Abstract

Abstract

Reading is a foundational skill in secondary English language education, essential for academic achievement and preparing learners for global contexts. Explicit instruction in reading strategies is particularly beneficial for students with limited academic English exposure. This study examines the integration of the KWL (Know, Want to know, Learned) strategy with the digital platform Wordwall, an approach designed to improve reading comprehension for junior high school students. The KWL framework enhances comprehension, focus, and engagement by activating prior knowledge, setting clear reading purposes, and encouraging reflective learning. A mixed-methods research design was employed to evaluate this intervention. The combination of structured metacognitive guidance and interactive digital activities transformed classroom instruction. Results indicated significant improvements in reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, the approach increased student motivation and established a low-anxiety environment that encouraged participation and risk-taking. The experimental group achieved a substantially higher and more consistent mean learning gain (31.05%) compared to the control group (10.73%). Their results also exhibited greater statistical stability and a distribution closer to normality, indicating that the benefits were both reliable and equitable across participants. These findings confirm that strategically combining evidence-based reading strategies with digital tools fosters a more engaging, effective, and inclusive learning environment. This pedagogical integration ultimately leads to deepened comprehension and strengthened academic outcomes, highlighting its significant potential for contemporary English language education

Abstract

The extensive utilization of social media in educational settings has heightened academic interest in its instructional potential, especially within the domain of English as a foreign Language (EFL). TikTok has garnered attention for its short form video format, which is thought to offer genuine language input and captivating listening exposure. Nevertheless, current research frequently highlights favorable results without adequate critical assesment. This study seeks to investigate the conditional efficacy of TikTok in enhancing EFL students listening abilities, while also analyzing learners perspective and the problems they face. A sequintal explanatory mixed-methods design was utilized. Quantitative data were collected via questionnaires administered to 57 undergraduate EFL students to ascertain broad trends in perceptions and experiences. To augment these findings, qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with a select group of participants, facilitating a more profound examination of individual perspectives. The data were examined utilizing descriptive statistic and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students predominantly possess fairly favorable views of TikTok, especially regarding exposure to diverse English dialects, enhanced learning motivation, and adaptable access to auditory resources. Nevertheless, other questionnaire items exhibited indifferent replies, signifying that students learning experiences were not consistenly favorable.

Abstract

Amidst the rapid growth of digital literacy, subsistence UMKM are a low-income group, particularly female heads of households who are the backbone of their families, facing the dual challenges of limited access to resources and digital literacy gaps. The government plays an active role in community empowerment programs through training in general business development. Therefore, community empowerment through digital-based entrepreneurship education addresses these challenges by opening mindsets, connecting ideas, skills, and market access through digital technology, and promoting cross-sector collaboration in a mutually reinforcing ecosystem. This study aims to determine the role of digital-based entrepreneurship education in the success of such community empowerment programs. This research collaborates with the Women's Empowerment Agency (DP2PA) in collaboration with the Indonesian Creative Women's Community and academics from the UMKM Entrepreneurship Institute of Widya Gama Mahakam University in Samarinda in an empowerment program through non-formal entrepreneurship education at women's business schools. This research is a qualitative descriptive study, with data obtained through interviews and observations, using instruments in the form of interview guides and observation guides. There were 15 participants consisting of organizers, mentors, facilitators, and business school participants. The data analysis process was applied inductively by referring to Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which includes five stages, namely data collection, data presentation, data reduction, conclusion drawing, and verification. The results of the study show that the success of the empowerment program requires the role of entrepreneurship education in encouraging an entrepreneurial attitude, the ability to identify and create business opportunities, and the ability to integrate digital technical skills and strengthen the entrepreneurial mindset. In practical terms, this study concludes that amid digital disruption, digital-based entrepreneurship education, mentoring, and community become the main catalysts for the transition of subsistence UMKM to sustainable businesses

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the professional competence of volunteer teachers who provide free Quran recitation lessons in increasing the interest in learning among out-of-school children at Rumah Tahsin Ar-Rahman, Samarinda City. This tahsin house is a community self-help initiative of the Cahaya Kreatif Sinergi Foundation and the Samarinda City Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (DP2PA) to facilitate non-formal religious education for socially vulnerable groups in order to respond to the social problem of assisting school dropouts due to family economic constraints. Although the teachers are volunteers without formal teaching backgrounds or teaching certifications, they are required to have adaptive pedagogical strategies. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with foundation administrators, volunteer teachers, and students (focusing on school dropouts), as well as documentation. Data analysis applied the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that the professional competence of volunteer Quran teachers played an important role in increasing the interest in learning the Quran among school dropouts, as seen from the volunteers' ability to apply professional competencies in practice. These competencies are dominated by strengths in the affective-motivational dimension (sincerity, motivation, and emotional regulation), which are supported by the cognitive dimension (mastery of tajwid material), the pedagogical dimension (varied and interactive methods), and the interpersonal dimension (empathic communication), thereby increasing the interest in learning among school dropouts, as indicated by improved focus (attention), understanding of religious values (relevance), self-confidence (confidence), and enthusiasm for learning (satisfaction). This study provides empirical evidence that in the non-formal religious education ecosystem, the absence of certification and academic qualifications in teaching can be effectively bridged by high affective-motivational competence and a humanistic approach by educators.

Abstract

Critical reading is a core academic competence for International Relations students who regularly engage with global news texts. Such texts frequently embed ideological framing, selective evidence, and political agendas that require analytical interpretation. This study examines students’ self-perceived critical reading competence after instruction using the Global News Analysis Model (GNAM). It also explores students’ perceptions of GNAM’s effectiveness and identifies instructional components perceived as most influential. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with 72 International Relations students who completed GNAM-based learning activities. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Reliability analysis showed strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.88). Results indicate moderate to high perceived critical reading competence, with the strongest confidence in identifying main claims (M = 4.12, SD = 0.54) and the weakest in detecting media bias and framing (M = 3.31, SD = 0.73). GNAM was perceived as effective overall (M = 4.07, SD = 0.45), particularly in comparative media analysis (M = 4.26, SD = 0.49). The findings suggest that GNAM supports students’ analytical awareness of global news, although deeper ideological evaluation remains challenging.

Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education in Indonesia has grown in importance as a result of the global demand for English competence. Reading comprehension in junior high school is an important part of language development and academic accomplishment. This qualitative case study looks into the use of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in reading instruction at a public junior high school in Karawang, Indonesia. The study investigates how GBA helps students grasp different text genres and how teachers adjust this technique to meet classroom demands. Data were gathered through classroom observations in a Grade VII English class, as well as semi-structured interviews with one English teacher. Thematic analysis was performed to discover repeating patterns and contextual elements that affect GBA implementation. Findings show that teachers possess a solid understanding of GBA stages and apply them using curriculum-aligned materials such as English for Nusantara text book. The approach enhances students’ comprehension of text structure, communicative purpose, and critical thinking. However, challenges remain, including limited instructional time, varied student proficiency, and appropriate text selection.

Abstract

Language plays a central role in political communication, particularly through the use of metaphor, which enables leaders to simplify complex issues and influence public perception. In the digital era, cinematic metaphors drawn from popular films and television series have become increasingly visible in political discourse. This study examines cinematic metaphors in two of President Joko Widodo’s international speeches delivered in 2018. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the analysis applies Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Critical Metaphor Analysis to identify and interpret metaphors derived from Avengers: Infinity War and Game of Thrones. Fourteen cinematic metaphors were identified and categorized into four conceptual mappings: ECONOMIC CONFLICT IS WAR, LEADERS ARE HEROES, ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY IS NATURAL DISASTER, and INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ARE A GAME OF POWER. The findings show that these metaphors function not only as linguistic devices but also as rhetorical strategies that construct meaning, highlight global risks, and legitimize Jokowi’s call for cooperation. The study concludes that cinematic metaphors enhance accessibility and emotional resonance in political messaging by connecting global issues with familiar cultural narratives. The originality of this research lies in its focus on cinematic metaphors in Indonesian political speech—an area rarely examined in prior studies—and its integration of cognitive and rhetorical perspectives to explain how popular culture shapes contemporary political discourse.
