Abstract

Kaliring is a sacred structure used in the Wara death ceremony among the Hindu Kaharingan community in South Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan. This tradition serves a dual purpose: physically as a container for ancestral skulls and symbolically as a representation of the relationship between humans and ancestral spirits. However, modernization, lifestyle changes, and the lack of academic documentation have led to a gradual decline in its preservation and meaning. This study aims to describe the physical form of Kaliring, identify the symbols contained within it, and analyze the cultural and religious values reflected in the context of the Wara ceremony. The research employs a qualitative approach with a naturalistic method. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with religious and customary leaders, and documentation studies of artifacts and ritual records. The findings reveal that Kaliring is made of ironwood in a rectangular shape supported by two pillars and decorated with motifs of animals, plants, human figures, and red cloth symbolizing purity and spiritual strength. These symbols embody educational (religious, social, ethical, and character), cultural, and economic values that reflect the belief system and social order of the Dayak Kaharingan people. The culmination of the Wara ceremony is marked by the purification of skulls by the Kandung (holy person), followed by their placement into the Kaliring as a symbol of the ancestral spirit’s (liau) transformation into a deity (kalilungan). The study concludes that Kaliring is a sacred cultural heritage that reinforces spiritual identity and preserves the continuity of local wisdom within the Hindu Kaharingan community.

Abstract

Hinduism can be understood integrally as a system of humanistic values that is not confined to a single, segmented terminology, but rather manifested through a set of universal values with broad relevance to social life. Values such as Satyam (truth), Dharma (virtue), Seva (service), Santih (peace), Prema (compassion), Manava Seva Mandawa Seva, Ahimsa Paramo Dharma, and Vasudaiva Kutumbakam represent ethical foundations that can be implemented across diverse social contexts. This study aims to analyze the contribution of Hindu religious education in fostering religious moderation and social acceptance of diversity through an ethnoscience-based perspective. The research employs a literature review method with a critical discourse approach to examine Hindu values that can be internalized within educational practices. The findings indicate that Hindu religious education plays a strategic role in cultivating awareness of diversity through the habituation of teachings such as Tri Kaya Parisudha, Satyam, Sivam, Sundaram, Seva, Ahimsa, and Prema as foundational principles leading to the realization of Santih (peace). In addition, local practices such as matilesang raga are understood as ethnoscience-based actions that strengthen the integration of religious values, culture, and local wisdom. This study concludes that the systematic internalization of Hindu values within ethnoscience-oriented education serves as a reconstructive strategy for promoting religious moderation, while simultaneously constructing harmony among religious values, culture, customs, and social norms within multicultural societies.

Abstract

The implementation of Hindu religious education is guided by the curriculum established by the national government. However, there are variations, particularly in Central Kalimantan Province, as Hindu religious teachers integrate Hindu religious material with local Kaharingan teachings as a means of practicing their religion in their daily lives. This is necessary due to the diversity of traditions within the Hindu archipelago, thus minimizing factors that cause conflict and disintegration. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the relevance and potential for integrating local Kaharingan values into the Hindu religious education curriculum. It also aims to explore the values of local Kaharingan wisdom in Hindu Religious Education learning. The method used in this study is a qualitative method, conducted through in-depth exploration at the research location. The results of this study show that the local Kaharingan teaching values integrated into Hindu religious education learning include 1) Lime Sarahan teaching values on the Panca Sradha topic. 2) Hindu Kaharingan ceremony values on the Panca Yadnya topic, 3) Kandayu and Tandak teaching values on the Dharma Gita topic, and 4) Pandehen teaching values on the Dharma Wacana topic. The method of integrating local Kaharingan teaching values in Hindu religious education learning uses practical methods, assignment methods, and methods that can be directly understood by students. It can be concluded that local Kaharingan teaching values can be integrated into Hindu Religious Education learning. With the integration of local Kaharingan values in Hindu religious education learning, not only can it increase students' sradha bhakti and justification of faith, but students can also practice and implement Kaharingan teachings in everyday life in society.

Abstract

Sandung is a distinctive structure in the Hindu Kaharingan tradition of the Dayak Ngaju community, serving as a repository for the bones of deceased family members following the tiwah ceremony. This tradition continues to exist today and reflects both cultural identity and religious belief. The purpose of this study is to describe the meaning, functions, and values embodied in the construction of sandung, while also examining how the tradition is maintained amidst social change. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method using both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with six key informants and discussions with community members knowledgeable about the tradition, while secondary data were collected from documentation and related studies. Data collection involved observation, interviews, and documentation with customary leaders, community figures, and Hindu Kaharingan practitioners. The findings indicate that the construction of sandung requires specific skills, adherence to customary norms, and deep spiritual understanding. Beyond its role as a bone repository, sandung embodies profound social and religious meanings: it represents filial responsibility toward deceased parents, gratitude and respect for ancestors, and a medium for maintaining harmony between the living and the dead. The study concludes that the sandung tradition plays a vital role in strengthening the cultural identity of the Dayak Ngaju community, preserving the spiritual values of Hindu Kaharingan, and is believed to bring prosperity to surviving family members. Therefore, the continuity of this tradition requires collective support from society and younger generations to ensure its preservation.

Abstract

Global cultural disruption and hedonistic lifestyles are triggering the moral degradation of the younger generation, necessitating a revitalization of the role of traditional institutions as bastions of values. This study aims to describe the community-based Hindu character education strategy in the Kerobokan Traditional Village, Buleleng, and analyze the process of internalizing these values in the digital era. Applying qualitative methods with a descriptive-analytical approach, data collection was conducted through participatory observation of pasraman (traditional market) activities and ceremonies, in-depth interviews with village leaders (prajuru) and youth, and a documentary study of customary law (awig-awig). The results indicate that the implementation of character education takes place within an adaptive sociocultural ecosystem: the community functions as a More Knowledgeable Other, providing scaffolding through the Ngayah tradition; the implementation of anti-drug regulations (Pararem) as a critical cultural action to break the culture of silence, and the use of the Nyekar ritual as a participatory medium that instills egalitarian values. It concludes that the traditional village has successfully transformed from merely a guardian of tradition into an effective non-formal educational institution that balances physical rituals and communication technology. This study provides a scientific contribution in the form of a local wisdom-based pedagogical model that integrates the perspectives of social psychology, critical pedagogy, and media theory to strengthen national cultural identity.

Abstract

Digital transformation has blurred the boundaries between the sacred and the profane, positioning social media not merely as a means of communication but also as a new arena for religious expression. In the context of Balinese Hinduism, the translocation of sacred spaces onto digital timelines raises questions about how sacredness is produced, perceived, and renegotiated within the digital ecology. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of uploaded sacredness by emphasizing the dynamics of visual representation, authority, and online community validation. This research employs a qualitative approach through digital ethnography and visual anthropology. Data were collected through online observation, documentation of 120 posts on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube (2022–2024), as well as semi-structured interviews with 20 key informants, including priests, content creators, and Hindu practitioners. Data analysis was conducted inductively through visual coding, digital discourse analysis, and ethnographic interpretation. The study reveals four main findings. First, sacred spaces are aesthetically represented through photos, videos, and poetic captions that extend religious experiences into the virtual sphere. Second, the emergence of hybrid rituals marks the convergence of offline ritual practices and online content production. Third, religious authority shifts into the digital realm, producing dynamics of post-traditional religiosity in which young priests and content creators become authoritative figures. Fourth, community validation through likes, comments, and reshares constitutes the legitimacy of digital sacredness, although often accompanied by tensions between sanctity and commodification. The study demonstrates that sacredness does not disappear in its translocation to social media but is re-mediated through visual aesthetics, community participation, and platform logics. This research contributes to the study of religion, visual culture, and digital anthropology by asserting that uploaded sacredness is a hybrid religious phenomenon that is both global and local, while also enriching theoretical frameworks on religious mediation in the era of digital disruption.

Abstract

A name is not merely a personal label; it represents a complex symbol encompassing social identity, power relations, spiritual significance, and cultural unification. This article explores the role of names in Hindu communities in Bali and West Lombok through four key lenses: as markers of individual and social identity, as instruments for sustaining traditional hierarchies, as symbols of religious meaning and spiritual protection, and as representations of identity in the digital age. Utilizing a symbolic-cultural and interdisciplinary approach, the study demonstrates how names serve both cognitive and performative functions-shaping identity, reinforcing authority, and mediating between the seen (sekala) and unseen (niskala) dimensions of life. In the last decade, digital transformation has introduced new layers of meaning, as names increasingly operate as online identities through social media, localized scripts in domain names, and digital administrative platforms. Despite these changes, symbolic and spiritual meanings remain robust, supported by processes of cultural adaptation and innovation. The article concludes that the cultural significance of names in Bali and West Lombok reflects an ongoing negotiation between tradition and modernity, emphasizing the importance of symbolic interpretation and culturally grounded digital practices for heritage preservation.

Abstract

The practice of yajña in the era of technological dominance has entered a critical period due to the rise of the phenomenon of the Religion Misconception Pandemic which causes yajña practitioners to fail to understand the meaning and only focus on quantity. Therefore, the Cognition Recovery Method is important to be realized through a renewable innovative method based on literature to create an innovative and relevant method in overcoming the Religion Misconception Pandemic when performing yajña. The data analysis techniques are (1) analyzing the referred lontar, (2) tracing the Religion Misperception Pandemic regarding the hermeneutics of yajña in the referred lontar, (3) developing a Cognition Recovery Method to correct yajña misconceptions, and (4) presenting the findings in a structured manner. The results of the study indicate that the lontar-based Cognition Recovery Method is quite effective in correcting yajña misconceptions through efforts; (1) Cognition Recovery Method Pro Kayika, in the form of introducing ritual sanctions, curative efforts, and behavioral control, (2) Cognition Recovery Method Pro Wacika, in the form of controlling aspects of speech and ritual sanctions, and (3) Cognition Recovery Method Pro Manacika, in the form of controlling thoughts. These efforts contribute to enriching the number of renewable methods and can be used in science by including meaningful analysis based on literary studies as a legacy of local wisdom. These efforts play a role in understanding in depth what, how, and why yajña is obligatory for Hindus to carry out.

Abstract

Character education is widely developed through universal and secular approaches, but noble values can also be drawn from local and religious sources, including teachings from sacred Hindu texts such as the Yakṣa Praśna. Scientific studies linking ethics in Hinduism with national character education are still limited. Therefore, it is important to conduct research that delves into the relevance of moral teachings in Yakṣa Praśna as a source of character education values. The purpose of this research is to understand and describe the values of Hindu ethics relevant to character education, sourced from the Yakṣa Praśna text. This research applies the library research method with a descriptive qualitative approach, referring to the primary data source, namely the Yakṣa Praśna text. The data analysis techniques used in this study are: (1) analyzing the Yakṣa Praśna text, (2) linking moral values with character education, and (3) interpreting the relevance of Hindu moral values in the Yakṣa Praśna to the formation of student character in the modern era. (4) Presenting the findings in a systematic thematic description. The research findings indicate that the Yakṣa Praśna text contains values of religiosity, responsibility, peacefulness, and discipline that align with the principles of character education. These values can serve as a guide for students in forming an ethical and noble personality.

Abstract

The shift in the belief system from Christianity to Hinduism actually created a form of consciousness, from individuals who believed in the new faith, then returned to the original teachings. This aspect can be read as a turning point for the occurrence of reconversion in Pulau Pisau Regency. The purpose of this research is to discover the conceptual schema and empirical findings regarding liturgical practices that were initially distracted by the emergence of a new belief (Christianity), then redefined and reconverted to the original teachings (Hindu Kaharingan). This research uses a qualitative method, within a case study approach. The case study (research on the Hindu Kaharingan social-religious community) attempts to investigate a specific case in a specific location. Empirical findings on conversion can be distinguished into 3 factors. First, the main factor leading to a return to the original teachings is self-stimulation or being stimulated by one's own personal will. This can be seen from the imperfect understanding of the new religious system (Christianity), compared to the original religion (Hindu Kaharingan). The second cause is that religious reconversion is caused by amalgamation (mixed marriages). The process of religious reconversion, in its aspect of amalgamation, involves inner changes that occur in Christian communities transitioning to Hindu Kaharingan in Pulang Pisau Regency. Marriage plays an important role in the reconversion process in this area because it involves both endogenous and exogenous origins. The third background is that the reconversion process can be traced back to the legitimacy of the Hindu Kaharingan religion, which is called pandudusan. The ceremony for the return of the righteous person uses 1 coconut, 1 egg, 1 lilis lamiang flower, undus/oil, a bowl of water, tampung tawar, a bowl from the pond, and a knife. In conclusion, religious reconversion involves the accumulation of religious-based authority and the sociological factors of the individual.
