Abstract

In Indonesia, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) learning has become crucial in enhancing English proficiency, particularly for English language teachers across various regions. Proficiency in the English language serves as a key factor in meeting educational quality standards. Therefore, TOEFL training has become a necessary endeavor to support teachers' English language mastery and elevate the quality of instruction in the pursuit of standardized schools. This community engagement aims to provide TOEFL training as an effort to enhance English language proficiency among English teachers in Kabupaten Muara Enim, South Sumatra. The training was conducted online via the Zoom Conference application, with a total of 77 teacher participants. The training curriculum encompassed fundamental TOEFL skills, including Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading. The training process involved several stages, including pre-test assessments, presentations, discussions, mentoring, and post-test evaluations. The results of the training demonstrated a noticeable improvement in TOEFL scores among the teachers. The average initial TOEFL score was 426, with the lowest score at 286 and the highest at 536. After the training, the average final TOEFL score increased to 432, with the lowest score at 296 and the highest at 557. Although the score changes were not statistically significant, they indicate an enhancement in the understanding and English language proficiency of the participants. The training proved effective in elevating English language comprehension among English teachers in Kabupaten Muara Enim. The effective delivery of training materials and interactions with resource persons positively contributed to the teachers' English language proficiency. It is recommended to conduct follow-up activities to assess the application of acquired knowledge after the training. Such initiatives are expected to further enhance the positive impact of the training on the teachers' pedagogical practices. Moreover, similar training activities could be extended to a provincial level, involving a larger number of teachers, thus fostering improvements in the education sector within the region.

Abstract

Information Systems (IS) have become an essential tool in supporting management and services at the community level. In the context of RW 06, Kelurahan Air Putih, Pekanbaru, Riau, the need for an efficient and effective system has become increasingly urgent. Therefore, through the Real Work Lecture Program (KKN) UMRI Smart, we have adopted and adapted OpenSID to meet the needs of RW 06, especially RT 01 to RT 06. The primary objective of this adaptation was to modernize administration and enhance information services for residents. By integrating technology and a participatory approach, we aim to create a more informed and connected environment. The adjustments made were not only technical but also pertaining to the content and the manner of presenting information, thus making it relevant to the context of the RW and RT in Kelurahan Air Putih. The results of the activities indicate that OpenSID has successfully increased administrative efficiency in RW 06 by facilitating access to information and population data management. The conducted training sessions effectively enhanced users' understanding and skills in system operations. The survey conducted among 6 RTs showed a positive response, with an average of 60% of respondents feeling at ease interacting with the system interface. In contrast, only about 16.67% did not share this sentiment, and 23.33% were neutral. In particular, the majority of respondents considered the training materials helpful, with a high level of satisfaction regarding the system's performance and functions. Nonetheless, there were several challenges, such as user adaptation to new technology, as seen from the percentage feeling 'Moderate' in certain aspects, and the need for additional feature development to increase user convenience. This activity provides insights into the benefits and challenges of implementing OpenSID at the RW level and highlights the importance of ongoing training and support for the success of digital transformation in local communities.

Abstract

Teaching materials based on Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) are educational resources that provide information on cross-cultural understanding, presenting reading texts complemented with questions and learning activities focused on the cultural contrasts between Indonesia and foreign countries. The innovation of teaching materials for pedagogical purposes is crucial in the learning process. Hence, this activity aims to assist high school English teachers in Lubuklinggau through a Cross Cultural Understanding approach, enabling them to develop effective teaching materials. This initiative highlights the importance of cultural understanding in English language teaching, with an emphasis on contrasting local and target cultures. Involving 40 teachers from 23 schools, the training included presentations on cultural integration, the CCU concept, examples of CCU-based teaching materials, and the creation of questions oriented towards High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The results indicate that the training significantly enhanced the teachers' understanding and skills in integrating cultural aspects into English language teaching materials, as well as their awareness of the importance of cross-cultural sensitivity. This is reflected in the high satisfaction rates, with 87.5% of the participants affirming that the training content met their needs and 90% feeling they had directly benefited. This study underscores the significance of CCU training in professional development for teachers and highlights the necessity for more inclusive and culturally sensitive educational approaches in both global and local contexts

Abstract

Hydroponic farming has emerged as an effective alternative to overcome land limitations, especially in urban and compact residential areas. Focusing on two Madrasah Aliyah in East Lombok, the Community Service Program by the Biology Education Department of Universitas Hamzanwadi implemented hydroponic techniques as an innovative farming method. This initiative aimed to enhance environmental awareness and farming skills among students, while utilizing styrofoam waste as a planting medium. The process included socialization, seedling production, planting, maintenance, and harvesting, using plants such as water spinach, lettuce, and spinach. The implementation method incorporated Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), enabling active participation from students and teachers. The program was conducted from March to November 2023 at MA NWDI Juet and MA Ridlol Walidain NW Batu Bangka - Jenggik. The mentoring process involved various stages, from introducing hydroponic techniques to creating planting media and planting, including the use of AB Mix nutrients and rockwool as planting media. The results of the activity showed successful cultivation of hydroponic water spinach, while lettuce and spinach experienced crop failure. The primary causes of this failure were inadequate care, light, and temperature. Nevertheless, the activity successfully educated students on the importance of hydroponic agriculture and creative waste utilization, providing new insights into urban farming. In conclusion, the hydroponic approach can be an efficient solution for cultivating plants in limited spaces, offering educational and environmental benefits. This program also highlighted the potential of styrofoam waste as a hydroponic planting medium, underscoring the importance of waste utilization for environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Statistical data analysis is the process of examining, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data with the aim of discovering useful information, drawing conclusions, and supporting decision-making. This process involves various statistical techniques and methods applied to data to understand, explain, and predict phenomena. Skills like these are greatly needed by students. Therefore, training in the use of the open-source statistical application JASP is necessary to enhance the statistical data analysis capabilities of UIN Mataram students, especially those in their final semester. This community service activity aims to introduce and train the use of JASP as a free and license-free alternative for statistical data analysis, considering the limitations of accessibility and ethical issues surrounding the use of paid software like SPSS in academic environments. The training methodology includes theoretical sessions and practical application of JASP, focusing on multiple linear regression analysis and path analysis. An initial survey showed that only 25% of final-semester students were familiar with open-source applications like JASP. After the training, there was a significant increase in understanding and application of JASP, with 85% of participants showing improved competence. These results demonstrate the importance of training in open-source statistical applications to support student academic research and strengthen academic integrity within the Islamic university environment. This study provides insights into ethical and affordable statistical software alternatives and highlights the importance of analytical skills in higher education.

Abstract

Stunting remains an unresolved issue in North Lombok, NTB, Indonesia. One of the government's efforts to reduce stunting rates involves ensuring nutritional fulfillment for mothers and expectant mothers, which can be obtained from local food sources. Nira (palm sap) and Trigona honey are local commodities available in Tanjung, North Lombok. Unfortunately, these commodities have not been optimally utilized for nutritional fulfillment or as income sources. Typically, Nira is only sold as fresh sap, fermented beverage (tuak), or palm sugar, which have relatively low market values. Combining Nira and Trigona honey to create high-value candy products represents an opportunity. This community service project aimed to improve welfare and nutrition in Sigar Penjalin Village by assisting in the production of hard candy from Trigona honey and Nira Aren as a potential local delicacy to combat stunting and enhance local income. The implementation involved 16 community members organized by UMKM Rangsot Kreatif. The training used ingredients like brown sugar, granulated sugar, glucose syrup, Trigona honey, and water. The training stages included preparation, material delivery, hands-on practice, and evaluation through pretests and posttests to measure participants' knowledge, skills, and interests. The pretest results showed a total score of 627 out of 960 (65.31%), indicating a moderate level of understanding. After the training, the posttest showed a significant improvement, with a total score of 829 out of 960 (86.35%), indicating a very high level of understanding. This activity highlights the importance of technological support and the utilization of local resources in developing nutritious and economical snack products, supporting improvements in community nutrition and economy, and providing alternative solutions in local product processing
