Abstract

According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) and Wikipedia, politics (from the Greek politikos, meaning “of, for, or relating to citizens”) is the process of forming and distributing power in society, including decision-making, particularly within the state, and represents an effort to combine various definitions known in political science as the art and science of achieving power through constitutional and non-constitutional means. Politics can be viewed from different perspectives: as citizens’ efforts to realize the common good (Aristotle’s classical theory), as the administration of government and the state, as activities aimed at gaining and maintaining power in society, and as the process of formulating and implementing public policy, all of which require understanding key elements such as political power,  legitimacy, political systems, political behavior, participation, processes, and the dynamics of political parties; meanwhile, Hans J. Morgenthau in Politics Among Nations defines politics as a struggle for power. Local wisdom, according to the KBBI, is the maturity of society at the local community level, reflected in attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives that support the development of local potential and resources (both material and non-material) as a force for realizing positive change and contributing to national strength for a more advanced and modern nation based on the ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.

Abstract

This conceptual study explores how theatre can enhance English vocabulary acquisition in second and foreign language contexts. While vocabulary is widely recognized as a foundational component of language proficiency, traditional instruction often overlooks the affective and embodied dimensions of learning. Grounded in Kolb`s Experiential Learning Theory and Krashen`s Second Language Acquisition Theory, the study examines how theatrical practices such as role-play, dramatization, and improvisation can foster emotionally engaging and socially interactive learning environments that promote meaningful vocabulary learning. Using a library-based methodology, the research analyzes literature published between 2015 and 2025. Findings show that theatre creates an emotionally supportive environment, facilitates embodied vocabulary learning and enhances learners’ ability to acquire vocabulary in contextualized ways. The study concludes that although there are challenges in the implementation, theatre can be a transformative tool for deepening learners` vocabulary knowledge and communicative competence when systematically integrated into English language education.

Abstract

This study examines junior high school students’ motivation in developing reading habits and identifies the supporting and hindering factors. A mixed-method design was applied, involving questionnaires completed by 64 students at SMPN 2 Sikur, as well as interviews and classroom observations. Findings revealed that most students demonstrated moderate (39.06%) to high (32.81%) levels of reading motivation, with an overall average of 3.15. Intrinsic factors, such as curiosity, enjoyment, and the desire for knowledge, emerged as the strongest drivers, while extrinsic factors, including encouragement from teachers and parents, played a role but inconsistently. Major obstacles included boredom, limited time, and difficulties in understanding texts, particularly in foreign languages. The school environment, such as poorly maintained libraries and the lack of literacy activities, was also found to be unsupportive. These results indicate that intrinsic motivation is crucial for fostering reading habits, yet it must be reinforced by external support and a conducive learning atmosphere. The study suggests revitalizing school literacy programs

Abstract

This study explores how the learning environment at Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School can be better leveraged to help students improve their English speaking skills. Through a qualitative case study, the researcher gathered insights from five eighth-semester English Education students using interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that structured language programs, peer collaboration, supportive teacher role models, and the use of English in religious activities all play a meaningful role in expanding students’ vocabulary, boosting their confidence, and sharpening their grammar awareness. Despite these positive factors, several challenges remain such as inconsistent enforcement of language rules, limited interaction with fluent or native speakers, and students’ anxiety about making mistakes when speaking. To make the most of the professional environment, the study highlights the need for stronger institutional backing, more engaged teachers, and increased opportunities for authentic speaking practice. Overall, the research shows that Islamic boarding schools hold strong potential as effective spaces for language development, especially within religious education contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the translation of exclamatory sentences spoken by the main character, Belly Conklin, in Jenny Han’s We’ll Always Have Summer, from English into Indonesian. Recognizing the pivotal role of exclamations in conveying emotions, cultural values, and pragmatic functions in literary works, this research addresses the gap in understanding how these elements are preserved during translation. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the analysis focuses on eleven exclamatory sentences, examining their emotional expressions based on Darwin’s theory (1872) and their cultural and pragmatic meanings through Yule’s pragmatics framework (1996). The findings reveal that most exclamations express joy, followed by anger and sadness, with many containing both cultural and pragmatic meanings. The study underscores the importance of contextual and cultural awareness in translation to accurately convey emotional and social nuances, providing valuable insights for translators and scholars in intercultural literary translation.

Abstract

Analysing the textbook is necessary to ensure its alignment with the goals that are promoted by the curriculum. This study aims to evaluate the alignment of the exercises in the Grow with English textbook for sixth-grade elementary school with the Merdeka Curriculum, focusing on Listening and Speaking elements in learning outcomes of Phase C (grades V and VI).  Employing a content analysis, the textbook was analysed based on a checklist rubric adapted from Akhmad et al. (2022). The research examines the textbook’s content relevance, language skills coverage, cultural appropriateness, visual design, grammar and vocabulary, and methodological approaches. Findings reveal the textbook partially fulfils the Merdeka Curriculum expectations but would benefit from enhanced intercultural integration, increased authenticity in tasks, and greater emphasis on project-based and autonomous learning to foster communicative competence and character development in learners. This research contributes to textbook evaluation and supports the improvement of English language instruction in primary education.

Abstract

The implementation of basic guidance and counseling services is essential to support student development in line with the Merdeka Curriculum's learner-centered approach. However, discrepancies remain between policy expectations and actual school practices, particularly in planning, delivery, and media integration. This study aims to examine how BK teachers implement basic counseling services and identify the challenges they encounter. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from seven BK teachers through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The findings reveal that while teachers engage in diagnostic assessments and collaborate with school stakeholders, they face obstacles such as limited infrastructure, time constraints, and unfamiliarity with curriculum principles. Media use and large-class guidance remain inconsistent. Nevertheless, teachers attempt to overcome these barriers through adaptation, collaboration, and reflective evaluation. The study concludes that effective implementation requires ongoing support, improved facilities, and targeted training for BK teachers.

Abstract

Developing employability-ready English speaking skills remains challenging and persistent in Indonesian vocational schools across contexts. This mixed-methods study investigated the effectiveness of ELSA, an AI-driven speaking app, embedded in a four-week blended course with two weekly 90-minute sessions for 30 Grade-11 Agribusiness students. Surveys (validated), CEFR-aligned observations, and interviews examined gains in pronunciation, fluency, confidence, and motivation, and documented implementation factors. Results show marked improvement in prosody, articulation, and extended turns; learners reported higher confidence, autonomy, and sustained engagement driven by real-time feedback, progress tracking, and gamified tasks. Skills transferred to vocationally authentic performances (e.g., product descriptions, customer service, job-interview simulations). However, efficacy depended on device availability, stable connectivity, digital literacy, and teacher mediation; freemium limits also constrained practice. The study concludes that ELSA-supported blended learning offers a practical, scalable model to strengthen oral proficiency and motivation in vocational EFL programs, provided institutions ensure equitable access, teacher support, and curricular alignment.

Abstract

This study investigates the types of presupposition found in the animated series How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge, using George Yule’s (1996) classification as a theoretical framework. Understanding presupposition—implied meaning that underlies spoken or written expressions—is essential to developing pragmatic competence in language. Through a descriptive qualitative method, this research identifies and categorizes presuppositional triggers in the film’s dialogues, aiming to reveal how implicit meanings contribute to the narrative and character development. A total of 28 utterances containing presuppositions were analyzed, and all six types identified by Yule were found: existential, factive, lexical, structural, non-factive, and counterfactual. Among these, existential presuppositions were the most frequently occurring, representing 25% of the data. Factive, lexical, and structural presuppositions followed, each comprising 17.8%, while non-factive and counterfactual presuppositions were the least common, each at 10.7%. These results highlight the significant presence of presuppositional meaning in animated film dialogue, indicating that such media can be rich sources for examining pragmatic elements in language use. The findings suggest that presupposition not only enriches character interaction and emotional depth but also supports narrative cohesion. This research emphasizes the pedagogical potential of animated content in teaching pragmatic concepts and encourages further exploration of presupposition across different genres, audiences, and communicative contexts.
