Abstract

In an effort to effectively control rat pest populations, farmers have begun considering the use of active ingredients such as Zinc Phosphide and Brodifacoum, which are known to be effective in reducing pest impact. Farmers were provided with understanding and practical training on the use of Zinc Phosphide and Brodifacoum as part of a more systematic and targeted pest control strategy. This study aims to explore farmers’ understanding and practices in applying Zinc Phosphide and Brodifacoum, as well as to identify the challenges they face in implementation. The research method employed is the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, which emphasizes the active involvement of farmers as key partners in every stage of the research. In addition, the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach was used to explore the potential resources available within the community. The findings show that this research was conducted to identify farmers’ knowledge and practices related to the use of these two active ingredients. Furthermore, farmers also gained an understanding of the use of Brodifacoum as an active ingredient for controlling rat pests.

Abstract

Rodent infestations in rice fields have become a persistent and serious challenge for farmers in Desa Setail, Genteng, Banyuwangi. Various control methods such as the installation of owl house, the use of rodenticides, and fumigation have been applied, however, the results remain suboptimal. In response to this issue, KKN of the University of Jember 2025 collaborated with the Flamboyan Farmers’ Group and the Agricultural Extension Officer to introduce an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative known as Bubur California (BC). BC is a locally developed biopesticide formulated from sulfur and limestone, which has the potential to reduce rat populations while minimizing ecological risks compared to synthetic chemicals. The program was implemented through participatory learning approaches, including structured socialization sessions and hands-on demonstrations of BC production. These activities enabled farmers to directly engage in the process, thereby enhancing their technical skills and practical knowledge of sustainable pest management. The outcomes revealed strong enthusiasm among participants, reflected in active discussions and willingness to adopt BC in their farming practices. This initiative not only addressed the urgent problem of rat infestations but also promoted community empowerment by encouraging self-reliance and environmentally responsible agricultural practices. Consequently, the adoption of BC is expected to serve as a sustainable solution for rat pest management while simultaneously safeguarding environmental health and supporting long-term agricultural productivity in Setail Village.

Abstract

Pumpikatu Hamlet, Bulukumba Regency, has considerable potential in rice field areas, yet the management practices remain limited to conventional rice cultivation, resulting in relatively low productivity and farmer income. One promising alternative is the mina padi system, an integrated approach that combines rice cultivation with fish farming in the same field. This system not only improves agricultural output but also provides additional income from aquaculture. This community service program aimed to provide counseling and technical assistance to farmers in Pumpikatu Hamlet in order to enhance their understanding of the mina padi concept, improve cultivation skills, and promote more productive and sustainable land management. The methods included the delivery of extension materials, participatory discussions, technical simulations of land utilization, and direct assistance in the establishment of demonstration plots. The results indicated an increase in farmers’ knowledge regarding the benefits and application of the mina padi system, the development of positive attitudes and motivation to adopt the technology, and the initiation of trial implementation on group-managed rice fields as a demonstration model. Therefore, this program successfully broadened farmers’ perspectives on sustainable agricultural innovations and is expected to contribute to higher land productivity and improved community welfare.

Abstract

This extension and training activity aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in propagating the black ant (Dolichoderus thoracicus) as a natural enemy for the biological control of Helopeltis . on cocoa plants. The activity methods included field observation, collection of black ant colonies, construction of artificial nests, maintenance, and monitoring of colony development. Colony propagation was conducted using two types of artificial nests: plastic nests filled with dried cocoa leaves supplemented with sugar solution and shrimp paste, and coconut leaf sheath nests treated with sugar solution and shrimp paste bait. The results showed that black ants play an effective role as biological control agents. The presence of ant colonies around cocoa plants reduced Helopeltis populations through aggressive behavior that repelled and attacked the pests. Prior to propagation, the number and distribution of ant colonies were limited, resulting in suboptimal pest control. After colony propagation and relocation, the number and distribution of ant colonies increased and became more uniform. Plastic nests containing dried cocoa leaves were more rapidly colonized and supported stable colony growth. The use of black ants as biological control agents is environmentally friendly, low-cost, and easy to apply by cocoa farmers, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides.
