Abstract

Speaking confidence remains a persistent challenge in EFL classrooms, as many students remain reluctant to communicate orally despite the growing demand for English communication skills in the twenty-first century. Students' fear of making mistakes and receiving negative evaluation often limits their participation in speaking activities, underscoring the need to examine the role of teacher feedback in shaping learners' confidence. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of teacher feedback styles and to explore students' perceptions of how feedback influences their speaking confidence. A qualitative comparative case study design was employed, involving two English teachers and students from Grade VII and Grade VIII at a junior high school. Data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major feedback types: corrective, epistemic, suggestive, and combined feedback. Corrective feedback was the most frequently used type overall, whereas supportive feedback practices were more evident in Grade VIII classrooms. Five themes describing students' speaking confidence also emerged: Anxiety-Driven Silence, Authoritative Feedback as Confidence Suppressant, Supportive Feedback as Confidence Catalyst, Recast and Epistemic Feedback as Preferred Intervention, and Teacher as Architect of Speaking Confidence. Students who received supportive feedback demonstrated greater willingness to communicate, more active participation, and higher confidence in speaking English. These findings imply that effective feedback should balance linguistic accuracy with emotional support to foster both speaking development and confidence. The study was limited to a single school context involving two teachers, which constrains the transferability of the findings to other educational settings.

Abstract

Research was motivated by low fourth-grade IPAS learning outcomes at SDN Sukolilo Barat 1, where the first-semester summative average was only 34% due to conventional methods and limited innovative materials. Conversely, needs analysis showed 85% of students prefer playful activities. This study aims to develop a valid, effective, and engaging role-playing-based student worksheet (LKPD) for fourth-grade IPAS on buying and selling activities. Using the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D model, data were collected via interviews, observations, questionnaires, and 10 pre-test and post-test essay questions. Product feasibility was validated by material, learning resources, and instructional design experts. Product trials involved 9 small-group and 15 large-group students using a one-group pre-test–post-test design, analyzed via Paired Sample T-test and Normalized Gain (N-Gain). The study successfully developed a role-playing-based LKPD on economic activities aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum. Through a learning-by-doing approach, this LKPD accommodates diverse learning characteristics (kinesthetic, visual, audio-visual) to improve cognitive outcomes and create interactive, meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

The low descriptive writing skills of elementary school students remain a significant challenge, as classroom instruction is often teacher-centered and lacks learning models and media that effectively stimulate students' idea development. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Think Pair Share cooperative learning model assisted by Flashcard media on the descriptive writing skills of fourth-grade students at SDN Cijeruk 02. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 56 fourth-grade students, divided into an experimental class and a control class, with 28 students in each group. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test, N-Gain analysis, and effect size with IBM SPSS Statistics 29. The results revealed a significant effect of the Think Pair Share cooperative learning model assisted by Flashcard media on students' descriptive writing skills, indicated by a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). The experimental group achieved an N-Gain score of 79.17%, categorized as effective, while the control group obtained an N-Gain score of 54%, categorized as less effective. Furthermore, the effect size was 0.9486, indicating a high level of practical effect. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the Think Pair Share cooperative learning model with Flashcard media to improve descriptive writing skills in elementary school students, providing a more effective instructional alternative than previous studies, which generally examined these two components separately. Therefore, the Think Pair Share cooperative learning model assisted by Flashcard media is proven to be effective in improving the descriptive writing skills of fourth-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

This study was motivated by students' low understanding and learning outcomes in the topic of the states of matter and their changes, which were attributed to teacher-centered instruction dominated by lecture methods and the limited use of technology-based interactive learning media. As a result, students tended to be less actively engaged and easily became bored during the learning process. This study aimed to develop Superzat, an application-based interactive multimedia learning medium that is valid, effective, and practical. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The development process included: (1) analysis of learning outcomes, student characteristics, and learning media needs; (2) design of the multimedia product; (3) development of the product followed by expert validation and empirical validation of the test instruments. The validation results showed scores of 81% from the media expert, 89% from the subject matter expert, 90% from the instructional design expert, and 93% from the language expert, indicating that the product was highly feasible. During the implementation stage, the multimedia was evaluated for its effectiveness and practicality. The results showed that teacher activity reached 100%, while student activity reached 95.87%. In addition, the Superzat interactive multimedia was categorized as highly practical, with teacher and student response rates of 96.25% and 93.33%, respectively. The improvement in students' learning outcomes was demonstrated by an average N-Gain score of 87%, which falls into the high category. Therefore, the Superzat application-based interactive multimedia is considered suitable for use as an elementary science (IPAS) learning medium for teaching the topic of the states of matter and their changes.
