Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted traditional psychotherapy practices, prompting a rapid transition to online modalities. This qualitative study investigates how Brazilian clinical psychologists adapted to online psychotherapy during and after the pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five psychologists, each with an average professional experience of 8.9 years. Using the Iramuteq software for lexical analysis, six thematic classes were identified: uncertainties during the transition, emerging possibilities, adaptability movements, pandemic context, new professional perspectives, and academic and professional trajectories. The findings highlight significant challenges, including managing technological tools, maintaining therapeutic relationships, and addressing client concerns in virtual settings. However, the transition also revealed notable advantages, such as reduced operational costs, enhanced flexibility, and expanded access to psychological care. The analysis underscores the critical role of digital competencies, including technical, communicational, and cultural skills, in ensuring effective online therapy. Additionally, the results point to gaps in academic training and professional preparation for telepsychology, emphasizing the need for curriculum reform to include digital literacy and teletherapy-specific strategies. The study concludes that online psychotherapy represents not only a response to crisis but also a sustainable model for expanding access to mental health care. It calls for targeted professional development and ethical guidelines to support psychologists in navigating digital environments effectively. These insights contribute to understanding the evolving dynamics of psychotherapy and provide actionable recommendations for improving digital mental health services in Brazil and beyond.

Abstract

In the digital age, online dating applications have revolutionized the way young adults form romantic connections, providing both opportunities and challenges. Understanding the psychological impacts of these platforms is crucial. Young adults, while navigating romantic pursuits and various developmental challenges, are susceptible to feelings of loneliness. Dating anxiety is a significant factor that can exacerbate loneliness within this demographic. Moreover, gender differences may influence individuals' experiences in dating situations. This research aims to explore the relationship between dating anxiety and loneliness among users of dating applications and to examine the role of gender as a moderating variable in this relationship. The study employs a quantitative correlational approach, incorporating demographic data and two scales: the Dating Anxiety Scale and the UCLA Loneliness Scale 3. The research participants consist of 250 early adults aged 20-34 who actively use online dating applications. Data analysis involves descriptive analysis and moderation analysis using the Jamovi software. The research findings indicate a significant direct relationship between dating anxiety and loneliness (p less than 0.001). Furthermore, gender was found to have no significant impact on loneliness (p more than 0.05), and the interaction between dating anxiety and gender was not significant (p more than 0.05). This suggests a uniform impact among both genders in the relationship between dating anxiety and loneliness. The study highlights the complex dynamics influencing loneliness among online dating application users. The findings enhance theoretical understanding of how dating anxiety relates to loneliness. Practically, these insights can help developers create features that reduce anxiety and loneliness. Future research should identify other factors influencing these dynamics to further enrich theoretical and practical knowledge in this field.

Abstract

The quality of teacher-student relationships has a profound impact on the learning process and outcomes, particularly in culturally diverse contexts like Indonesia. In Indonesian secondary schools, where cultural characteristics such as power distance and collectivism shape interactions, enhancing teacher-student relationships through effective communication strategies is crucial. This study aims to identify and analyze communication strategies that are most appropriate for fostering interpersonal relationships in Indonesian secondary schools. Using a qualitative literature review method, following PRISMA guidelines, this study synthesizes 22 communication behaviors from existing literature, which were categorized into four main themes: care, immediacy, clarity, and disclosure. Notably, while the strategies of care, immediacy, and clarity align with previous research and are adapted to the Indonesian cultural context, the study found a significant lack of teacher disclosure, a critical strategy for building close interpersonal relationships. This gap suggests that cultural factors such as high power distance may inhibit the use of disclosure as a relational tool in Indonesian classrooms. The study’s findings provide practical implications for teachers aiming to improve their communication practices, suggesting that culturally appropriate strategies, particularly in balancing authority and relational closeness, are necessary to foster stronger interpersonal connections with students.

Abstract

Medical personnel is a profession with a high workload. High work demands can lead to a decline in physical and emotional health. An in-depth understanding of the impact of workload on health, especially mental health, is crucial to implementing measures for their well-being. This literature review aims to gather and compare available information to produce an apparent picture of the mental health of medical personnel and influencing factors. A comprehensive search was conducted utilizing a variety of electronic databases, including Scopus, Science Direct, Springer Link, ProQuest, EBSCO, MED-LINE, and Google Scholar. The literature search focused on papers assessed with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) methodology. We identified 16 studies that reported the criteria for in-depth analysis. The study concluded that overburdened medical personnel are prone to burnout, which in turn has the potential to lead to mental health problems. Common disorders are burnout, depression, anxiety, and abnormal stress. Further research sourced from internal individuals needs to be done so that it is expected to be more robust and consistent, considering that medical personnel are very likely to work in more than one institution during the process.

Abstract

Significant cognitive impairments are found in late life depression. This situation brings to mind the question of what are the common and distinct mechanisms of late life depression and dementia. In this review, neural and psychological mechanism are discussed within the scope of denominator and hallmark for both disorders. It is searched several databases e.g. MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection from 1974 to 2024 by using variant terms for the focal epilepsy subtypes and social cognition constructs. The pathology of dementia was correlated with late-life depression Studies indicate that depression may be an etiological factor for dementia as well as an increased risk. Also, many life-related stressors can lead to results such as increased reactive oxygen species, inflammatory responses, suppression of neurogenesis, and apical dendritic atrophy and altered functional connectivity in the medial prefrontal cortex. Based on this, it is possible to say that psychological stress factors increase the incidence of the disease in the development of dementia, just like in depression. Late depression should not be labeled as dementia because of they share similar symptoms and should be evaluated clinically correct so that it is not misdiagnosed. Besides, it is substantial to comprehend the relationship between the aging population and the risk of depression and dementia for current and future studies, especially in terms of prevention and treatment.

Abstract

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) individuals face various social challenges, including discrimination and pressure that affect their ability to build interpersonal relationships, especially with heterosexual individuals. This study aims to explore the friendship dynamics between gay and lesbian individuals and heterosexuals, focusing on social experiences and interactions among young Indonesians. This qualitative research used a phenomenological approach with semi-structured interviews, and the data were thematically analyzed. Three participants, namely gay, lesbian, and heterosexual individuals, were selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that Indonesian society still has difficulty accepting sexual orientations that differ from heterosexuals, with the self-internalized stigma on LGBT individuals further limiting their freedom to express their sexual identity. However, solidarity across sexual orientations is visible, especially among young people, who are more open to sexual diversity, although their attitudes vary. This research emphasizes the importance of social acceptance in reducing discrimination and creating inclusive spaces for LGBT individuals.

Abstract

Underage marriage (UM) has increased globally, including in Indonesia. This was triggered by changes in the Marriage Law (UU) which increased the minimum age for women to marry from 16 to 19 years old and was followed by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study examines the psychological dynamics of society related to changes in the minimum age limit for marriage from the perspective of Religious Court judges in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was used by conducting semi-structured interviews with 20 judges from 16 Religious Courts in Indonesia who handle marriage dispensation cases. This process was followed by data collation, coding, classification, and analysed by the deductive thematic technique. As a result, participants conveyed the background of the age limit change and the public's reaction after the change. Some participants stated that the age limit change is not the authority of the court or judge. Some others said that the increase in the minimum age limit for marriage was carried out based on the risks behind underage marriage. These risks are psychological factors, reducing the number of UM cases, preventing divorce, gender equality, and reasons for education, work, and physical condition. Public showed various responses; obeying the rules, not knowing about the regulatory changes, and being against it. Basically, the new Marriage Law seeks to stop the UM trend. The government needs to conduct socialization about the age limit change and the risks of UM. Cooperation from various parties is also needed, especially from parents who need to pay more attention to their children.

Abstract

Adolescents often struggle with low self-confidence, exacerbated by negative thought patterns and irrational beliefs that hinder their social and emotional development. This study explores the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring, a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), in enhancing self-confidence among adolescents. The intervention focused on identifying, challenging, and replacing negative thoughts with constructive alternatives. A single-subject case study design was employed, with pretest and posttest measures on the Self-Confidence Scale to assess changes. Results indicated a significant increase in self-confidence scores, from 72 (low confidence) to 97 (moderate confidence). Qualitative data revealed behavioral improvements, such as reduced hesitation in social interactions and increased willingness to express opinions. The subject's belief in irrational thoughts, like fearing social judgment, was reduced, demonstrating cognitive restructuring’s role in shifting negative perceptions. This study highlights the transformative potential of cognitive counseling in fostering adolescent self-confidence. By addressing irrational beliefs and encouraging adaptive thinking, cognitive restructuring not only improved the subject’s self-esteem but also promoted positive social behavior. These findings align with existing literature, emphasizing the value of CBT-based interventions in promoting mental well-being. The study underscores the importance of integrating cognitive restructuring techniques into educational and counseling programs to support adolescents facing self-confidence challenges. However, its single-case design limits generalizability, warranting further research with larger, diverse samples. This approach offers a promising pathway for practitioners to help adolescents develop resilience and a healthier self-concept.

Abstract

Bullying among adolescents remains a critical issue that affects students' psychological and social well-being. This study analyzes the effectiveness of various school-based interventions in reducing bullying behavior and identifies key factors influencing their success. Utilizing a systematic literature review approach, this study examines research published between 2019 and 2024 from databases such as ScienceDirect, Garuda, and SpringerLink. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal checklist and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), version 2018, were employed to assess study quality. The findings indicate that school-based interventions are effective when they emphasize relationship-building, empathy, and holistic involvement of all school stakeholders. Consistent program implementation, teacher training, and parental engagement play a crucial role in intervention success. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and cultural resistance hinder program effectiveness. Additionally, the study highlights that while interventions improve students' affective empathy, cognitive empathy remains underdeveloped, suggesting the need for more targeted approaches. Practical recommendations include the integration of social-emotional learning in school curricula, teacher professional development programs, and culturally adapted interventions. Policymakers should establish sustainable anti-bullying policies with clear guidelines for intervention and support mechanisms. Future research should explore long-term intervention impacts, digital-based anti-bullying strategies, and the role of genetic and cultural factors in bullying behavior. This study enriches the existing literature by emphasizing the importance of localized, evidence-based intervention strategies tailored to different educational and cultural contexts.

Abstract

The Bugis-Makassar tribes are two large tribes from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, renowned for their migration tradition. Many Buginese-Makassarese young people continue this tradition by seeking better educational opportunities outside their hometown. This study aims to explore the social identity of Buginese-Makassarese migrant students in foreign cities. Using a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach and interpretive paradigm, data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis, which resulted in five key themes. The findings reveal that Buginese-Makassarese migrant students feel secure in revealing their social identity, as they maintain a positive balance in their relations with both ingroups and outgroups. They display strong cohesiveness and empathy when interacting within the ingroup and exhibit self-esteem, tolerance, and effective adaptation when engaging with the outgroup. Notably, the cultural values of siri’ na pacce—which emphasize dignity, empathy, and mutual support—play a crucial role in shaping their social identity and promoting psychological well-being. These values contribute significantly to the student’s self-concept and their ability to navigate complex social interactions in a new environment. This study provides valuable insights into how migrant students, particularly from the Buginese-Makassarese ethnic group, can adjust and maintain their cultural values while adapting to life in different cities.
