Abstract

Smoking activities in the house are still common among families in Indonesia. This behavior can reduce the quality of family members' health, and the smoke produced from smoking activities for a while can affect the quality of the physical environment in the house. The low knowledge of family members regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke is one of the factors causing delays in efforts to reduce exposure to cigarette smoke at the household level. Housewives have an important role in fighting indoor cigarette smoke. This activity aims to increase the role of mothers in fighting cigarette smoke, especially by increasing knowledge about the dangers of cigarette smoke and effective communication with the family.  The methods of implementing activities, include: 1) planning stages through community surveys to get an overview of the problem, 2) preparation with community leaders in preparing educational agendas and games, 3) implementation of activities by using power point media and flipcharts, and ranking 1 game which is used as the pretest process, and the final stage is, 4) evaluation of results by looking at the results of the pretest and posttest as well as process evaluation. The results of the activity obtained were an increase in the mother's knowledge regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke at home with an increase in the average pretest and posttest scores of the participants. The aspect of increased knowledge is that cigarette smoke cannot be described quickly in the house, because cigarette particles will stick to the surfaces of objects in the house for 4-6 hours. The limitations of the activity, there were a few technical obstacles to educational facilities and the psychological unpreparedness of some participants which were resulting in a lack of focus in discussion. Further research on the impact of smoking in the home still needs to determine the quality of health at the family level, and educational interventions based on behavior change are also needed for the primary target (active smokers) to create a smoke-free home at community level.

Abstract

Obesity among adolescents remains a major health issue in Indonesia. According to data from the 2018 Basic Health Research, 16.0% of adolescents aged 12-15 years and 13.5% of adolescents aged 16-18 years are overweight or obese. Low literacy in reading food labels and nutritional value information can influence the incidence of adolescent obesity. the aim of this activity is to increase teenagers' knowledge and attitudes towards reading food labels and understanding nutritional information on packaged foods, thereby potentially reducing the incidence of obesity in adolescents. The education activity involved 42 students who actively participated in the entire educational series. It was focus on providing participants with a comprehensive overview of food labels and nutritional information, as well as instructions on how to read and interpret nutritional value information on packaged foods. The topic was delivered through a 60-minute session using posters as the primary educational material. The effectiveness of the educational activity was measured using a pre-test and post-test questionnaire consisting of 5 closed-ended questions. The Wilcoxon statistical test indicated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test results, with a p-value of 0.004. The educational activity successfully enhanced the students' understanding of food labels and nutritional information. Future activities should focus on further improving students' skills in reading and applying this knowledge in their daily lives.

Abstract

Identifying diabetic patients with sensory disturbances that ultimately lead to diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) is very important. The data on Diabetes Mellitus patients in Batu Kumbung village in 2023 shows a total of 57 patients.  Based on the results of a preliminary study with 25 diabetes patients, it was found that 20 individuals (80%) reported symptoms of neuropathy, specifically tingling sensations in their feet, while 5 individuals (20%) did not complain of any tingling in their feet. Meanwhile, the knowledge and skills of the families of patients suffering from diabetes in detecting diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) early were all (100%) found to be lacking. The results showed a change in the knowledge of the families of patients in performing early detection of Diabetic Foot Ulcers, with those having insufficient knowledge decreasing from 15 individuals (75%) to having good knowledge increasing to 18 individuals (90%). The skills of families in performing early detection of Diabetic Foot Ulcers improved from insufficient skills in 20 individuals (10%) to good knowledge in 18 individuals (90%). For the foot health condition, the examination results showed that only 2 out of 10 people were at risk. After health condition training, none of the 20 diabetes patients experienced the risk of DFU (100%). Meanwhile, regarding blood sugar levels, out of 10 people, 5 (50%) had abnormal blood sugar levels, which increased to 15 people (75%) with normal blood sugar levels, leaving only 5 (25%) with abnormal blood sugar levels. Therefore, the role of the family is needed in monitoring health conditions, especially foot health, so that wounds in diabetes patients can be prevented.

Abstract

The "Disability Health Education" program was implemented by Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Malang at Posko Rescue Bela Negara, Karangduren, Pakisaji, Malang, May 23-25, 2024. The background of this program is to address the challenge of limited access to adequate health services for people with disabilities, who often face various obstacles in obtaining sufficient health education. The program aims to enhance knowledge and skills in five key areas: Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), healthy food, personal hygiene, basic life support, and emergency management. The methods used included lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. A total of 32 participants with disabilities participated in this program, accompanied by 10 students from the Applied Bachelor of Health Promotion, D-3 Health Insurance and the D-3 Medical Records and Health Information programs as facilitators. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the increase in knowledge and skills of the participants before and after attending the program. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in the average post-test scores compared to the pre-test scores for all the taught materials. The frequency distribution of scores indicated an increase in the homogeneity of understanding among participants after attending the program. Descriptive statistical analysis showed that the average pre-test scores ranged from 6.25 to 6.69, while the average post-test scores increased to 8.12 to 8.19. The decrease in standard deviation in most materials indicated a more homogeneous distribution of scores after the program. In conclusion, the "Disability Health Education" program successfully improved the participants' health knowledge and skills significantly. Active participation and positive feedback from participants demonstrated the effectiveness of the teaching methods used. This program can serve as a model for similar health education programs in the future to provide broader benefits for the community of people with disabilities.

Abstract

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease commonly found in India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, and Pakistan. According to the 2021 global report, Indonesia recorded 824,000 TB cases, but only 393,323 cases (48%) were detected, treated, and reported. In Bandar Lampung, with a population of 1,184,949 in 2021, there were 1,463 suspected TB cases in 2022. The case detection rate (CDR) in Bandar Lampung reached 40%, with a cure rate of 43.2% (1,153 patients). There were 48 deaths during treatment (1.8%). In Panjang District, which consists of eight sub-districts, 187 TB cases were identified, with a cure rate of 38.4%. Based on surveys and information from active TB cadres, poor medication adherence is a major factor in low cure rates. Patients often forget to take their medication or stop taking it once they feel better, increasing the risk of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The main challenges include a lack of active TB cadres as treatment supervisors (PMOs), the absence of training programs, and the unavailability of a logbook for monitoring treatment. The proposed solution involves recruiting active TB cadres, providing training, offering guidance, and supplying logbooks. The implementation method includes recruitment interviews, cadre training, and mentoring. Each TB cadre is responsible for five TB patients in the continuation phase of treatment. This community service program's outcome was forming a TB cadre group consisting of 10 PMOs in Panjang District. As a result of the cadres' efforts, 45 TB patients (90%) completed their treatment and were declared cured, 3 patients (6%) continued treatment at a referral hospital, and one patient (2%) passed away. This program highlights the vital role of cadres in improving pulmonary TB recovery rates.

Abstract

Pesticides are one of the toxic and dangerous chemicals (B3) and are persistent organic pollutants. If you use unsafe pesticides, it can affect a person's health. WHO estimates that around one million suffer pesticide poisoning every year. 11,000 would have fatal consequences. The mechanism of action of pesticides in the human body is to influence the work of enzymes and hormones and can damage tissue by inducing the production of serotonin and histamine. Pesticides are cytotoxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic for health and can be toxic to the reproductive system. Toxins in the reproductive system that are metabolized will enter the ovaries and cause the cells in the ovaries to become damaged. Pesticides can also cause decreased fertility, hormonal imbalance, damage to the germinal epithelium, genetic changes in men, exposure during the preconception period resulting in an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, slow fetal growth and premature birth. The aim is to increase the knowledge and skills of Village Health Cadres regarding the dangers of pesticide exposure to reproductive health The methods used are lectures, demonstrations, pre and post tests. Pre and post with 20 questions about the dangers of pesticide exposure for health. The participants were 35 health cadres from Mojodeso Village, Kapas District, Bojonegoro Regency; the results of the most 18 (51.4%) training participants' knowledge during the post-test were in the very good category. All participants (100%) were able to provide counseling to 75 families in the good category

Abstract

Early prevention of stunting is essential to avoid long-term adverse impacts. Efforts to prevent stunting should begin as early as possible, particularly targeting women of reproductive age who are preparing for pregnancy, so that the first 1000 days of life (HPK) for the child can be optimally supported. In addition to stunting, cancer is also a significant public health concern that needs attention. Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. Both of these health problems — stunting and cancer — can actually be prevented through the consumption of nutritious food. The purpose of this community service activity was to provide education on stunting and cancer prevention based on local wisdom. The methods used in this activity included health education on nutritious menu planning, demonstrations of healthy food preparation, and the provision of information on stunting and cancer prevention. The result of this community service activity showed an increase in public knowledge regarding the prevention of stunting and cancer. It is recommended that community participation continues to be enhanced through collaboration with healthcare workers and local government. This collaboration is crucial to continuously remind and encourage residents to consume a balanced and nutritious diet as a collective effort in improving public health.

Abstract

Teenagers are the next generation of a nation, who are expected to be the bearers of the baton of a country's development in achieving national prosperity. Health issues are very important, especially for teenagers. Many adolescent nutritional problems occur due to incorrect nutritional behavior, such as an imbalance between nutrition and recommended nutritional adequacy. Lack of energy and protein affects the body, resulting in obesity, chronic energy deficiency (malnutrition) and anemia. A preliminary study through an initial examination of 17 female adolescents at MA Yasrama, found that 2 people (11.7%) had severe anemia, 11 people (64.7%) had moderate anemia and 4 people (23.5%) had mild anemia. Apart from that, there were 8 teenagers who were classified as thin and had a height of <150 cm. The purpose of implementing this Community Service (PKM) activity is to create teenagers who care about their own health, are responsive to unhealthy behavior and are able to prevent and overcome their health problems independently so that the health level of teenagers can improve. This is done through activities to identify health problems in adolescents, education and assistance regarding healthy living behavior in adolescence as well as peer training and at the end of the activity, monitoring and evaluation of the results of these activities are carried out. This community service activity was carried out from April 2024 to September 2024, involving 30 female youth participants at MA Yasrama, Baratan Village, Jember Regency.
