Abstract

This study investigated the difficulties faced by eighth-grade students at MTsN Padangsidimpuan in learning English vocabulary. The research revealed that students encountered various challenges, including Pronunciation, Meaning, Spelling, Memorization, Differentiation and Sentence integration. Additionally, the study identified several factors contributing to these difficulties: Lack of engagement and Limited exposure. To address these issues, the research explored pedagogical strategies used by teachers to help students overcome their difficulties. These strategies included Vocabulary tasks, Memorization techniques, Differentiated learning, Active practice, Engaging methods, Dictionary skills. This research highlights the importance of understanding student difficulties in vocabulary learning and implementing effective pedagogical approaches to overcome them. The identified challenges, contributing factors, and teacher strategies provide valuable insights for improving English vocabulary instruction in the context of MTsN Padangsidimpuan and beyond.

Abstract

Accelerationism plays a significant role in advancing scientific knowledge and the framework of human existence. Its contributions are manifested in facilitating convenient and swift access to information sources, digital communication, and the availability of diverse technological tools aiding various professions. On the contrary, accelerationism leads to a series of disparities between capitalism and modernism. It also results in humans losing control over themselves, time, and life and even contributes to destroying species and the environment. The situational analysis of accelerationism in this study aligned with Liu's findings in "On the Accelerationist Critique of the Problem of Capitalist Modernity" (2022), highlighting the inseparable dual nature of accelerationism concerning capitalism and modernism. The fluid and straightforward concept of accelerationism can be observed in popular cultural products such as movies. Movies like Interstellar (2014) and The Platform (2019) encapsulate the concept of accelerationism within the scope of capitalism from varying perspectives.This content-analysis study aimed to distinguish the interpretations of accelerationism within Interstellar and The Platform as portrayed through scenes, dialogues, and other cinematic elements. The findings of the study, which employed a qualitative descriptive approach, were the interpretation of accelerationism within certain scenes of Interstellar depicting Earth's demise and the agenda of rescuing humanity by journeying to another planet. Accelerationism was also interpreted through dialogues and metaphorical scenes illustrating the concept of the capitalist food-chain mechanism in the prison cells of The Platform.

Abstract

Literary works offer an in-depth and subjective perspective on a historical event. Historical events that may not be fully documented can be revived through literary works. This research aims to find a reflection of the history of the New Order using the Newhistoricism approach formulated by Greenblatt (1980) in Leila S. Chudori's latest work entitled Namaku Alam. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research using content analysis techniques. Based on the nature of the new historicism approach, data collection was carried out using a parallel reading method between literary and non-literary texts. Data analysis techniques were carried out using archaeological methods and in-depth description methods. The results of the research prove that the historical events of the New Order that were discovered included the arrest of people who were related to the PKI along with the negative stigma received by political prisoners and their descendants; personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness policies; supervision of people's reading; and petition 50.

Abstract

Female representation in the media had been drastically changed as the women empowerment was put into the spotlight in international society, including the Western countries. The feminism movement had stimulated various creative content, including in the emotional advertisements where brands were trying to build a closer relation with their customers instead of the usual hard-selling ads. Femvertising was one of the products of women empowerment in the creative industry; in short, it referred to advertisements made with messages to support girls and women. This study was aimed to find out the discourse strategies of current femveritising in conveying female empowerment message. this article conducted a qualitative study of video ads by Mercedes-Benz titled “Be One of Many” and the findings were presented in descriptive format. The data analysis was conducted by using Sara Mills’ model of Critical Discourse Analysis. The findings showed that the 2023’s International Women’s Day femvertising put women as their main subjects and also conveyed a specific “women support women”. In conclusion, current femvertising’s aim went beyond empowering oneself to be better than others or to be either the first or only woman in a profession or field, instead women should empower each other so that more women would achieve their dream and success even in the fields that are still dominated by men.

Abstract

Linguistic intelligence is one aspect that must be stimulated and utilized appropriately from an early age. Because young children often imitate what they hear and see. However, not all children are optimal in developing their linguistic intelligence. Several things related to linguistic intelligence include being able to convey what is thought through verbal means in the form of words. Therefore, children's learning processes need to be modified by applying role-playing learning methods. This research aims to prove the application of role playing in improving children's linguistic intelligence. This type of research is an experiment with a one group pretest and posttest design. The data for this research are scores from observations of children's linguistic intelligence. The research results show that the application of role playing methods in learning is proven to be able to improve and develop the linguistic intelligence of young children.

Abstract

Treatment with mantras is one form of traditional medicine that is still believed and practiced in Indonesia, including in Sei Kuning Village, Rambah Samo Subdistrict, Rokan Hulu Regency. This study aims to describe the form and meaning of mantras to ward off illness in the village. This research uses a qualitative method with an oral literature approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants who are mantra speakers in the village. The results showed that the form of mantras in Sei Kuning village is in the form of pantun. The types of antidote mantras found include mantras for getting stung, swollen body mantras, headaches, toothaches, and bone diseases. The results of this study show that the mantras in Sei Kuning village have various forms and are used to treat various diseases. The mantras also have deep meanings and contain cultural values that are important to preserve.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of truth in the Kethoprak play "Saridin Andum Waris" performed by Bhakti Kuncoro Pati in 2022. Using a sociology of literature approach, we analyze how the play's storyline reflects substantive truth, exploring its relationship to procedural truth. Our data, comprising characters, plot, and settings, is examined in relation to the lived experiences of these elements in Javanese society. The analysis reveals that "Saridin Andum Waris" prioritizes substantive truth over procedural truth. This manifests in the play's conflicts, which arise and unfold due to irrationalities and emotional motivations rather than through legal or logical sequences. This suggests the play engages with deeper societal truths beyond surface-level legal or factual accuracy. By exploring the play's construction of truth, this study offers new insights into Kethoprak's role in reflecting and critiquing Javanese society. It also highlights the potential of dramatic works to delve into nuanced and subjective understandings of truth beyond established legal or rational frameworks.

Abstract

In Rokan Hulu, there is a unique tradition called Upah-upah. This tradition is interesting to research because it is still used today which serves to restore the spirit. The aim of this study was to describe the form and function of the upah-upah tradition in Batas village. In this study the authors used qualitative methods. The steps for collecting data are, first, making observations regarding the selection of informants taken for research. Second, conduct interviews with informants regarding upah-upahs in Batas village by recording them. Third, transcribe the recording results. Fourth, process the data that has been transcribed and fifth, make an analysis of the results of the data that has been transcribed. The results of research on the meaning and function of the upah-upah tradition of the people of Batas Village, Tambusai District, Rokan Hulu Regency, concluded that the meaning contained in the upah-upah tradition is as a form of gratitude for what God has given, whether in the form of safety from disasters, after giving birth and when starting a new life. Apart from that, the function of the Upah-upah tradition for the people of Batas Village is, first, to restore enthusiasm. Second, provide self-confidence to people who are being paid. Third, welcoming and giving thanks for someone's life journey. Apart from that, wages are used as a tradition to restore or restore a person's enthusiasm, such as after an accident, after giving birth, wages after marriage, wages after completing a treatment, wages after graduating from college, and wages after graduating from college. finished circumcision.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Wordwall, a web-based learning platform, in boosting understanding and interest in Indonesian language learning for junior high school level IX students. The study implemented a mixed-methods approach. Data was collected through observations of teaching and learning patterns, interviews with students and teachers, and pre- and post-intervention tests to assess student learning outcomes. Data analysis involved reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that using Wordwall led to a significant increase in student learning outcomes and a noticeable improvement in both their understanding and interest in Indonesian language learning. This suggests that Wordwall, which allows convenient access to learning materials through student devices anytime and anywhere, can be an effective tool for enhancing teacher-student engagement and improving student achievement in Indonesian language education.
