Abstract

Patient safety culture refers to a pattern of behavior of both individuals and organizations that consistently seek to reduce the risk of harm or injury to patients due to the services provided, based on shared beliefs and values. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, perceptions, and workload of nurses on patient safety culture at Beriman Hospital, Balikpapan City. The method used in this study is a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, involving all nurses working in the service unit of Beriman Hospital, Balikpapan City, totaling 129 respondents (total sampling). This study was conducted from February to March 2025, with data collection using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Univariate data analysis, chi-square test, and logistic regression. The results showed good knowledge 81.4%, good perception 51.2%, high workload 50.4% and patient safety culture value 58.9%. The results of the chi-square test sig value of knowledge: 0.600 and perception: 0.302, both (p> 0.05) indicating no relationship between knowledge and perception of nurses towards patient safety culture. However, the sig value for workload is 0.006 (p <0.05) indicating a relationship between workload and patient safety culture. The results of the logistic regression test show that nurses' workload has a significant effect on patient safety culture with a significance value (Sig) of 0.009. The Odds Ratio (OR) value of 2.712 indicates that nurses with a higher workload are 2.7 times more likely to influence patient safety culture compared to those with a low workload. The conclusion is that workload is the factor most related to patient safety culture.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often accompanied by impairment in motor skills and sensory processing, which impacts a child's kinesthetic development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of sensory motor training interventions in improving the kinesthetic skills of autistic children through a meta-analysis of four national journals in 2021-2023. The four journals include direct interventions in the form of physical exercises, creative media such as batik, and educational game tools Maze Dua Sisi (MADASI). At the time of the journal search the keywords "sensorimotor intervention" AND "autism", "motor development" AND "children with ASD". The results of the analysis showed that sensory motor interventions consistently improved children's movement coordination skills, body balance, fine motor, and independence. The effectiveness of the intervention was strongly influenced by the duration of the exercise, parental involvement, and individual approaches according to the characteristics of the child. This study recommends the integration of sensory motor interventions into the education and nursing services of autistic children as a holistic effort to improve their quality of life. These findings also emphasize the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and family involvement in supporting ongoing therapy outcomes.

Abstract

Cardiovascular fitness, quantified as maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂Max), is a significant indicator of exercise tolerance and cardiovascular health. Sedentary behavior and aging are determinants that contribute to endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and reduced cardiac output, leading to a decline in VO₂Max. Cocoa Flavanols (CFs), rich in (−)-epicatechin, have been found to enhance endothelial function, nitric oxide bioavailability, and reduce blood pressure and hence might be beneficial for cardiovascular adaptation and VO₂Max improvement. This scoping review explores the potential of CFs to enhance cardiovascular function and exercise tolerance. Method: Two randomized controlled trials were employed in this scoping review. The first trial examined the effect of 30-day CF supplementation (1000 mg/day) on cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy elderly adults. The second trial examined the effect of 7-day CF supplementation (400 mg/day) on pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics and exercise tolerance in middle-age sedentary adults. Results: In older adults, CF supplementation improved VO₂peak, oxygen pulse, exercise capacity, and endothelial function and lowered blood pressure in middle-aged sedentary adults, CFs improved VO₂ kinetics during moderate-intensity exercise, indicating enhanced oxygen delivery, but not exercise tolerance during severe-intensity exercise. Such results highlight CFs' positive effects on vascular health and efficiency of moderate-intensity exercise. Conclusion: Cocoa flavanols may enhance cardiovascular adaptation and exercise performance by improving endothelial function, reducing arterial stiffness, and optimizing oxygen uptake during exercise. Further studies are required to evaluate their effect on maximal exercise performance and long-term cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract

Hygiene in the practice of makeup artists (MUAs) is a crucial aspect in Introduction: Ensuring the health and safety of clients. Violations of hygiene principles can increase the risk of skin infections, irritation, and disease transmission. This study aims to identify the implementation of hygiene standards practiced by MUAs and how these practices reflect respect for clients' health rights. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. This study employed purposive sampling to select informants, a technique that involves selecting samples from the population based on the researcher's objectives and specific criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 professional MUAs and direct observation of their work practices. The data was collected by a questionnaire as its research instrument, which has been validated through a validity test conducted by an expert. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques to identify patterns, trends, and practices that either reflect or violate hygiene principles. The results show that most MUAs were aware of the importance of hygiene; however, shortcomings remain in practices such as the use of unsterilized tools and makeup products being applied to multiple clients without disinfection. Four key themes were identified in this study: Factors Hindering Hygiene Implementation, The Relationship Between Hygiene and Clients' Health Rights, The Importance of Professionalization and Certification, and Implications of Professional Ethics. As hygiene awareness continues to grow globally—especially after the COVID-19 pandemic—there is an urgent need to improve practices in beauty services. In Bali, a top wedding destination, the stakes are even higher.

Abstract

Cancer is a chronic disease that not only affects patients physically, but also causes significant psychosocial distress. These psychosocial aspects have been shown to reduce patients' quality of life, yet are often overlooked in clinical practice. In fact, psychosocial-based interventions can strengthen emotional resilience and improve overall therapeutic outcomes. This review aims to evaluate the contribution of psychosocial aspects to cancer patients' quality of life based on recent scientific literature. This study was a systematic literature review by searching articles from two major databases, namely PubMed and Google Scholar, within the period 2020-2025. The search strategy was organized based on the PICO framework using keywords such as “psychosocial factors”, “quality of life”, and “cancer patients”. From a total of 180 articles found, 28 duplicate articles were eliminated, leaving 152 unique articles. The next stage of screening was done by reviewing the titles and abstracts, so 79 irrelevant articles were excluded and 73 articles continued to the next stage. At the eligibility assessment stage, 32 articles were selected after full-text reading and evaluation based on the inclusion criteria, which included discussing the relationship between psychosocial aspects and the quality of life of cancer patients, being available in full-text format, and written in either English or Indonesian. Finally, an in-depth evaluation of the quality and relevance of the articles was conducted, resulting in only 10 articles being deemed eligible for analysis in this literature review. The literature review indicated that psychosocial aspects such as anxiety, depression, coping, social support, and spirituality were shown to determine the quality of life of cancer patients. Psychosocial aspects are important determinants of cancer patients' quality of life.

Abstract

Date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are by-products of the date processing industry that are often discarded, even though they contain potential antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract from date seeds as a sustainable approach to valorizing food waste. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of the Center for Food and Nutrition Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Date seeds were obtained from small-scale food industries in Klaten, Central Java, then cleaned, dried, macerated, and sieved through mesh 80. A total of 50 grams of powdered seeds were extracted using the Soxhlet method with methanol for 6 hours. The antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH method by reading the absorbance at 515 nm. The results showed DPPH radical inhibition percentages of 58.87% and 48.75% in two replications, with an average of 53.81%. The data were analyzed descriptively based on the percentage of radical scavenging activity. These findings suggest that date seeds possess considerable antioxidant activity and can be utilized as a natural antioxidant source, while also supporting the upcycling of local food waste into functional food ingredients.

Abstract

Palmarosa essential oil (Cymbopogon martinii) is known for its potential as a natural therapeutic agent. It contains geraniol compounds with demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. However, direct application of palmarosa essential oil to the skin is less effective and may cause irritation. Objective: This study aimed to develop a topical formulation in the form of an emulgel containing palmarosa essential oil, using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) as the gelling agent. Method: The emulgel was prepared in three different formulations containing 2%, 4%, and 6% concentrations of palmarosa essential oil. The resulting preparations were evaluated for quality through organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and emulsion type. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: The emulsion type test indicated that all formulations were oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions. Differences in palmarosa essential oil concentration influenced the physical properties of the emulgel, but all three formulations met the standard requirements for good physical quality of emulgel preparations. Conclusions: the three emulgel formulations containing palmarosa essential oil fulfilled the standards for acceptable physical properties.

Abstract

Skill mix includes the nurse workforce size, education level, and clinical experience, nursing hours per patient day, the ratio of nurses to patients (qualified and unqualified), and the various skills and training required to fulfil patient care needs. The aim of this study was to optimally manage the skill mix management system in nursing by allocating various skills and roles within the nursing team to provide safe, effective, and efficient care. This study used a mini-project and analysed the results and implementation gaps through a literature review. Problems were assessed using fishbone diagrams, with alternative solutions developed in a Plan of Action (POA) framework consisting of implementation, Evaluation, and Follow-up phases. Participants were nursing staff, consisting of 2 head nurses and 63 nurses (Primary Nurses and Associate Nurse). The implementation of this study began with the preparation and workshop of technical guidelines on skill mix management in nursing. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, field observations, and document reviews conducted from April 22 to May 16, 2024, involving nursing managers and staff on the 3rd and 6th floors of Inpatient Building A. The data were then analyzed descriptively using the nursing management function framework, which includes planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.Evaluation, through observation and interviews, showed that 80% of the technical guidelines were well structured. There was a focus on care planning patterns, patient delegation models, and preparation of service schedules. Effective nursing skill mix management requires risk mitigation strategies, such as the FMEA approach, as well as close supervision and improved staff competence
