Abstract

This study examines how civil society organizations and social movements engage with governance processes to achieve equitable, sustainable, and democratic transformations in food systems. Using a comparative qualitative approach, the research investigates case studies from Canada, New Zealand, France, and the United States to analyze varying governance models, including multi-stakeholder governance, collaborative governance (co-governance), and polycentric or self-governance. Results demonstrate that civil society participation within multi-stakeholder frameworks can influence policy discourses but faces significant constraints from state and private sector actors. Collaborative governance arrangements show greater potential, allowing civil society to meaningfully co-produce food governance outcomes; however, such partnerships often require movements to make pragmatic compromises. Polycentric governance and self-governance models enable civil society actors to exercise greater autonomy, particularly benefiting Indigenous and local communities, although institutional recognition remains a critical challenge. Overall, this study contributes a nuanced understanding of how social movements strategically mobilize power to reshape food governance systems, highlighting opportunities, constraints, and conditions that influence their ability to advance transformative agendas towards sustainability, social justice, and democracy in food systems governance.

Abstract

The Jiwasraya case in Indonesia is one of the biggest financial scandals that reflects weaknesses in the implementation of regulatory compliance and internal control, especially related to fiduciary duty violations. This study aims to analyze effective risk mitigation strategies in strengthening regulatory compliance through a case study based on a literature review. By using a qualitative research method through a literature review approach, this study explores various relevant documents, reports, and previous studies. The results of the study indicate that the violation of fiduciary duty in Jiwasraya was caused by weaknesses in investment supervision, lack of transparency in financial reports, and neglect of good corporate governance principles. To address this, the proposed strategies include strengthening internal control mechanisms based on the COSO framework, implementing a whistleblowing system for early detection of violations, and integrating real-time investment monitoring technology. This study provides theoretical contributions by expanding the literature on mitigating the risk of fiduciary duty violations in the context of regulatory compliance. Practically, this study recommends strategic steps for insurance companies and regulators to prevent similar cases from recurring in the future

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of competency-based training and the work environment on the performance of non-medical administrative employees at a private hospital in Tangerang Regency, with a total population of 200. The performance of non-medical employees plays a crucial role in supporting the smooth operation of the hospital, thus requiring appropriate training and a conducive work environment. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey method. The sample consisted of 50 respondents, all non-medical administrative employees who had participated in training and worked for more than one year. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and the research instruments were tested for validity and reliability. The validity test results showed that all items in the competency-based training, work environment, and employee performance variables had correlations exceeding the r table (0.278), thus being declared valid. The reliability test using Cronbach's Alpha yielded values >0.60, thus declaring all instruments reliable. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that competency-based training had a positive and significant effect on employee performance (p = 0.010), as did the work environment (p = 0.000). A simultaneous test (F-test) showed that competency-based training and the work environment simultaneously had a positive and significant effect on employee performance with a significance level (p = 0.000). The study found that 43.8% of employee performance variables could be explained by competency-based training and the work environment, while the remaining 56.2% was explained by other variables not included in this study, such as work pressure and job satisfaction.

Abstract

This study assesses the influence of road transport infrastructure on tourism growth in Tanzania, focusing on Ruaha National Park. The main objectives were to assess the effects of road quality, accessibility, and networks on tourism growth. Adopting a positivist philosophy, a deductive approach, and a quantitative design, the research surveyed 353 tour operator companies, yielding 313 valid responses. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS. The findings indicate that road quality has a positive and statistically significant effect on tourism growth, demonstrating that improved road conditions enhance tourist access, satisfaction, and revenue generation. In contrast, road accessibility exhibited a negative but statistically insignificant relationship, implying that accessibility alone does not necessarily drive growth, possibly due to reliance on alternative transport modes and seasonal variations. However, road networks had a negative and statistically significant effect, suggesting that poorly integrated or misaligned networks can hinder tourist flows to Ruaha. Overall, the regression model was significant though it showed modest explanatory power. The study concludes that road quality is the most important determinant of tourism growth, while accessibility and networks require further contextual examination. Key recommendations include increased government investment in road maintenance and upgrading, stronger collaboration between Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and transport agencies to prioritize critical road sections, and greater involvement of tour operators in infrastructure feedback. It further calls for sustainable, strategically integrated road networks and future comparative research between northern and southern tourism circuits to inform balanced tourism policies.

Abstract

Smart technologies have revolutionized port operations making the port activities and processes more efficient. This study examined the influence of smart technology adoption on enhancing operational efficiency at the Dar es Salaam seaport, Tanzania's largest and busiest port. The research was guided by three specific objectives corresponding with smart technology selected components including system automation, real-time data integration, and cybersecurity on port efficiency. The study adopted positivism philosophy and deductive research approach with a descriptive design employed in entire process of methodology. The study collected data from a sample of 95 respondents drawn randomly from port management, shipping companies, and shipping agents. Data collection instruments included structured questionnaires and documentary reviews. Analysis was carried out through descriptive statistics and multiple regressions by using SPSS software. The results of descriptive statistics show that the aggregate average mean of all three variables lie in “agree level” of the liker scale indication that respondents agreed that adoption of smart technology through system automation, real-time data integration, and cybersecurity contributed to port efficiency. Findings of the study demonstrated that system automation had significant enhancement to port efficiency, with a strong positive correlation, indicating that increased automation leads to better operational outcomes. Real-time data integration showed a positive but statistically weaker impact on port efficiency, suggesting benefits that are present but less pronounced. Cybersecurity also demonstrated a significant positive effect on port efficiency, suggesting that increased usage of cybersecurity technology leads to better improved operational outcomes. The study concludes that smart technologies, especially automation and cybersecurity, play critical roles in improving the efficiency of Dar es Salaam seaport operations. The study recommends the port management to continue investing in these smart technologies in parallel with efforts to strengthen real-time data systems for optimal port efficiency. These findings may contribute valuable insights to the port authorities and the government focusing to leverage technology to enhance port operational efficiency.
