The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of vocabulary and phonological awareness on students’ reading comprehension. This research was mainly quantitative in nature. The sample of this research was the tenth-grade students of SMK YPKP SENTANI. It consisted of 93 students assigned using random sampling technique. Vocabulary, phonology and reading comprehension tests were used as the instruments to collect the data. Then, the data were processed using regression analysis to figure out the effect of vocabulary and phonological awareness on reading comprehension. In the regression analysis using SPSS program, the data were entered into variable boxes. Vocabulary and phonological awareness scores were entered into independent variable box while scores of reading comprehension were entered into dependent variable box. The findings revealed that the regression value of vocabulary and phonological awareness on reading comprehension was significant. Furthermore, vocabulary and phonological awareness contributed 67.6% of effect on students’ reading comprehension. In addition, the finding of each variable showed that significant value of phonological awareness was higher than vocabulary. This result showed that the effect of phonological awareness was 64.5%, while the effect vocabulary was 31.2% on reading comprehension based on the Pearson Product Moment correlation.

One of the important skills in learning English is reading. There should be an effective strategy to teach this skill. This research is combining the form of contextual teaching and learning with local content material. By combining these two terms, there must be an increasing result from the students mastering reading skills. This research aims to examine the impact of contextual teaching and learning using the local content material on students’ reading comprehension at a junior high school in Indonesia. The population of its research is eighth-grade students, and two classes were selected as samples experimental class (treatment) and controlled class. This experimental study used reading tests as instruments to get the data. The test was formatted into multiple-choice items, consisting of pre-test and post-test. The researchers used the pre-test, treatment, and post-test techniques to collect the data. But in the control class, no treatment was applied to mastering reading skills. There was a significant effect in the treatment class than in the control class. It was proven by the effect size’s score of medium effect showed .5 deviation. It indicated that the treatment of using contextual teaching and learning with local content was successful.

The semiotic phenomenon is known to be closely related in the field of communication. This research especially focuses on the semiosis process identified from Cinta Laura Kiehl’s Instagram captions as a famous celebrity in Indonesia. The semiotic sign relation is seen through her captions that do not only include the text but also a form of icon reflected through emoticons added in the captions. This study applied qualitative research method to present the data analysis. Moreover, this research also uses several guiding perceptions with the main theory of sign relation by Charles Sanders Peirce and the supporting perception of happiness by Martin Seligman. There are several results determined from this research. The first result shows that the symbol sign relations in Cinta’s Instagram captions are in the form of texts that conveyed meaning in the expression of happiness that Cinta shares based on her life. Moreover, the emoticons in her Instagram captions have the function to enhance the expressions and contexts that the symbol initially stands for. The second result shows that the signs of happiness from Cinta’s Instagram captions are divided into two main aspects of relationship and achievements. Thus, the sign relations in Cinta’s Instagram captions are used in conveying the expressions of happiness Cinta shares based on her life.

It has been argued that demotivation can negatively affect learners’ interests in language learning. Thus, teaching strategies need to be performed in order to prevent or overcome demotivation. In this regard, using technology improves learners’ motivation and reduces demotivation. As a part of technology integration into language classrooms, digital storytelling can be one of the strategies taken to reduce learners’ demotivation. The present study is a conceptual study that aims to describe the potential benefits of integrating digital storytelling in EFL classrooms in trying times such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides discussing the merits of technology integration, especially digital storytelling in language classrooms, the present study will suggest strategies to integrate digital storytelling to increase motivation and decrease demotivation. The present study may merit educators and researchers interested in the discussions about using technology to minimize demotivation during challenging times such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Writing is the study of how a sentence is arranged or the connection between two parts of a piece of writing. In my previous study, students who got difficulty in writing because they cannot write their idea on paper, they stuck in organizing thoughts, using sequence and logic, and expressing their ideas. This research belonged to descriptive research. The instruments used in the study were closed and open-ended questionnaires, analysis of learners' papers, and observations. Based on the result of the use of digital mind mapping, it showed that students who applied digital mind mapping got more creative, and find a simplify difficult concept in using their mind to think about what the important information should be in the writing a technique used in starting the writing and planning of writing. Based on the students’ responses, almost all participants agree that digital mind mapping was appropriate as one of the techniques in writing class, especially for computer science majors. This study investigates and describes English literature students’ pragmatic knowledge in uttering English refusal statements in different situations (request, invitation, suggestion, offering). The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe students’ refusal strategy and politeness strategy while uttering English refusal. The participants in this study consisted of twenty-five undergraduate students, 7 males and 18 females, enrolled in the second and sixth semesters of the English literature department of Diponegoro University. The only instrument used by researchers in this study was a questionnaire based on Beebe et al.’s (1990) work. The result showed that the students use direct and indirect refusal strategies to refuse something. Most students prefer a direct refusal strategy to the interlocutors who are their peers (friends) or subordinates. However, some students (higher semester) prefer indirect strategies with their peers in some situations. It means that the students respect their interlocutor even though they are in a higher position. Moreover, in the politeness strategy, they use two types of strategies which are deference and solidarity politeness strategy. However, the students (higher semester) prefer to use the deference politeness strategy.

Assessment is a part of everyday life in education, and it takes many forms for many different aims and levels. Measuring the students' progress, competency, and accountability was necessary during the learning process. This study aims to learn about lecturers' opinions and practices about using online assessment during Covid-19 in the context of ELT classrooms. The research method used is qualitative research with a case study approach. It was conducted in the Economics and Business Faculty of the University of Muhammadiyah Jambi. Participatory observation and interviews are used to acquire data. It found some crucial points; online media used by lecturers to assess students and the positive and negative sides of lecturers' online assessment practices. They choose online text messages like Whats App Group and Telegram Group for interactive assessment. For neat task submission, they chose Google Classroom. And for assessing speaking, Tiktok, Instagram and Youtube became alternative platforms. There are benefits and drawbacks that lecturers have encountered, such as effectiveness and efficiency in correcting students' tasks as its benefits, plagiarism, student cheating, and extending submission tasks as its drawbacks.

Speaking ability is influenced by several factors, one of which is a factor comes from the student, namely the factor self-anxiety. Anxious often appears before, during and after this process of public speaking takes place is a sense of discomfort experienced students. This usually has a bad effect and reduces concentration on the topic being discussed when the anxiety level is getting worse. The aims of this research are to find out the students’ anxiety level, to find the factors that can cause students’ anxiety in public speaking. The instruments of this research were a questionnaire about several problems in public speaking, especially during teaching practices, an interview and documentation. The researcher conducted the research on 6th semester students at the English Education Department, STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study shows the factors of anxiety that make students less proficient in English public speaking, namely; communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and comfort in using English in a public speaking class. The results of this study will contribute to the scope of language teaching in terms of student affective factors, especially self-anxiety factors during language learning.

Popular literature is an entertaining work and is widely loved by the public. This study focuses on formula analysis of fantasy genres identified from the Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Aladdin (2019) movies seen from several scenes in both movies. The films is an interesting fantasy genre movies because although the movies is different, it has the same formula. This research uses a comparative descriptive method with a qualitative approach to present data analysis. In addition, this study also used several theories from Saricks (2009) to examine the formula of the fantasy genre and the theory of comparative literature from Wellek and Warren's (1942). The study reveals that there are four points of the fantasy genre formula that have something in common in these two movies. First, in the Characteristics of Belle and Jasmine who are brave women and have an adventurous spirit. Second, the same Storyline between the two movies where both are the same against enemies who want to kill the main male characters. Third, the same Frame Setting contains magical elements. Finally, in both movies there are tense scenes that quickly turn into humorous scenes or in the fantasy genre formula called Pacing. From the results obtained by the researchers, it was concluded that in both movies there are elements of fantasy formula. These formulas then make fantasy movies into films that are great demand and liked by the audience.
