Abstract

This study investigates students’ attitudes and perceptions toward learning English at SMP Islam Al-Falah Kota Jambi. Attitude plays a crucial role in language acquisition, influencing students' engagement, motivation, and overall learning outcomes. The study examines three key aspects of students’ attitudes: behavioral, cognitive, and affective. Using a qualitative research approach with Yin’s case study method, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with second-grade students. Findings reveal that students generally hold a positive cognitive attitude toward learning English, recognizing its importance for future careers and global communication. Behaviorally, students demonstrate responsibility in completing tasks but show varying levels of motivation for independent learning. The affective aspect highlights enthusiasm for English learning but also identifies challenges related to speaking confidence and anxiety. The study suggests that fostering a supportive learning environment, integrating interactive methods, and encouraging speaking practice can enhance students’ attitudes and learning outcomes. This study elucidates the subtle aspects related to students' attitudes, so enhancing English language education through the provision of contextually pertinent teaching methodologies and fostering the advancement of more effective learner-centered strategies. Future research should explore motivational factors, teaching strategies, and the impact of digital resources on language learning.

Abstract

Social awareness and relationship skills, integral components of the social-emotional learning (SEL) framework, serve as fundamental objectives in holistic education. However, Indonesia’s SEL concept remains relatively new, particularly in higher education settings. This study examined how learning techniques such as jigsaw enabled the cultivation of social awareness and relationship skills depicted in the SEL framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method, this study explored students’ interactions in the jigsaw technique among 19 first-semester Master’s students in the English Education Master Program at Sanata Dharma University. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations, which offered a comprehensive understanding of students’ interactions through the jigsaw technique. The findings revealed the potential of jigsaw as a collaborative technique to promote social awareness and relationship skills among higher-education students by exposing students to diverse perspectives and building relationship skills through active communication and collaboration. However, several challenges, such as cultural and emotional barriers and a sense of dominance, inferiority, and trust, emerged in the group interactions that need to be addressed. This study is expected to contribute valuable insights at the higher level of education in Indonesia by applying various learning techniques, one of which is the jigsaw technique, as an effort to implement SEL and improve SEL competencies. The findings provide practical implications for educators and policymakers trying to promote a balance of emotional and social growth alongside students’ academic learning, especially concerning collaborative skills needed in today’s world.

Abstract

Classroom presentation is an essential aspect of EFL students' speaking skills, as it involves actively conveying and expressing ideas in front of an audience. However, this activity often causes anxiety that can hinder students' performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the various factors that might contribute to the anxiety experienced by EFL students during classroom presentations, as well as identify coping strategies that can help them address their anxiety and enhance their speaking skills. In this study, mixed methods were used by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to obtain a more in-depth understanding of students' anxiety and the efforts that can be carried out to reduce its impact on speaking performance. The results showed that most students experienced medium level of learning anxiety, while their speaking ability was quite good. However, the relationship between anxiety and presentation skills in English did not show a strong enough correlation. Qualitatively, anxiety affects cognitive impairment, fluency and cohesiveness in speaking, as well as students' confidence level. In addition, the results of this study also highlighted some effective strategies that can be implemented to effectively manage anxiety, such as applying breathing techniques, practicing regularly, and speaking at a slow tempo. Therefore, students are advised to make a more thorough preparation before making an English presentation in class to increase their confidence and speaking fluency.

Abstract

This study explored the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English teaching at SMP Sahabat Alam Palangka Raya, focusing on how concept character was integrated, the challenges faced by teachers, and the strategies used to overcome them. The curriculum emphasized student-centered learning, differentiated instruction, and contextual integration. Teachers used methods such as project-based learning, essential material focus, and flexible classroom practices to meet students’ diverse needs. However, the implementation process presented several challenges. These included varied student proficiency levels, limited access to teaching materials, difficulty integrating local content, lack of professional development, time constraints, and low student motivation. To investigate this process, a qualitative case study design was employed, involving classroom observations, in-depth interviews with English teachers, and analysis of teaching documents and student work samples. Findings revealed that teachers adopted various pedagogical approaches aligned with the curriculum, including project-based learning, flexible classroom practices, and an emphasis on essential material tailored to students’ diverse needs. However, several implementation challenges emerged, such as varying student proficiency levels, limited access to appropriate teaching materials, difficulty in integrating local cultural content, insufficient professional development opportunities, time constraints, and low student motivation.

Abstract

English language learning plays an important role in developing EFL students' competencies in the era of globalization, yet low student engagement remains a major challenge due to monotonous learning methods. This study aims to investigate how Game-Based Learning (GBL) enhances students' engagement as well as explore their experiences during the learning process. Using thematic analysis, the findings show that GBL encourages behavioural engagement through active participation, collaboration, and adherence to game rules; emotional engagement through fun, enthusiasm in group learning, and excitement during competition; and cognitive engagement through increased curiosity, use of strategies, and reflection on self-development. The implications of this study suggest that teachers need to integrate game elements that support peer teaching, emotional safety and strategic thinking - such as time-based group games or language puzzles - tailored to students' ability levels to create more inclusive, fun and meaningful learning.

Abstract

This study was focused on the challenges in implementing eclectic method faced by English instructors at one of the non-formal educations in Palangka Raya, namely Global Learning Center (GLC). The English instructors used eclectic methods to maximize the teaching and learning process in order to achieve the learning goals. The implementation of eclectic method is still new and there is no research about it yet in Palangka Raya. This study intended to investigate the challenges of implementing it in non-formal education. To obtain the objective, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design. The descriptive used to provide rich descriptive details of the challenges in implementing eclectic method. The data were collected through interview and documentation. The result data analysis was found four challenges when implementing the eclectic method, they were (1) managing the time, (2) students’ gap and diversity, (3) designing appropriate lesson plan using eclectic method, and (4) motivating the students to speak. Hopefully, this research can give an insight for teachers and other English course to know the challenges before implementing the eclectic method. They need to be well-prepared in combining several methods in each learning process with considering the allocation time, variation of student backgrounds, and the strategy to motivate the students. For the other researcher, this research is still widely open for those who want to investigate and examine deeply about eclectic method. Keywords: challenges, eclectic method, speaking

Abstract

Early language development is crucial for children’s cognitive and social growth. This study aims to investigate the relationship between parental linguistic stimulation, emotional support, and children’s speaking ability. The research involved 30 preschool and kindergarten children at KB-TK Amanah Qurani in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected using questionnaires completed by teachers and parents. Due to non-normal distribution in two variables, Spearman Rank Correlation was used for analysis. Results show significant positive correlations among all variables. Parental linguistic stimulation and emotional support are strongly correlated (? = 0.735, p < 0.001). Children’s speaking ability has a moderate positive correlation with linguistic stimulation (? = 0.573, p = 0.001) and a strong positive correlation with emotional support (? = 0.640, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that higher parental involvement in language and emotional development is associated with better speaking skills in early childhood. This study emphasizes the vital role of both cognitive and emotional support in language acquisition and recommends greater focus on parent-child interaction in early education programs.

Abstract

Lecturers in vocational education institutions exhibit unique characteristics in delivering instruction and supporting student learning, particularly in practical classes that emphasize real-world experiences and industry-related skills. This study explores students’ perceptions of lecturers' attitudes and their influence on student engagement in the Forestry Department of the State Agricultural Polytechnic of Kupang. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight students and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings reveal that key aspects of lecturers' attitudes influencing student engagement include enthusiasm in teaching, fairness in treatment, and supportive responses to students’ questions and mistakes. While no distinctive attitudes specific to vocational lecturers were identified, the study found that students in East Nusa Tenggara possess unique cultural and linguistic traits, which shape their perceptions of lecturers' attitudes. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing the pedagogical competencies of vocational lecturers to create a participatory, equitable, and contextually relevant learning environment, particularly in regions with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to explore the implementation of the Write-around strategy to improve students' descriptive writing skills in an Indonesian EFL classroom. Conducted over two cycles involving 32 seventh-grade students at Junior High School 29 Bandung, the study examined how collaborative writing activities affect students' writing performance and engagement. Data were collected through observations, pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, and field notes. Findings indicated a significant improvement in students’ writing scores, with the average increasing from 59.6 to 75.9. Students demonstrated better control of grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics, as well as improved confidence and understanding of text structure. Questionnaire results revealed that most students found writing more enjoyable and less intimidating when working with peers. The Write-around strategy encouraged active participation, peer feedback, and the co-construction of ideas, aligning with previous research that highlights the benefits of cooperative learning. Despite minor challenges in idea sequencing during group writing, the strategy proved to be an effective method for supporting both cognitive and affective aspects of language learning. It is recommended that teachers adopt collaborative strategies like Write-around to foster a more interactive and supportive environment for developing writing skills in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study explores how pre-service teachers perceive the use of Kahoot! during their teaching internships, especially in English language classrooms. As digital tools become more common in education, Kahoot! stands out for making lessons more interactive and enjoyable. Through a survey of 180 education students, this research looks at how Kahoot! supports engagement, ease of use, and effectiveness in teaching. Most participants found it helpful in boosting student motivation and participation. They also saw it as simple to use and easy to apply in the classroom. Interestingly, factors like a student's semester and age influenced how effective they thought Kahoot! was, while their study program and how often they used it did not. Overall, the study shows that gamified tools like Kahoot! can enhance the teaching experience and suggests that teacher education programs should consider including them to make learning more dynamic and effective.
