Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of using WhatsApp as a tool for teaching English idiomatic expressions to pre-intermediate EAP students in the Non-English Department at the University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. From a pool of 250 students, 64 participants were selected based on their English proficiency using the Nelson Quick Check Placement Test and divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received idiom lessons and exercises through a WhatsApp group called Idiom Learning Group. They practiced 60 idioms outside the classroom, interacted with the researcher, and could make WhatsApp video calls for additional clarification. In contrast, the control group received the same lessons through traditional face-to-face instruction. The study was conducted over nine sessions. The first two sessions involved administering the placement test and a pre-test on idiomatic competence. The treatment phase spanned six sessions, during which the experimental group used WhatsApp for instruction and practice while the control group engaged in in-class learning. In the final session, both groups took a post-test to measure their improvement in idiomatic competence. Data analysis using paired samples and independent samples t-tests revealed a significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups, with the experimental group significantly outperforming the control group (p < .05). The findings demonstrate that teaching idioms through mobile technology, specifically WhatsApp, enhances idiomatic competence more effectively than traditional methods. This suggests that integrating mobile technology into language teaching can provide learners with flexible, interactive, and engaging opportunities for language practice, ultimately improving their learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze trends and research correlations regarding the use of digital comics as a learning resource to enhance elementary school students' learning effectiveness in the IPAS subject (Integrated Natural and Social Sciences) over the past five years. The method used is a literature study with bibliometric analysis utilizing VOSviewer software. A total of 200 journals from various academic sources were analyzed to identify patterns of keyword relationships, research trends, and scientific gaps that have not been widely explored. The results show that there are three main clusters in the study of digital comics as learning resources: learning effectiveness, the role of teachers and learning media, and the development of innovative learning resources. Network visualization using VOSviewer reveals that digital comics contribute to increasing student engagement, clarifying conceptual material, and assisting teachers in delivering more interactive lessons. Based on these findings, it is recommended that future research focus on developing more adaptive digital comic-based learning models and integrating interactive technology to improve learning effectiveness in elementary schools.

Abstract

The learning process applied by educators has varied in the use of learning models; however, students' critical thinking skills are still considered low. In light of this issue, the researcher attempted to implement a learning process using a model that had never been used by educators before, namely the problem posing learning model. This study aims to examine the effect of the problem posing learning model on the critical thinking skills of fifth-grade students in mathematics at MIN 10 Bandar Lampung. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design (post-test only control group design). The study was conducted at MIN 10 Bandar Lampung, specifically in the fifth grade, involving two classes as the experimental and control groups, as well as an additional class for validation purposes. The instruments used in this study included tests. Data analysis was performed using the t-test. The results showed that the normality test yielded values of 0.180 and 0.054, both greater than 0.05, indicating that the data were normally distributed. The homogeneity test showed a value of 0.918, which is also greater than 0.05, indicating that the data were homogeneous. The hypothesis test using the Independent Samples t-Test resulted in a value of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, meaning that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the problem posing learning model on the critical thinking skills of fifth-grade mathematics students at MIN 10 Bandar Lampung.
