Abstract

This study aims to enhance learners’ speaking competence, as they have experienced various hindrances in acquiring speaking skill during English course. These hindrances include passive classroom environments, uninterested lessons, a lack of interaction, the dominance of the mother tongue over the target language, and other related issues. They found speaking to be challenging, especially for transactional and interpersonal purposes in their English course. As a consequence, the speaking class did not run smoothly. The target participants of this study were 2nd semester students from Technique Informative program at STMIK Pontianak in the Academic year 2024/2025, consisting of thirty students with varying levels of English proficiency. Classroom action research was the research design applied by the researcher, using group work as one of the Communicative language teaching (CLT) approach to assist learners overcoming their speaking difficulties. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods. It consisted of two cycles, with three meetings in each cycle. Then, the observation list and speaking tests were used as research instruments to gain data, which were then analyzed using Simple Regression in SPSS ver.25. The outcome clearly proves that group work within the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach significantly boosts learners’ speaking expertise, especially in using interactive language for transactional (delivering information) and interpersonal purposes (maintaining social connection) among learners during communication in the teaching and learning process, both inside and outside the classroom. This improvement is supported by observational data which show a shift in classroom dynamics—from teacher dominance in the first cycle to reduced teacher control and increased student interaction and participation in the second cycle, along with improved students’ speaking performance and also proved from the ANOVA table F is 26.852, sig. 0.00, means there is significant influence of group work of CLT approach in enhancing interactive purposes of learners’ speaking skill of target language

Abstract

Pronunciation plays a vital role in oral communication; yet, many Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) continue to face difficulties, particularly in articulating fricative consonants that are absent from their native language. This study investigates the pronunciation problems experienced by second-semester students of the English Department at Makassar Muhammadiyah University, with a specific focus on English fricative consonants. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were gathered through a pronunciation test, interviews, and audio recordings. The findings indicate that dental fricatives /θ/ and /ð/ are the most problematic, often substituted with /t/ and /d/ due to first-language interference and limited exposure to pronunciation models. Additional contributing factors include a lack of articulatory awareness, insufficient phonetic training, and minimal practice. These results suggest the need for more explicit instruction and guided pronunciation practice to improve learners’ phonological competence. The study provides practical insights for English instructors to enhance pronunciation-focused pedagogy and curriculum development

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that should be mastered by students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) where access to updated scientific information often requires a proper understanding of English texts. This research aimed at investigating the difficulties faced by Fish Processing Technology students in comprehending English reading texts which are relevant to their field. This was quantitative descriptive research where the data were collected through questionnaires and worksheets involving 20 second semester students. The research results show that 100% of the students have a lack of attention. Their focus is easily distracted while reading a text, especially English texts. Next, 95% of the students have limited knowledge of generic structure. They cannot understand the text's meaning because they do not know how to translate it grammatically. After that, 85% of the students faced difficulties in extracting the text meaning because of their lack of vocabulary mastery. They get a lot of unfamiliar words in the texts. Then, 75% of the students find obstacles in understanding the meaning of the text because they have no background knowledge about the text topic. 55% of the students have no motivation in reading, especially English texts. 50% of the students have limited working memories. Therefore, the researcher concluded that there are seven difficulties faced by the students, named attention, knowledge of generic structure, vocabulary, sentence comprehension, background of knowledge, motivation and working memory

Abstract

YouTube vlogs have become a popular platform for entertainment and informal learning, particularly for English vocabulary acquisition among teenagers. With the growth of technology, YouTube vlogs have been freely accessed by students. This platform is not only a source of entertainment, but also a means of authentic language input. Several studies have discussed how YouTube vlogs can influence language acquisition. However, students’ perceptions of YouTube vlogs as a tool for vocabulary learning are rarely explored. Students' perceptions can be a strong basis for developing new language learning methods. Therefore, this study examined seventh-grade students’ perceptions of the influence of YouTube vlogs on vocabulary acquisition. At this stage, students are typically curious and receptive to various forms of media, making it possible to capture students’ early impressions and attitudes. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, data were collected through observations and Likert-scale questionnaires. This approach allowed the researchers to identify students’ behaviors and perceptions regarding the use of YouTube vlogs during the vocabulary learning process. The results indicate that students perceive YouTube vlogs as effective for improving vocabulary comprehension, pronunciation, and usage in daily life. Additionally, the findings reveal that students demonstrate high levels of motivation towards the YouTube vlogs as a vocabulary learning tool.

Abstract

This study explores how frequently students listen to English songs and how it influences their ability to understand spoken language. The participants were second-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Bhinneka PGRI and applied a correlational quantitative approach. Data were gathered using two instruments: a structured questionnaire to measure students’ listening habits and a standardized listening comprehension test. A total of 21 students participated as respondents through a total sampling approach. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation formula. The results revealed a strong and statistically significant relationship between the frequency of listening to English songs and students' listening test scores (r = 0.981; p < 0.05). This suggests that students who regularly listen to English songs tend to demonstrate higher comprehension abilities. These findings support the acceptance of the study’s hypothesis. The research highlights the pedagogical potential of integrating music-based input into language learning and opens avenues for further exploration on how informal listening practices contribute to language development among EFL learners.

Abstract

Amid the increasing demand for emotionally resonant and learner-driven instruction in EFL contexts, this study offers a novel exploration of how Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) can transform vocabulary acquisition into an affective, immersive, and socially collaborative experience. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the research investigates the lived experiences of 13 second-semester EFL students at Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu as they engaged with gamified platforms such as Wordwall. Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, five key themes emerged: heightened learner interest, enhanced peer interaction, improved retention through contextual and repeated exposure, minor but manageable technological barriers, and deep emotional engagement throughout the learning process. The results indicate that DGBL not only supports cognitive aspects of vocabulary learning but also stimulates learners’ motivation, confidence, and autonomous behavior. These findings highlight the pedagogical potential of integrating digital games into EFL classrooms to enrich both the cognitive and emotional dimensions of language learning
