Abstract

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is found in up to one-third of individuals with epilepsy who have received appropriate therapy and this condition causes significant child morbidity and mortality. Epilepsy that appears at an early age is at higher risk of developing DRE. Objective to assess the effect of age on the characteristics of seizure severity in children with DRE. This study used a cross-sectional design involving 36 DRE patients aged 2-18 years at the Child Neurology Polyclinic, Adam Malik Hospital Medan, from September to October 2024. Seizure severity characteristics were assessed using the Global Assessment of the Severity of Epilepsy (GASE) questionnaire instrument. The categorical data are presented in the form of proportions and the effect of age on seizure severity characteristics was analyzed using the chi-square test. There were 36 children with DRE in this study, predominantly aged ≥ 10 years. Bivariate analysis showed a significant effect of age in children with drug resistant epilepsy only on the disruption of activity experienced by children with a p value = 0.036 (p <0.05). Most patients aged ≥ 10 years did not experience activity disorders or experienced mild activity disorders (73.9%), while in patients aged <10 years, most patients experienced severe activity disorders (61.5%). The age of children with drug resistant epilepsy have a significant effect on daily activity disorders.

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) results from insulin resistance and is linked to obesity, which accounts for 80% of diabetes cases. The elderly are particularly vulnerable, facing high treatment costs and self-care challenges, including blood sugar monitoring and diet adherence. Complications include hypoglycemia, neuropathy, and cardiovascular diseases. Telenursing is a promising intervention that enhances adherence and provides remote education. However, further research is needed to assess its long-term effectiveness. Objective: this study aims to assess the effectiveness of telenursing in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly. Method: This scoping review follows the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, analyzing studies from ProQuest, PubMed, and Scopus. Inclusion criteria focused on studies evaluating the impact of telenursing on elderly patients with T2DM using quantitative or mixed-method approaches. Results: From 716 screened articles, seven met the inclusion criteria. Most studies were conducted in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Slovenia, with one multinational study involving ten countries. Six studies employed quantitative methodologies, including randomized controlled trials and clinical studies. Findings indicate that telenursing significantly improves medication adherence, blood glucose control, and self-management. It reduces the need for in-person visits and enhances patient education, leading to better glycemic control and lower complication risks. Conclusions: Telenursing proves to be an effective approach for managing T2DM in the elderly, promoting adherence and self-care while reducing healthcare facility visits. Further research is required to evaluate its long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

Abstract

Prenatal development determines whether a child is normal or abnormal. The health of the mother and her nutritional intake during pre- and pregnancy will influence the birth of a healthy baby. The nutritional problems during pregnancy during antenatal check-ups are vital because nutrition is one of the factors that affect the incidence of chronic energy deficiency (CHD) in pregnant women. This research aims to prepare a prediction system for pregnant women at risk of anemia by applying fuzzy logic. This research will use steps that include problem identification, preparation of input variables , application of fuzzy logic and system testing. This research is expected to produce output variables in the form of predictions of pregnant women at risk of anemia or not at risk. The results of this study can provide valid initial information about the anemia-related conditions of a pregnant woman to avoid unwanted things during childbirth and postpartum. The rule base contains input variables (hemoglobin, blood pressure, conjunctiva examination) and output variables in the form of anemia prediction and its level in a pregnant women.

Abstract

Fever is one of the common symptoms in children that can be caused by viral or bacterial infections. Treatment of fever generally uses antipyretic drugs, but natural methods such as compresses are often applied as additional therapy. Aloe vera is known to have antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties that can help lower body temperature naturally. Implementing the intervention of giving Aloe vera compresses to reduce fever in children based on the results of body temperature measurements before and after the intervention in 10 child patients with fever. This study analyzed body temperature changes before and after administering Aloe vera compresses to 10 children with fever. Temperature was measured with a digital thermometer, and the significance of the changes was determined using appropriate statistical methods. The results of the intervention showed that out of 10 patients, 8 children experienced a decrease in body temperature after being given Aloe vera compresses, while 2 children did not show significant changes in temperature. The temperature decrease that occurred ranged from 0.1°C to 0.3°C after the intervention. This shows that Aloe vera compresses can help lower children's body temperature, although its effectiveness may vary depending on the condition of each patient. Aloe vera compress can be a safe non-pharmacological therapy alternative to help reduce fever in children. However, further research is needed with a larger sample size and consideration of other factors that may affect its effectiveness.
