for human resource quality. This research employs a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study sample was randomly selected from elementary school children living in areas with a high prevalence of stunting. Data collection involved anthropometric measurements to determine stunting status based on World Health Organization (WHO) standards, standardized cognitive tests to assess children’s cognitive abilities, and academic records and questionnaires to evaluate learning achievement. The collected data were analyzed using inferential statistical methods, including correlation and regression analyses, to identify the relationship and influence of stunting on cognitive development and academic achievement. The results are expected to indicate that stunted children demonstrate lower cognitive performance and poorer academic achievement compared to their non-stunted peers. These findings highlight the critical importance of comprehensive nutritional interventions and early stimulation, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life, as strategic efforts to prevent stunting and to improve educational outcomes and the overall quality of human resources in the future. Keywords: stunting, cognitive development, academic achievement, elementary school children.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the numeracy skills of second-grade students at SDN 03 Kerangan Purun in mathematics learning based on the Independent Curriculum. The research method used was qualitative with a descriptive approach and a case study design. The study subjects consisted of 13 second-grade students, including 8 boys and 5 girls. Data collection techniques were conducted through observations using a Likert scale, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, and documentation. The results showed that the distribution of students' numeracy skills varied, with 61.5% of students falling into the "Good" category and 38.5% falling into the "Poor" category. Specific findings revealed that students generally possessed procedural understanding but were weak in deep conceptual understanding, such as an inability to explain the rationale for number values or mathematical thinking processes. Although the implementation of the Independent Curriculum through project-based learning successfully increased the enthusiasm of students with strong foundations, challenges arose for students with lower basic skills who required intensive support (scaffolding). Overall, students' numeracy skills still need to be improved through more innovative and consistent learning strategies to strengthen their mathematical foundations.
