Abstract

Background: The 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey results show that the stunting rate reaches 21.6%, wasting 7.7%, and underweight 17.7%. Malnutrition problems in toddlers, especially those suffering from Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI), are often exacerbated by the provision of Complementary Feeding that does not meet nutritional standards. Therefore, greater attention to complementary feeding quality is essential to improving children's nutritional status and reducing the risk of ARI complications. Objective: To identify the relationship between the quality of complementary breastfeeding and nutritional conditions, such as underweight, wasting, and stunting, in children under two years of age suffering from ARI, as an urgent effort to address malnutrition problems and improve children's health in vulnerable communities. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with a target of toddlers aged 6-24 months who suffered from ARI, with a sample of 96 children. Data on complementary breastfeeding was collected through interviews using questionnaires, as well as weight measurements with digital scales and height with a lenghtboard. Statistical analysis using the Chi-square test. Results: Nutritional problems in two-year-old children with ISPA were found to be 44.8% underweight, 60.4% wasting, and 36.5% stunting. Complementary Feeding quality that did not meet the recommendations was significantly associated with the incidence of being underweight (p-value 0.035; OR 2.488), and wasting (p-value <0.0001; OR 6.657), but was not significantly associated with the incidence of stunting (p-value 0.95; OR 0.973).Conclusion: The quality of Complementary Feeding that does not meet nutritional standards in children with ARI is significantly related to the incidence of underweight and wasting.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of anemia among adolescent females in Indonesia grew from 22.7% in 2013 to 32% in 2018. Anemia is frequently caused by an iron deficiency. Efforts that can be made include eating iron-rich foods like mocaf and red bean. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the physicochemical properties and level of preference for chips made from mocaf flour and red bean flour as a snack for anemia. Methods: This study used a real experimental design with a completely random design. This research was carried out from August 2023 to December 2023. There were 4 treatment groups with 3 repetitions with the ratio (mocaf flour: red bean flour), namely P0 (100%:0%), P1 (40%:60%), P2 (50%:50%), and P3 (60%:40%). Physicochemical property testing was carried out at the Food Safety and Quality Testing Laboratory, and the level of preference test was carried out at the Dietetics and Culinary Laboratory, Brawijaya University. Statistical analysis used the parametric One-Way ANOVA or One Way ANOVA Welch test with post hoc Bonferroni or Games-Howell and non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test with post hoc Mann WhitneyResults: There were significant differences (p<0.05) in physicochemical evaluation such as protein, energy, water content, ash content, iron content, hardness, breaking strength, and level of preference parameters such as color, taste, aroma, and overall appearance. Apart from that, there were no statistical differences in fat, carbohydrate, or texture levels (p>0.05).Conclusion: The addition of mocaf flour and red bean flour has a significant effect on the physicochemical evaluation, especially on parameters such as protein, energy, water content, ash content, iron content, hardness, breaking strength and the level of preference for color, taste, aroma and overall appearance.

Abstract

Background: Vitamin D is linked to immunity and autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Autoimmune diseases often involve impaired regulation of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Despite numerous studies exploring the relationship between vitamin D and Tregs in SLE, the findings remain inconclusive. Objectives: To determine whether there is a relationship or correlation between vitamin D and regulatory T cells in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus based on existing research articles employing different research methods. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines from February to May 2024. We sourced articles from Google Scholar, PubMed, and MDPI, focusing on research published between 2014 and 2024. Inclusion criteria were relevance to the topic and availability in full text, while exclusions were animal studies, research older than ten years, and articles not available in full text. Seven articles met the criteria and were reviewed. Results: Out of the seven articles reviewed, five found a correlation between vitamin D levels and the ratio and function of Tregs in SLE patients. Specifically, higher levels of vitamin D were associated with increased suppression of Tregs. Conclusion: The results of studies on vitamin D levels and Tregs in SLE patients are inconsistent. Further evaluation and additional research are required to determine the potential clinical benefits of vitamin D management in SLE therapy.
