Abstract

This study aims to analyze the causes of stunting in toddlers in Nagari Rawang Gunung Malelo Surantih, Sutera District, Pesisir Selatan Regency. Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a serious public health challenge in Indonesia. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected over a period of two months, from June to July 2024, through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The study involved 10 informants, consisting of five parents of stunted toddlers, two village midwives, and three community leaders. The results show that stunting is caused by multiple interrelated factors: economic factors (poverty and limited purchasing power), cultural factors (inappropriate feeding practices and traditional beliefs), social factors (low education levels and early marriage), and environmental factors (poor sanitation and lack of clean water facilities). Addressing stunting requires a multi-sectoral approach, including strengthening public education, improving family economic welfare, and enhancing collaboration between the government, health workers, and the community.

Abstract

Enhancing students' speaking abilities requires integrating technology into language training, particularly in professional settings like tourism. For vocational high school (SMK) students working in the tourism industry, speaking is an essential skill because they must be able to interact with foreign tourists. The goal of this project is to create infographics based on CakeApp that will help Grade XII tourism students at Buleleng's vocational high schools learn how to speak. The study uses Richey Klein, (2005) Design and Development (DD) framework in conjunction with the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, Evaluation) model. The end result is a collection of infographics made to help teachers of English incorporate CakeApp into their speaking lessons. With an average score of 91.5%, expert validation results show that the infographics are of extremely high quality. These results imply that infographics based on CakeApp successfully improve students' speaking practice. From a practical standpoint, the product provides teachers at tourism vocational schools with an invaluable teaching tool.

Abstract

In bilingual societies, code-switching is a common linguistic practice that reflects both social identity and communicative style. Although numerous studies have examined code-switching in Indonesian podcasts, most have centered on domestic contexts, leaving limited attention to speakers living abroad. This study investigates code-switching in Beropini, a podcast by Gita Savitri Devi, to identify the dominant type of code-switching based on Poplack’s (2004) classification and to analyze its causal factors using Hoffmann’s (1991) framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through transcription, categorization, and researcher triangulation, the study identified 167 instances of code-switching: 163 intra-sentential, 3 tag-switching, and 1 inter-sentential. The main factors included expressing group identity (71 instances), talking about a particular topic (61), and repetition is used for emphasis (54), while other factors appeared less frequently. These findings demonstrate that code-switching in Beropini serves not only as a communicative strategy but also as a deliberate means of constructing bilingual identity within transnational digital discourse.

Abstract

The academic readiness of PAUD teachersis an important indicator in determining their success in participating in the Teacher Professional Education (PPG). The problem that arises is the lack of comprehensive mapping regarding the level of academic readiness of PAUD teachers, particularly in the context of implementing the PPG tryout. This study aims to analyse the academic readiness of PPG PAUD participants in 2025 based on the results of a tryout participated in by 388 respondents from various regions in Indonesia. The study population consisted of all PAUD teachers who participated in the PPG UM 2025 tryout, with a sample of 388 individuals selected through total sampling. The research method employed was a descriptive, quantitative approach with frequency distribution analysis techniques. The results showed that 76 respondents (19.59%) were in the low readiness category, 256 respondents (65.98%) in the medium category, and 56 respondents (14.43%) in the high category. These findings indicate that the majority of teachers are still at the medium level of readiness, which means the a need for further academic intervention strategies. Therefore, it is recommended that institutions that organize PPG PAUD strengthen their academic provision programs, especially in the form of clinical questions, structured tutoring, and improving pedagogical and professional competencies to support a better transition towards PPG.

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic review of scholarly literature published between 2015 and 2025 that explores narrative through a linguistic lens. The review aims to identify and synthesize major critical and theoretical frameworks applied to narrative studies within the field of linguistics. A total of 36 peer-reviewed studies were selected through comprehensive searches across major academic databases using keywords related to narrative linguistics, discourse analysis, and critical theory. The findings reveal four dominant categories of analysis: structuralist and formal linguistic frameworks, cognitive linguistic approaches, critical discourse analysis (CDA), and multimodal/digital narrative frameworks. While structuralist approaches focus on the formal organization of narrative elements such as syntax and coherence, cognitive frameworks emphasize the role of mental representation, conceptual blending, and embodiment in narrative comprehension. CDA-based studies investigate how narratives construct and challenge power relations, while multimodal approaches explore how meaning is shaped across verbal, visual, and digital modes. This review demonstrates a clear disciplinary shift toward integrative and socially responsive frameworks, reflecting the increasing complexity of narrative forms in contemporary communication. The study also identifies emerging gaps in cross-cultural perspectives and digital multimodal theory, suggesting directions for future research. By mapping recent developments in narrative theory from a linguistic standpoint, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how language constructs, conveys, and transforms stories across contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of formative and summative assessments in enhancing the speaking skills of sixth-semester EFL students at Hamzanwadi University. Although numerous studies have explored assessment practices in language learning, limited attention has been given to how both formative and summative assessments specifically influence EFL learners’ speaking performance in the Indonesian higher education context. To address this gap, the study employed a qualitative descriptive design, collecting data through questionnaires and interviews to explore students’ perceptions, experiences, and reflections regarding both assessment types. Findings reveal that formative assessment has a greater positive impact on speaking performance, offering regular feedback, progressive practice, and improved confidence while reducing anxiety. Summative assessment, while motivating, often induces stress, limits feedback, and may not fully reflect students’ actual abilities. The study concludes that formative assessment is more effective in supporting speaking development and recommends a balanced approach that emphasizes formative processes while using summative evaluation as a complementary measure.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of illness in The Fault in Our Stars directed by Josh Boone through a psychological perspective. Illness in popular media is often portrayed in a sentimental or stereotypical way, focusing on tragedy or victimhood. This research aims to show how the film frames illness as a meaningful and transformative human experience. The study applies a descriptive qualitative method by conducting close reading of film scenes and dialogues. The analysis is based on Arthur W. Frank’s typology of illness narratives, namely restitution, chaos, and quest. The findings indicate that illness in the film is not only depicted as a medical condition but also as a narrative that shapes identity, relationships, and philosophical views. The quest narrative appears most dominantly, reflecting how the main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, find meaning, agency, and emotional growth in the midst of suffering. In conclusion, the film resists stereotypical depictions of illness by presenting resilience, introspection, and authenticity in facing mortality. The novelty of this study lies in applying Frank’s illness narrative theory to film analysis, highlighting how cinematic storytelling can redefine illness as a source of meaning and personal growth.
