Abstract

Teenage girls are at high risk for anemia because their Fe needs increase due to growth and menstruation. Anemia can cause fatigue, reduced learning concentration, low academic achievement, reduced work efficiency, and decreased endurance. One of the government's efforts to prevent anemia is by implementing an Fe supplementation program for teenage girls. The implementation did not go well because there were still many teenage girls who were reluctant to take Fe supplements. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of Fe supplement consumption on the incidence of anemia in female students at SMAK Tunas Gloria and SMAS Beringin Kupang City. This research was conducted in November - December 2020 using an analytical survey method with a cross sectional study. The population in this entire study was found to be 61 (31 students at Tunas Gloria High School and 30 students at Beringin High School). The sample for this study were 61 female students. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate using chi square. The results showed there was a relationship between the consumption of Fe supplements and the incidence of anemia (p-value=0.018) and the value of PR=6,66 this means that students who do not take Fe supplements have a 6,66 times greater risk of developing anemia than students who take Fe supplements. The behavior of consuming Fe tablets which is not good can not meet the needs of Fe in a body that is deficient in Fe so that Hb levels in the blood are not normal and anemia occurs in students. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the awareness of young women about the importance of consuming Fe tablets regularly to prevent anemia.

Abstract

Brigade Kupang Sehat (BKS) is a program of the Kupang City Health Office specifically providing emergency services to all residents of Kupang City for free for 24 hours. The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of BKS policy in reducing maternal and child mortality in Kupang City. The method used in this research was qualitative. Data were collected by interview. Four informants were selected by applying purposive sampling technique. The results showed that BKS has an emergency program to help reduce maternal and child mortality. BKS provided medical equipment, transportation/ambulance equipped with a midwife kit, response time, pregnancy check-ups, and postpartum services including family planning services after giving birth, collaboration with public health center and hospitals for referral process, and socialization about the function and role of BKS. Obstacles experienced by BKS included economic factors and a lack of knowledge in pregnant women in choosing a place of delivery. BKS also noted that pregnant women had a complete opening at home, had no pink books or MCH, refusal from pregnant women or families to be referred to better health facilities. The socialization of BKS is needed to increase the awareness of residents of its services, especially for those with low income.

Abstract

The first five years of a child's life are crucial since children's growth and development occur at a rapid pace throughout this time. If there is an imbalance in consumption, the height will be affected. Stunting in children under the age of five is usually caused by long-term malnutrition. The number of stunting of five-year-old children at Mangulewa Public Health Center (PHC) in 2019 amounted to 178 cases. In 2020, there were 171 cases, including 123 short and 48 very short children. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of stunting in West Golewa District in 2020. This study is quantitative with a case-control design. The population was all under five children in the work area of Mangulewa PHC. The sample consisted of 104 children divided into 52 sampel for both case and control groups. Simple random sampling was used to select the sample. The results showed that the level of maternal education, history of exclusive breastfeeding, history of infectious diseases, and consumption patterns, namely the type, amount, and frequency of eating. were found to be associated with the incidence of stunting. There was no link between birth distance and the occurrence of stunting. Stunting must be immediately handled as it has long and short-term consequences such as psychological development issues, slow body growth, decreased achievement, and learning ability. All of these factors will have an impact on the future of children under the age of five.

Abstract

Babies with Low Birth Weight (LBW) have a higher risk of impaired growth and development and even death than babies born with normal birth weight. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal age, parity, birth spacing, maternal disease during pregnancy, maternal nutritional status, and antenatal care with the incidence of LBW in the work area of Tarus Public Health Center, Kupang Regency. This research was quantitative using a case-control design. The population consisted of all babies born in November 2019 to May 2020. Case samples were 21 LBW infants and the control group had 21 normal birth weight infants. The statistical test used Chi-square with α=0.05. The results showed that maternal age, parity, maternal illness during pregnancy, maternal nutritional status, and antenatal care were related to the LBW incidence, while birth spacing was not associated with the incidence. Health workers need to continuously educate the community about preventing risky pregnancies, such as being too young (<20 years), too old (>35 years), and too many (parity>3), through the use of contraceptives, the nutritional needs of pregnant women, and routine pregnancy check-ups.

Abstract

A poor self-concept in homosexual men may increase the risk of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS. The purpose of the study was to describe the gay self-concept based on the aspects of knowledge, hope, and assessment. This research was qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The research informants were four gay men selected by using purposive sampling. The results showed that, based on the knowledge aspect, the informants acknowledged that homosexual behavior is a life choice influenced by genetic factors, environmental factors, and personal factors. The informants also admitted that they had been attracted to the same sex since childhood. Based on the aspect of hope, each informant has the hope of being accepted by the community while maintaining homosexual behavior, being able to marry the same sex, devoting himself to many people, especially homosexuals. Based on the assessment aspect, the informants feel proud and confident to be homosexual because they have unique talents that are different from heterosexual men. Suggestions related to this research are the need for socialization regarding the use of condoms, as well as the causes of homosexual behavior so that people do not isolate homosexuals but can guide and direct homosexuals to avoid deviant behavior such as always changing partners. In addition, it is necessary to check for sexually transmitted infections, especially in homosexual groups to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are health problems often experienced by workers due to several reasons, namely age, gender, body mass index, length of work, workload, work attitude and temperature. Hospital laundry workers are nonmedical staff in charge of washing dirty linens. As they use physical abilities, the workers have a high risk of musculoskeletal complaints. This study aimed to determine and analyze the risk of ergonomic MSDs in laundry workers at three public hospitals. This study was an analytic survey with a cross-sectional design. The study was located at hospital Prof. Dr. W. Z. Johannes, RST Wirasakti and RSB Titus Uly Kupang, and was conducted in January - August 2021. The population in this study was all laundry staff who worked in three hospitals. The sample of 33 people was taken using total sampling technique. The results showed that there was a relationship between age (p= 0.027), years of service (p= 0.001), workload (p= 0.002), work attitude (p= 0.001) and temperature (p= 0.001) with MSDs. Gender (p= 0.183) and body mass index (p= 0.282) were found unrelated to MSDs. The Hospital Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Management needs to be improved by providing occupational health promotion, ergonomic work attitude training for laundry workers and provision of adequate laundry facilities to minimize the occurrence of MSDs.
