Abstract

This study investigated the difficulties encountered by both high- and low-achieving EFL students when finishing the  Duolingo English Test (DET) Free Practice Version. applying a qualitative descriptive comparative design, data information was gathered using semi structured conversations with five students. Results indicate that although the DET platform was initially perceived as accessible and supported by clear instructions, students still experienced linguistic, technical, and psychological challenges. Limited vocabulary and grammar, time pressure, spontaneous responses in speaking and writing, and unstable connections were the most frequently reported difficulties, especially among low-achievers. High-achievers appeared more confident and employed more effective strategies, enabling them to better adapt to the adaptive test format. These results suggest that achievement level influences how students cope with the demands of digital assessments. This research highlights the requirement for focused preparation and improved methods support to help EFL learners better navigate DET tasks.

Abstract

Aging is an inevitable natural process, an inseparable part of life's journey. As they age, elderly individuals are often faced with various challenges, both physically, biologically, psychologically, and socially. This research focuses on the phenomenon of declining psychological conditions of the elderly, which is often characterized by feelings of loneliness, helplessness, and loss of meaning in life. This feeling arises due to social limitations and the change in their role in the family and society. Abstract

This study investigates best practices in teaching English at elementary schools as implemented by alumni of the PPG Prajabatan Program from Sriwijaya University who currently teach in Palembang. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured written interviews with three PPG Prajabatan 2022 alumni who have one to three years of teaching experience at the elementary level. The study focused on identifying concrete teaching practices that support student engagement and language development in early EFL classrooms. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s procedures, including familiarization with the data, initial coding, theme development, and interpretation. The findings revealed three major best practices: differentiated instruction tailored to students’ readiness and learning styles, communicative and game-based learning to promote active language use, and flexible integration of multiple teaching approaches adjusted to classroom needs and lesson objectives. Rather than applying a single method, participants combined various strategies to create meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how professionally trained teachers translate pedagogical knowledge into classroom practice. Practically, the study offers insights for teacher education programs, particularly PPG Prajabatan, to strengthen reflective practice, instructional flexibility, and creativity in preparing future English teachers for elementary school contexts.

Abstract

Background: Mass media plays a crucial role in constructing political conflict discourse through discursive strategies that can influence public perception. The tension between West Java Governor and Regional Representative Council (DPRD) reflects complex local political dynamics where media construction becomes significant in shaping public opinion. Objective: This study aims to analyze how online media constructs the conflict between West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi and West Java DPRD through Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis approach, focusing on macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure in news texts. Method: This research employs qualitative descriptive method with critical discourse analysis. Population and Sample: The population consists of all online news texts discussing the conflict, with one representative news text selected through purposive sampling. Instrument and Data Analysis: The researcher serves as human instrument with Van Dijk analysis table covering three structural levels. Data analysis follows Van Dijk's model encompassing macro structure (topics and subtopics), superstructure (schematic), and micro structure (semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical). Results: The analysis reveals that online media is not neutral in constructing political conflict discourse, using pro-executive framing strategies, "us versus them" dichotomization, and active-passive sentence construction to strengthen executive dominance. Conclusion: Critical awareness of media discourse construction is essential for healthy democratic processes and balanced journalism practices.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many university students still face difficulties in understanding spoken texts, particularly in identifying specific information, grasping the main idea, and making inferences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using podcasts as a learning medium on students’ listening comprehension at the English Language and Education Study Program of the University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants consisted of 23 first-semester students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a listening comprehension test comprising 30 items measuring three indicators: specific information, gist, and inference. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to non-normal data distribution. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 47.22 in the pretest to 74.72 in the posttest. The statistical analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. These results demonstrate that podcast-based learning has a significant positive effect on improving students’ listening comprehension. Therefore, podcasts can be considered an effective supplementary medium for listening instruction in English language education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of academic stress among new students in the Electronic Engineering Technology Study Program at Batam State Polytechnic in the project-based learning (PBL) process. Academic stress often arises due to complex learning demands and significant changes in the learning environment for new students. The research method used was a quantitative descriptive design, involving 37 first-year student respondents. Data were collected through a questionnaire covering 10 aspects of academic stress. The results showed that most students (78.4%) experienced moderate stress, while the rest (21.6%) experienced low stress. The main factors causing stress included social anxiety (78.4%), time constraints (75.7%), and high task loads (70.3%). Meanwhile, dependence on teamwork (24.3%) and an unsupportive learning environment (29.7%) were the factors that caused the lowest levels of stress. These findings indicate that implementing PBL should be balanced with emotional support, effective time management, and faculty guidance to help new students adapt well.
