Abstract

Environmental literacy is a crucial aspect that must be instilled from an early age to shape a generation that cares about environmental sustainability and health. This community engagement program aims to enhance environmental literacy among elementary school students through the implementation of a living pharmacy (apotek hidup) initiative. The activity was conducted at SDN 1 Kabar, East Lombok Regency, involving 48 students from grades IV and V as participants. A participatory approach was employed, emphasizing hands-on practice through stages of education, planting, and maintaining medicinal plants within the school environment. The evaluation results showed significant improvements in three indicators of environmental literacy. Knowledge of medicinal plants increased from 46% in the pretest to 82% in the posttest; skills in planting and plant care rose from 40% to 75%; and environmental awareness improved from 50% to 68%. This program not only provided contextual, experience-based learning but also fostered early ecological and health awareness. The living pharmacy proved to be an effective, engaging, and relevant educational medium for developing environmental literacy in elementary schools.

Abstract

The lack of innovation and standardization in Serbato Ice Cream presents a major challenge to product development and market competitiveness. This community engagement program aimed to enhance product value through recipe modification, new variant creation, product standardization, and packaging redesign. The innovation included replacing the red coloring from serbat water with the natural blue pigment of butterfly pea flowers, adjusting the recipe for a smoother texture, and conducting tests on fat, protein, and microbiological content. Repackaging involved adding nutritional information, halal certification, and expiration dates. The results revealed that Bulato Ice Cream contained higher protein (12.45%) than Serbato Ice Cream (2.70%), while Serbato Ice Cream had a higher fat content (2.70%) than Bulato (2.34%). Microbiological analysis confirmed both products were free of bacterial contamination. Sensory tests showed that Bulato Ice Cream was preferred for its color, sweetness, and flavor, while Serbato Ice Cream was favored for its aroma and texture. These innovations not only improved product quality and safety but also contributed economically to HIMDIKIM through the commercialization of attractive, standardized local ice cream products

Abstract

Rengginang micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Tetebatu Village, Sikur District, East Lombok, have significant potential for development but face challenges in brand management and the utilization of digital technology for marketing. This community service program aimed to strengthen the competitiveness of MSME actors through branding innovation and digital marketing. The activities were conducted in three stages: training on packaging design and brand identity, mentoring in creating digital promotional content, and implementing social media–based marketing strategies. A participatory approach was applied by involving 15 MSME actors from three hamlets: Lingkung Leuk, Lingkung Tengak, and Kembang Sri Leuk. Quantitative results based on pre-test and post-test evaluations showed significant improvements in competencies: the first group increased from 40% to 70%, the second group from 60% to 85%, and the third group from 45% to 80%. On average, branding knowledge improved by 25 percentage points, and social media marketing skills increased proportionally. Furthermore, 80% of participants successfully produced new packaging designs that met modern market standards, and 73% began marketing their products through digital platforms within two weeks after the training. These findings indicate that practice-based collaborative training integrating branding innovation and digital marketing is effective in strengthening MSME capacity to compete in broader markets. In the future, similar programs are recommended to expand to other villages and include business financial management to support sustainability.

Abstract

In the context of education in Indonesia, fostering love and pride for local culture is crucial. Our country has a vast cultural diversity that, if not preserved and introduced from an early age, could be lost to the tides of modernization. Therefore, the role of teachers as strategic agents in the educational process must be encouraged to adopt more innovative approaches in teaching. This community service aims to equip teachers with the skills to create e-modules that integrate local cultural values as part of the learning process. The activities were conducted in May 2025, involving 14 teachers from SMA Negeri 11 Halmahera Selatan. The training procedure included planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. Evaluation results showed a significant improvement in teachers' understanding of local culture and technical skills, reflected in the average pretest and posttest scores, which increased from 61.4% to 90% for cultural understanding and from 58.6% to 80.3% for digital application skills. The resulting e-modules were able to present material aligned with regional characteristics, facilitating more engaging and interactive learning. This training outcome is expected to support the improvement of learning quality through culturally relevant digital media while strengthening the preservation of local culture within education. Integrating local culture into e-modules is also expected to enhance students' learning interest and critical thinking regarding cultural values.

Abstract

Pliken Village, located in Kembaran District, Banyumas Regency, is recognized as one of the largest tempe production centers in Indonesia. However, most production activities are still conducted using traditional methods, resulting in uncontrolled fermentation processes, inconsistent product quality, limited shelf life, and weak institutional management. This community service program aimed to enhance partner capacity through the implementation of smart farming and smart packaging technologies to strengthen the institutional structure of the Pliken Tempe Production Center. The program employed a participatory approach involving socialization, training, mentoring, and the application of Internet of Things (IoT)-based technology. Smart farming technology was applied to the fermentation chamber to automatically control temperature and humidity, while smart packaging was introduced to improve packaging quality and product identity. Program evaluation was conducted through field observation and pre-test and post-test assessments. The results indicated a significant increase in participants’ knowledge, with average scores rising from 56.3 to 84.7. The smart farming system successfully maintained fermentation temperature at 30–35°C and relative humidity at approximately 70%, resulting in more consistent tempe quality and extending product shelf life to approximately 10–12 days. In addition to technical improvements, the program strengthened institutional capacity through the implementation of simple business record-keeping, improvement of business legality, and enhanced managerial readiness of partners. The integration of smart farming, smart packaging, and institutional strengthening proved effective in improving the competitiveness and sustainability of tempe-based MSMEs and shows strong potential for replication in other tempe production centers with similar characteristics

Abstract

Tourism service quality is strongly shaped by communication quality; therefore, foreign-language competence—including Japanese—has become increasingly relevant for tourism students. This community service program aimed to strengthen basic Japanese skills among Tourism students at Universitas Hamzanwadi through an industry-partnership mentoring model with PT Ina Nippon Indonesia. The six-month program (July–December) involved 23 participants (third semester, fifth semester, and alumni) and focused on three foundational literacy components delivered sequentially: Hiragana (July–August), Katakana (September–October), and Kanji (November–December). Learning activities combined structured drills, group discussions, and service-dialog simulations, supported by periodic assessments through written tests and Japanese-led interviews (every three months). Quantitative results from average scores show consistent improvement across all components: Hiragana increased from 49 to 76 (+27 points), Katakana from 50 to 81 (+31 points), and Kanji from 48 to 79 (+31 points). These gains suggest that scheduled, intensive mentoring aligned with tourism-service communication needs is effective in building basic Japanese literacy and supporting students’ functional communication readiness. Future implementation should strengthen the assessment system using detailed scoring rubrics and individual score documentation to provide more robust evidence of program impact and sustainability.

Abstract

Plastic bottle waste is a persistent problem in Kampung Pueh Sematan, Kuching, Sarawak, where limited waste services and low environmental literacy often lead to open dumping or burning. This community service program aimed to improve residents’ understanding of plastic waste impacts and develop practical upcycling skills to transform used bottles into functional, value-added handicrafts. The program was conducted on 9 August 2025 at Surau Baitul Quddus through collaboration between Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak and I-CATS University College, involving 63 participants (10 local residents; 25 from I-CATS; 28 from Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak). Using a participatory empowerment approach, activities followed three stages: (1) awareness and socialization on environmental and health risks of unmanaged plastic waste, (2) hands-on training on sorting, cleaning, cutting, assembling, and decorating bottles, and (3) evaluation using a structured questionnaire. Participants produced items such as decorative lamps, storage containers, and reusable accessories. Questionnaire results were strongly positive: 100% reported no prior similar training; material clarity was rated 50% strongly agree and 50% agree; confidence to apply skills independently reached 33% strongly agree and 64% agree; perceived benefits were 100% (50% strongly agree; 50% agree); overall satisfaction was 42% strongly agree and 58% agree; and facility adequacy was 16% strongly agree and 84% agree. Overall, the program indicates that combining contextual environmental education with hands-on practice can support community readiness for sustainable plastic bottle upcycling and small-scale creative economic potential
