Abstract

Through an ecocritical perspective, this paper investigates the issue of ecological consciousness in children's literature from Southeast Asia. With a focus on four tales from Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia, the study explores the interaction between people and the environment—more specifically, rivers and oceans. The purpose of the study is to expose anthropocentrism and how it affects human existence in these stories. The study uses content analysis in conjunction with a descriptive qualitative method to look for recurring themes and patterns in the chosen stories. The portrayal of human-environment links in each narrative is examined in depth in the first section of the examination. The role of rivers and oceans as allies and adversaries is examined in the second section. By analyzing various Southeast Asian viewpoints, this study adds to our understanding of ecological consciousness in children's literature and illuminates the complex interactions that exist in the area between the environment and humankind.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the REACT (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, Transferring) model on the writing skills of university students. The research objectives were to describe students' writing skills before and after using the REACT model and to investigate the model's effect on their writing performance. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 40 undergraduate students enrolled in an English writing course. The experimental group (n = 20) received writing instruction using the REACT model, while the control group (n = 20) received traditional writing instruction. Pre-test and post-test writing assessments were used to evaluate students' writing skills. The results showed that the experimental group’s writing skills improved from a mean score of 56.94 (SD = 8.12) in the pre-test to 75.88 (SD = 6.45) in the post-test, indicating a significant improvement from a “Fair” to a “More than sufficient” level. The control group's mean scores were 55.78 (SD = 7.89) and 61.23 (SD = 8.01) in the pre-test and post-test, respectively. A paired t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group (t(19) = 4.39, p .05), suggesting that the REACT model had a positive impact on students' writing skills. These findings highlight the potential of the REACT model as an effective instructional approach for enhancing writing skills in university students.

Abstract

This study examines the unspoken challenges experienced by Asian mothers through the lens of Asian motherhood as depicted in literature. The research aims to investigate how cultural norms and societal expectations shape the roles and experiences of mothers in Asian societies. Employing qualitative research methods, specifically thematic analysis, this study interprets and classifies the unspoken challenges portrayed in three short stories from Indonesia, China, and Japan. The findings reveal three prominent themes: developing resilience, performing silent sacrifice, and facing individual conflicts. The mothers in these stories exhibit diverse coping strategies in response to the unacknowledged challenges they encounter. This study contributes to the understanding of the enduring nature of traditional gender roles and expectations in Asian societies, highlighting the need for greater recognition and support for mothers facing these unspoken challenges. The results underscore the importance of continued research and dialogue on the experiences of Asian mothers to promote gender equality and the well-being of women in these contexts. The insights gained from this study can inform future research, policy, and practice aimed at addressing the unspoken challenges faced by mothers in Asian societies and beyond.

Abstract

The phenomenon of regional language extinction, particularly in Indonesia, is clearly evident and experienced by the language users themselves. In order to prevent the extinction of regional languages, the government has long established a legal framework for regional languages in Indonesia. The Minister of Education has also introduced guidelines (Models A and B) for the revitalization of local languages, with the aim of preserving them in Indonesia. These guidelines are intended to support local governments in adopting strategies to maintain and preserve local languages. Consequently, researchers have shown interest in examining the role of the Regional Government of Nagan Raya Regency in preserving the local language. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews. The findings of this research indicate that 5 out of 6 approaches to regional language revitalization efforts have been implemented in line with the Language Development and Development Agency (2022). However, the Nagan Raya government has not yet implemented an immersion-based learning approach to language revitalization, as this program is still unfamiliar to them. Nevertheless, other approaches, such as one-day language practice, technology-based learning, religion, arts and culture, and creativity, have been successfully implemented.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis (CA) is crucial in discourse studies, focusing on everyday interactions. This study examines the conversational styles in the Indonesian talk show Endgame, hosted by Gita Wirjawan. Previous research on Indonesian talk shows has primarily explored speech acts and pragmatic aspects, with little emphasis on openings and closings. This study addresses that gap by applying CA to analyze these segments in "Endgame" episodes. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzes data from the four most-watched Endgame episodes as of November 2023. The findings reveal that Endgame adopts a high considerateness style, characterized by slow-paced dialogue, pauses, and minimal interruptions, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The opening starts by greeting viewers, introducing guests, and highlighting their roles, set as a preview to the following discussion. Meanwhile, the closings provide insightful messages, maintaining a relaxed ambiance. By examining adjacency pairs and interactional patterns, this study enhances understanding of how Endgame shapes its conversational style and engages its audience, contributing to broader discussions on media communication and talk show sociolinguistics.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze instances of symbolic violence, a concept introduced by Pierre Bourdieu, in the comic adaptation of the short story "Cinderella." Symbolic violence refers to the subtle, often invisible forms of domination and oppression embedded in social structures and practices. By employing a descriptive qualitative method and applying Bourdieu's theory, this research seeks to illuminate how power imbalances and social hierarchies are perpetuated through seemingly innocuous interactions and cultural norms. The findings reveal that Cinderella experiences various forms of symbolic violence, including acts of domination, excessive demands, favoritism, mockery, emotional manipulation, and the suppression of truth. These instances serve to maintain the status quo and reinforce power dynamics between Cinderella and her oppressors. By exposing these subtle yet pervasive forms of violence, this study contributes to the broader understanding of how symbolic violence operates in literature and society. The insights gained can inform future research on the representation of power dynamics in popular culture and the ways in which symbolic violence shapes social interactions and individual experiences. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of recognizing and challenging the hidden forms of oppression that often go unnoticed in daily life.

Abstract

In folktales, the act of labeling certain animals with certain traits is normal. However does it completely the truth? This paper then aims to examine the binary opposition and anthropomorphism within the three Asian folktales, The Quarrel of the Monkey and the Crab, The Turtle, and The Lizard,  and Sang Kancil counts The Crocodile as the characters within the story are labeled as opposite from each other and people commonly agree with that kind of labeling. In analyzing these three stories, this paper will use a qualitative method to gather the materials that are needed along with Strauss’s concept to examine the exclusive binary oppositions and their correlations with each other using syntagmatically and paradigmatically diagrams. For the anthropomorphism, it will use journals and websites that correlate with it. The result of this paper will uncover how binary oppositions and their relationship can create meaning and the possible reason why anthropomorphism happens and is often used within literature.
