Abstract

A major issue in conventional counseling is its limitation in integrating a deep spiritual dimension. This approach often focuses solely on psychological and emotional aspects, thus failing to fully help clients understand and restore themselves in their relationship with God, others, and themselves. To address this challenge, this research explores pastoral counseling as an approach that offers uniqueness through the integration of theological and spiritual principles. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method, emphasizing content analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic under investigation. This research finds that pastoral counseling is unique compared to general counseling due to the presence of a narrative trilogy consisting of God, counselor, and client, which must be present in the counseling process for it to be more effective. In pastoral counseling, the counselor and client are placed in an equal relationship involving the presence of God through His Spirit in honest and open conversation. This process consists of three stages: preparation, conversation, and evaluation-solution, which are built through the narratives of God, counselor, and client. With the principles of God's Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, as well as the care and love of the counselor, the counseling atmosphere becomes alive and helps clients to know themselves, others, and God correctly. This pastoral counseling allows clients to narrate their lives honestly, thus having the opportunity to experience holistic recovery.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relevance of the concept of God in Western philosophy by Aristotle with the local concept of God among the people of North Nusa, known as Genggonalangi. According to Aristotle, Theos or God is the Unmoved Mover, the source of all motion in the universe. This concept aligns with the understanding of Genggonalangi as the supreme supernatural power. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method through literature review and interviews. The findings reveal parallels between Theos and Genggonalangi: (1) awareness of a mysterious sacred power rooted in thought, (2) God as a Pure Act without material form, (3) God as the Supreme Ruler, and (4) spiritual power as the foundation of human life. This study opens opportunities for further research on integrating local spiritual values with Christian teachings within the cultural context of North Nusa.

Abstract

The discourse on the sovereignty of God is always a profound topic in Christian theology. It demonstrates that God's sovereignty shows supreme authority and power over all creation, including human life. In the Book of Job, there are two theological views: first, the orthodox retributive theology view where God is depicted as a figure who acts in relation to human actions, that suffering can occur because humans oppose God. Second, is the theodicy theological view, a belief that God has ordained everything so that human efforts and actions do not make a difference or impact in the history of life. The contradictory modern view sees that God allows suffering because of sin and actions, not as a purity of faith to be closer to God. This research aims to provide a deeper theological understanding of God's sovereignty and its relationship to the suffering of believers. Thus helping believers strengthen their faith in the midst of suffering. This research uses a qualitative method with a theological-hermeneutical analysis approach. As a result, this research can be a source of valuable inspiration and teaching and help believers understand and respond to suffering in light of sovereignty. God's sovereignty affirms that God's sovereignty encompasses His power and authority over all creation, including the suffering experienced by humans. Job is a concrete example of fortitude and faith in the midst of suffering.

Abstract

This study analyzes the ecological values embodied in stilt houses and proposes a model of ecological ecclesiology within the context of Banjarmasin City. A qualitative method was employed, using interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The findings reveal that stilt house construction in Banjarmasin reflects harmony between humans and nature, with architectural designs adapted to floods and tidal shifts. These houses also help preserve local wisdom, minimize environmental impact, and strengthen social and spiritual interactions. Such values may serve as a model for the church in carrying out its ecological mission, enabling it to contribute to environmental sustainability while fulfilling its spiritual and social calling.

Abstract

In the postmodern era, views on the Bible are challenged by changes in cultural paradigms, philosophy, and the way people think. Traditionally, the Bible, which is considered an authoritative and absolute source, is often questioned or reinterpreted based on the framework of individual subjectivity. Postmodernism shifts the focus from objective understanding to personal and subjective interpretation. Postmodernists see the Bible as a cultural narrative that is open to various interpretations, without recognizing a single truth. A more narrative and relational approach, as well as recognition of plurality of views, can be used to reach individuals who feel alienated by an overly dogmatic approach. The method used in this study is qualitative research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the study show that the views of postmodernists are wrong because they are built on the principles of subjectivism, pluralism, relativism and skepticism. The Bible in the postmodern world requires an adaptive approach but still adheres to solid theological principles. The church and Christian communities must continue to explore creative ways to explain the relevance of the Bible as the living word of God in a changing culture.

Abstract

This research examines the pastoral strategy of the Diocese of Ruteng Church in responding to the rise of patronage politics in the Manggarai region post-reformation. Using a public theology approach, the objective of this research is to analyze how the Church voices ethical and faith-based values amidst a corrupt local political context. Through a qualitative literature review method that examines official Church documents such as pastoral letters and synod documents, it was found that the Church's involvement has thus far been more educational-moral in nature. This strategy is realized through practical efforts such as public animation to cultivate a culture of shame and honesty, the radicalization of ethical attitudes through education and anti-money politics campaigns, and urging democratic institutions to operate fairly. Although this effort is an important public contribution, the research concludes that this approach has not yet effectively addressed the structural roots of patronage politics. Therefore, it is recommended that the Church deepens its involvement by integrating its moral and spiritual approach with more focused structural advocacy and cross-sectoral collaboration to realize a more holistic social change and a dignified democracy.

Abstract

This article explores the relationship between secular law and religious morality within Indonesia’s legal system, which is built upon a symbiotic principle between the state and religion. Unlike strictly secular or theocratic states, Indonesia adopts a unique approach by integrating religious values into its legal framework through the ideological foundation of Pancasila and the constitutional mandate of the 1945 Constitution. This study employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, focusing on Scopus-indexed publications and analyzed through content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that while Indonesia’s legal system normatively guarantees religious freedom, in practice, it still encounters challenges such as intolerance, the politicization of religion, discrimination against minority groups, and conflict among coexisting legal systems. The article concludes that the relationship between the state and religion in Indonesia requires structural and cultural reinforcement to achieve substantive justice and uphold the protection of diversity in a democratic society. This study contributes conceptually to the discourse on law and religion and offers practical implications for Christian education and the development of tolerant, justice-oriented citizens

Abstract

The first seed of the gospel sown by missionaries became the basis for establishing the celebration of the day of the proclamation of the gospel. This foundation is crucial for building the faith and spirit of gospel proclamation from generation to generation. A problem arises from the discrepancy between the age of the church as an institution and the age of the gospel proclamation day, which is celebrated annually in North Nusa, particularly on Siau Island. This has led to the misconception that the church as an institution was formed before the seeds of the gospel were sown. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, involving the collection of data and engagement with primary sources such as books, journal articles, and other relevant references related to the main topic of the research. The study concludes by tracing the historical path of the first gospel seeds in Siau. The findings indicate that the first seeds of the Gospel were sown by Pastor Mascarenhas in 1568 in the village of Paseng-Siau, which, by the most recent celebration in 2024, had reached an age of 456 years. Meanwhile, the age of Gospel proclamation that is commemorated annually, calculated from 1857 to 2024, spans 167 years. This period is categorized as a time of nurturing the Gospel seeds and enforcing strict church discipline. This long journey has made a significant contribution to establishing the historical foundation of Gospel ministry in the North Nusa region.
