Abstract

This study examines how intellectual disability and structural injustice are constructed in Miracle in Cell No. 7, directed by Hanung Bramantyo. It aims to analyze the discursive construction of disability and the reproduction of structural discrimination within legal and social contexts. Using a qualitative research design with a critical discourse analysis approach, this study applies Critical Disability Theory to interpret selected dialogues and key scenes that reflect power relations and institutional practices within the narrative. The findings reveal that intellectual disability is constructed as deviance within legal discourse, leading to discursive marginalization and the denial of agency. Discrimination operates structurally through institutional mechanisms such as coercive interrogation, lack of accommodation, and biased legal procedures within the criminal justice system. At the social level, stigma and dominant cultural narratives construct disability as a marker of danger and incompetence, reinforcing exclusion and legitimizing injustice. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting how cinematic narratives reproduce institutionalized ableism across both legal and social domains. It contributes to Critical Disability Studies by emphasizing discrimination as a multidimensional and structurally embedded phenomenon shaped by power relations. Practically, the study underscores the need for disability-inclusive legal frameworks and increased social awareness to promote justice, equality, and dignity for persons with disabilities.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of pictures as instructional media for teaching English vocabulary to second-year students at MTs Ta’dib Al-Mu’allimin Al-Islamy. Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of language learning; however, many students face difficulties in understanding and retaining new words. Therefore, the use of visual media, particularly pictures, is considered an effective strategy to facilitate vocabulary acquisition. This research adopts a qualitative study design, aiming to provide an in-depth understanding of how picture-based instruction is implemented and how it influences students’ vocabulary learning. Data were collected through classroom observations, documentation, questionnaires, and vocabulary tests to obtain both descriptive and supportive quantitative evidence. The combination of these instruments allows for data triangulation to enhance the validity of the findings. The results indicate that the use of pictures significantly improves students’ vocabulary mastery and increases their engagement in the learning process. Visual media help students comprehend meanings more easily, retain vocabulary more effectively, and participate more actively in classroom activities. Furthermore, the results of the vocabulary tests show a noticeable improvement in students’ scores after the implementation of picture-based instruction, with the majority of students achieving scores above the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). Therefore, the use of pictures is an effective and engaging instructional medium for teaching vocabulary. It not only enhances students’ understanding and retention but also fosters active participation in the classroom. Therefore, teachers are strongly encouraged to integrate visual media into their teaching strategies to support students’ vocabulary development.

Abstract

Conjunctions are essential for organizing discourse and signaling relationships between ideas, yet second language learners often struggle to use them accurately in spoken English. Among these, “besides” is particularly challenging due to its nuanced semantic and pragmatic functions. This qualitative study adopts Conversation Analysis (CA) to investigate the use of “besides” by Chinese university students in advanced English group discussions. Drawing on 15.9 hours of recorded interactional data from five Chinese undergraduates, the study identifies non-target-like uses of “besides” in naturally occurring talk. Five error types are found: misuse as a simple listing connector, misuse as an afterthought marker, overuse to connect aligned ideas, overuse as a redundant connector, and underuse as a clarifying connector. These errors stem from the complexity of “besides”, negative transfer from native-language conjunctions, instructional emphasis on surface-level coherence, and limited systematic training in spoken and written academic English. The study highlights the importance of understanding connectives in both semantic and pragmatic contexts and suggests pedagogical strategies to improve learners’ accurate and contextually appropriate use of “besides” in spoken English.

Abstract

This research analyzes the syntactic structures of noun phrases found in the editorial section of The Jakarta Post newspaper. This study addresses the limited research on noun phrase structures in Indonesian English-language media. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study examines noun phrases in three editorials published from June 3 to 5, 2024. The analysis identifies eight types of noun phrase structures: Determiner + Noun, Adjective + Noun, Determiner + Adjective + Noun, Determiner + Quantifier + Noun, Determiner + Participle + Noun, Noun + Prepositional Phrase, Noun + Adjective Phrase, and Noun + Relative Clause. The findings reveal that the most frequently used structure is Adjective + Noun (24.7%), followed closely by Determiner + Noun (24.0%). These results indicate a strong tendency in journalistic writing to employ descriptive language while maintaining specificity and clarity. The study also reveals that noun phrases in The Jakarta Post serve multiple functions including subjects, objects, and complements, with complex structures such as Noun + Prepositional Phrase (16.9%) and Determiner + Adjective + Noun (17.5%) being used to provide additional context and nuanced information. This research contributes to understanding how English syntax functions in Indonesian media contexts and offers insights for linguistics educators, students, and media professionals regarding the practical application of noun phrase structures in journalistic writing.

Abstract

This study examines the characterization of Bella Swan as the protagonist in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) through Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist theory, particularly the concept of binary opposition. By focusing on narrative and symbolic contrasts, the analysis explores how meaning is constructed within the protagonist’s development. A qualitative descriptive method is applied through the analysis of selected scenes and dialogues from the film. The findings indicate that Bella Swan’s characterization is shaped by dominant binary oppositions, including love versus loss, courage versus fear, humanity versus the supernatural, and Edward versus Jacob. These oppositions position her as a structural protagonist who embodies emotional and ideological tensions within the narrative. She also functions as a mediating figure between conflicting value systems, reflecting the dynamic and relational nature of identity construction in cinematic texts. Unlike previous studies that emphasize romantic themes or surface-level character analysis, this research highlights the underlying structural system that actively constructs the protagonist’s identity. The findings contribute to literary and film studies by demonstrating how meaning in film can be systematically interpreted through Lévi-Straussian structuralism.

Abstract

This research analyzes the protagonist's struggle in pursuing work-life balance in Almira Bastari's novel Home Sweet Loan. Using a qualitative descriptive method with sociology of literature approach, the study explores how Kaluna, the protagonist, experiences multidimensional struggles to navigate between professional responsibilities and personal life. The analysis identifies three main struggles based on Jay Shetty's framework: internal struggle (emotional and psychological conflict), external struggle (social and economic pressures), and existential struggle (search for meaning and identity). Set in urban Jakarta, the novel reflects real challenges faced by middle-class working women, including unrealistic social expectations, limited income, and familial burdens. Kaluna's strategies, such as extreme frugality and disciplined budgeting, show her resilience in maintaining control over her life amid external demands. The findings reveal that work-life balance is not a stable condition but a continuous negotiation, often filled with sacrifice and emotional tension. The protagonist's journey provides a critical lens on the social structures that burden women with invisible labor and unacknowledged emotional exhaustion. This research contributes to literary studies by highlighting how contemporary Indonesian fiction mirrors socio-economic realities, especially those experienced by young women in urban settings.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed how individuals interact, make decisions, and engage with ethical issues, particularly within technology-driven environments. In educational settings, digital media has been widely utilized to support English language learning; however, its implementation has largely emphasized linguistic competence, often overlooking the development of students’ ethical awareness. Despite the growing integration of digital tools in English language teaching, their potential role in fostering ethical reasoning remains insufficiently explored, especially among students in computer-related disciplines. This gap underscores the need for a more integrative pedagogical approach that connects language acquisition with critical ethical reflection. This study aims to investigate how digital ethics is represented through the character Light Yagami in the anime Death Note and to examine its potential as a pedagogical resource in English language teaching. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study applies literary analysis, digital ethics frameworks, and principles of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The findings indicate that the character embodies central ethical issues such as power, justice, and responsibility, while illustrating how the misuse of authority can result in significant moral consequences. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that anime narratives can serve as an effective medium for engaging students with complex ethical dilemmas in technology-oriented contexts. The use of anime also provides meaningful and relatable contexts that enhance language comprehension and stimulate critical thinking. This study contributes to the intersection of digital ethics and ESP by positioning anime as an innovative pedagogical tool for promoting ethical engagement in English language learning.
