Abstract

Background: Self-esteem is an evaluation of oneself that can be positive or negative. Self-esteem affects the way individuals value and views themselves and others. Self-esteem increases gradually during young adulthood. On the other hand, anxiety disorders are also prone to occur during this time. Individuals with low self-esteem arefound to often experience symptoms of anxiety. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety levels among final year medical students, Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University. Methods: This research is a correlational analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. Total sampling was used in this research involving final year medical students, Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (Class of 2018). Self-esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES), and anxiety levels were assessed using the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS) that had been tested valid and reliable. Data were analyzed using Spearman and Lambda Correlation Tests. Results: There were 226 respondents involved in this study. The majority of respondents had high self-esteem (69.5%) and a mild level of anxiety (84.1%). Gender was known to affect the level of anxiety (p=0.026) but not self-esteem. Academic achievement and residency status was known not to affect self-esteem and anxiety levels. There was a significant relationship (p=0.000) between self-esteem and anxiety levels with a moderate negative correlation (r=-0.289).Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between self-esteem and anxiety levels.

Abstract

Background: Today, mental health is a major concern among all age groups. Japan is the only country among G7 countries where suicide is the largest cause of death among youths 10-19 years old. However, many people find it difficult to confide in others about private mental health issues. Objective: We pilot-tested a “Mood Tracker” tool intended to help users record, reflect upon, and exercise control over their own emotions, in order to assess its acceptability and to explore its impact among Japanese university students. Methods: Participants were 20 medical students recruited at Fukushima Medical University. They were given a calendar and a paper listing 16 different emotions, with instructions to designate a different color for each emotion on the list, and to color each day of a month according to that day’s overall emotion. In addition, participants filled out a questionnaire before, right after, and a month after mood tracking, for self-assessment of mental state and satisfaction with the tool. Results: All participants except for one completed the intervention and provided positive comments. Although not statistically significant, the proportion of students who were highly satisfied with their school life increased from 25% before the intervention to 42% one month after the intervention. Conclusion: This small-scale pilot test suggested that mood tracking was well accepted among Japanese medical students and worth further investigation for its potential to positively impact mental health.

Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases are still an important issue for Indonesia. One of the opportunistic bacteria that causes various infectious diseases is Staphylococcus aureus. There is a need for new alternative treatments that have the same high potential as antibiotics. Bajakah wood (Spatholobus sp.) is a plant that grows abundantly in the tropical forests of Central Kalimantan. This plant has the potential antibacterial potential because it contains secondary metabolite compounds, namely alkaloids, tannins and glycosides. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Bajakah wood (Spatholobus sp.) on the growth of S. aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria through antimicrobe sensitivity test. Methods: In this study, three different methods were used, the disc method, the well method and the Whatman paper method using a concentration of 5%; 15%; 25%; 50% and 100% extract. Results: The results showed that the ethanol extract of Bajakah Wood (Spatholobus sp.) had antibacterial activity against S. aureus ATCC 25923 at the lowest concentration, namely 5%. The disk method obtained an average inhibition zone of 11.1 mm, the well method obtained an average inhibition zone of 16.8 mm and the Whatman paper method obtained an average inhibition zone of 10.8 mm.Conclusion: From this study, the ethanol extract of Bajakah wood (Spatholobus sp.) has antibacterial potential against S. aureus bacteria with its secondary metabolite compounds.

Abstract

Background: Currently, cataract surgery is categorized into two main techniques: phacoemulsification and femtosecond-laser-assisted-cataract-surgery (FLACS)..Objective: The objective of this study was to present a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the single-handed coaxial phacoemulsification technique used in cataract surgery. Methods: The study conducted a systematic review of PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases. The participants included in our study were individuals diagnosed with simple cataract. These individuals had treatment using either single-handed or two-handed phacoemulsification or FLACS techniques. Publications predating the year 2000 were omitted from consideration. The abstracts of the publications were analyzed utilizing the PRISMA diagram, and those deemed to be somewhat and highly pertinent were incorporated. In total, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on six research, consisting of two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and four non-randomized controlled trials (nonRCTs).Results: The visual acuity (VA) shown a statistically significant improvement in the single-handed group compared to the two-handed group at the one-week postoperative assessment (p<0.05). However, this difference was not observed at the one-month and three-month postoperative assessments.  The single-handed group had a smaller angle of error (AE) compared to the two-handed group (p=0.005). Additionally, another study observed an improvement in visual acuity (VA) in individuals who underwent single-handed, two-handed group, and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). However, the study did not identify any statistically significant variations in VA improvement across the three groups. There was no statistically significant difference observed among the three groups in relation to ECL and CCT. The intraoperative phacoparameter exhibited a statistically significant decrease in the single-handed group (P<0.01) compared to the two-handed group, while it did not differ substantially from the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) group. Conclusion: When comparing the two-handed phacoemulsification technique to FLACS, it was observed that a single-handed method exhibited a reduced angle of error, minimized corneal damage, and exhibited early visual outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Non-epithelial ovarian cancer is a very rare type, accounting for less than 10% of ovarian cancers. This type of cancer originates from germ cells or stromal-sex cord cells. Disease-free survival (DFS) in cancer is the length of time after primary treatment for cancer ends so that patients survive without signs or symptoms of cancer. Recurrence is the return of cancer that has been declared in remission, usually after a certain period in which cancer cannot be detected. Cancer can return to the same place (primary) or other parts of the body. Ovarian cancer is a disease with a high probability of recurrence, after achieving a complete response to chemotherapy, >70%. Assessment of the recurrence rate is one of the ways used to assess the effectiveness of therapyAIM: Knowing the incidence of recurrence in patients with non-epithelial ovarian cancer who have received operative therapy with or without adjuvant chemotherapyMETHOD: Descriptive study with a case series research design and analytical works. The research sample was 50 non-epithelial ovarian cancer patients who were treated at RSUP Dr. Karadi Semarang from 2018-2019 who met the inclusion criteria and did not have exclusion criteria, 22 patients were loss of follow up during observation. The data collection technique used is total sampling. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p<0.05.RESULT:  The most reported types of non-epithelial ovarian cancer were granulosa (39.3%), dysgerminoma (21.4%), yolk sac (17.9%), and mixed germ cell (17.9%). Most of the cancer cases are progressive (60.7%). There were 3 recurrence incidents happen during observation period, 2 patients with granulosa cell tumor in >50 years age group and 1 patient with Yolk Sac cell tumor in 20-50 years age group. Higher survival rates were found for tumor residues <2cm compared to >2cm at 6 months (54.5% vs 45.5%), 12 months (54.5% vs 36.4%), 18 months (45.5% vs 36.4%), and 24th month (45.5% vs 36.4%).CONCLUSION: Optimization of surgery depends on the type of non-epithelial ovarian cancer cells, age, and the stage when the diagnosis was first established to be a factor in the incidence of recurrence.
