Abstract

Smoking is one of the leading causes of global mortality, significantly impacting reproductive health in both men and women. In Indonesia, the prevalence of adolescent smokers increased from 7.20% in 2013 to 9.10% in 2018, and it is projected to reach 16% by 2030 without effective interventions. The impact of smoking on reproductive health includes fertility disorders, reproductive cancer risks, and hormonal complications, which are often poorly understood by adolescents, particularly in areas with limited access to health information such as Sumenep, Madura. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between adolescents' knowledge of the dangers of smoking to reproductive health and their intention to avoid smoking. Additionally, it seeks to provide scientific insights into the importance of reproductive health education as part of smoking prevention strategies. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 200 adolescents aged 12–22 years, selected using proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected through validated structured questionnaires, covering knowledge about the dangers of smoking and intentions to avoid smoking. Data analysis was performed using chi-square tests and logistic regression to identify relationships between variables. Results: The analysis revealed a significant relationship between adolescents' knowledge of the dangers of smoking to reproductive health and their intention to avoid smoking (p = 0.000). Adolescents with high levels of knowledge were more likely to have a strong intention to avoid smoking (OR = 3.25; 95% CI: 1.92–5.51). Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive relationship with an r-value of 0.373.Conclusion: Knowledge about the dangers of smoking to reproductive health plays a crucial role in shaping adolescents' intentions to avoid smoking. The findings of this study underscore the importance of comprehensive reproductive health education programs to increase adolescents' awareness and reduce smoking prevalence, especially in areas with limited access to health information.

Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are among the most severe complications of diabetes mellitus, leading to significant morbidity, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs. The economic burden of DFU treatment is primarily driven by hospitalization expenses, surgical interventions, and complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, gangrene, and osteomyelitis. Objective: This study examines the direct medical costs associated with DFU inpatient care, identifying key cost drivers and variations across different healthcare systems. Method: A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, PubMed Central, and ScienceDirect to analyze peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2024. The review focused on DFU-related hospitalization costs, surgical expenditures, and the impact of comorbidities on financial burden. Results: Hospitalization constituted the largest cost component, with expenses escalating due to surgical procedures, particularly amputations. Economic disparities between high-, middle-, and low-income countries influenced DFU-related expenditures, highlighting differences in treatment accessibility and cost structures. Conclusions: Standardized management strategies and cost-effective interventions are essential to optimize resource allocation and improve patient outcomes. This study provides insights into the financial challenges of DFU treatment, emphasizing the need for healthcare policy reforms to mitigate economic burden and enhance care efficiency.

Abstract

Carbonated soft drinks are drinks that can cause damage to the liver if consumed excessively. The combination of honey and black cumin as an antioxidant agent has hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects with a capacity of 3-4 times compared to honey or black cumin seeds alone. The aim of this research was to determine the effect on macroscopic and microscopic observations of the liver of Rattus norvegicus given a combination of honey and black cumin in graded doses, namely concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75% after being induced by soft drinks and the damage that occurred when given in doses and the specified time. This research was carried out experimentally at the Cytohistotechnology Laboratory Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Nasional. The research was divided into 6 groups, namely 3 control groups and 3 treatment groups. The results of macroscopic observations showed differences in colour, size, fatty and similarities in liver texture. The results of microscopic observations showed normal cells and damage such as hydropic degeneration, parenchymatous degeneration, pyknosis necrosis, karyorrhexic necrosis, and karyolysis necrosis. The results of the test using One Way ANOVA and followed by Post Hoc Duncan can be concluded that giving a combination of honey and 75% black cumin as much as 2 mL/200 gr weight of rats can have a protective effect on macroscopic and microscopic examination of the liver of Rattus norvegicus after being induced by soft drinks.
