Abstract

Hypertension is a medical condition where blood pressure surpasses the normal range, defined by a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or higher and a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or higher. According to WHO data from 2023, the global prevalence of hypertension was 33%, while in Indonesia, it stood at 34.11%. The high prevalence of hypertension raises concerns about more severe complications, such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. This study aimed to provide health education regarding hypertension and its treatment. The methodology began with a pretest questionnaire, followed by educational sessions using the lecture method and leaflet media, and concluded with a posttest questionnaire. The study results indicated that education on hypertension utilizing the lecture method and leaflet media significantly improved the public's level of knowledge (p < 0.05), with an increase of 18.60%. The health promotion and education about hypertension to the society is effective to increase the knowledge level, and may decrease the cardiovascular events in the future.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) can hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Posbindu involves the community's participation in conducting early detection activities and monitoring of NCD risk factors, carried out in an integrated, routine, and periodic manner. Integrated NCD risk factors (heart and vascular disease, diabetes, acute obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer) as well as disorders due to accidents and acts of domestic violence are managed by the community through integrated guidance. These activities combine Posbindu activities to prevent NCDs, anemia, and Chronic Energy Deficiency (CHD) in women in accordance with the direction of Indonesia's Health Transformation. CHD is a condition in which a person's nutritional status is poor and they experience chronic malnutrition that causes health problems. Pregnant women with CHD are at risk of stunting babies. The aim is to empower the community through Posbindu and prevent NCDs, anemia, and CHD. Capillary blood tests using strips revealed that 16.7% of the participants suffered from anemia, 20% had high blood sugar, 23.3% had high cholesterol, and 36.6% had high uric acid levels. At the same time, upper arm circumference measurements revealed that 6.7% had CHD, and blood pressure measurements showed that 40% had hypertension, as a recommendation to integrate anemia and CHD screening into Posbindu activities.

Abstract

Complementary feeding (MPASI) is additional food used to meet the growth and development needs of babies under 5 years old after 6 months. Complementary feeding given early to babies before the age of 6 months has the risk of causing stunting. Early provision of complementary feeding to babies under 6 months of age in Tangsil Wetan Village, Bondowoso Regency is 16.5%. Bondowoso Regency is one of the areas in East Java with a high prevalence of stunting in 2024 of around 32%. This community service activity aims to provide education on providing innovative complementary feeding to mothers of toddlers in Tangsil Wetan Village to prevent stunting. This community service activity uses lecture, question and answer, and demonstration methods. Participants who participated in the counseling activities were given a pretest and a posttest to measure their level of knowledge. The pretest and posttest results showed that mothers' knowledge after being given counseling increased significantly (p<0.05). In addition, demonstrating the right MPASI menu texture according to the toddler's age in this community service activity can be a preventive effort against stunting incidents in Tangsil Wetan Village.

Abstract

One of the key performance indicators (KPI/IKU) of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science and Technology is IKU 5: community recognition of lecturers' research outcomes. The PPUPIK-UNHAS community service program aimed to promote lecturers' innovative products for broader public recognition. In this community service initiative, we introduced an instant ginger-based beverage (Zingiber officinale), developed by modifying the traditional Sarabba drink with bee pollen. Ginger is well known for its health benefits, including antioxidant properties, improved digestion, pain and inflammation relief, enhanced immunity, and preventing nausea and vomiting. Including bee pollen—rich in amino acids, flavonoids, B vitamins, and minerals—further enhances the drink's functional health effects. The resulting product, Ginger Creamy Plus, was formulated as an instant drink, with each sachet containing 1.2 g of ginger and 0.3 g of bee pollen. This innovation has been registered with HAKI under the simple patent category and has received a P-IRT business permit. It is expected to be commercialized on an industrial scale in collaboration with UNHAS business units and registered with the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency.

Abstract

Tanaman Obat Keluarga (TOGA) are a valuable local resource that can be cultivated as an alternative approach to maintaining family health independently. However, public knowledge and practical skills related to the types of TOGA and proper cultivation techniques remain limited. This community service program aimed to improve community awareness and skills in cultivating TOGA within household environments. The program was implemented through socialization activities using educational pamphlets, instructional videos, and interactive door-to-door discussions across three target areas: urban settlements, rural villages, and residential complexes. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in participants' knowledge of TOGA varieties. Before the program, only about 40% of participants were familiar with more than five types of TOGA, which increased to 85% after the socialization activities. Furthermore, over 75% of participants could correctly describe the basic steps of TOGA cultivation, and approximately 60% of households had already begun planting TOGA in their yards or using simple containers such as pots and polybags. Evaluation also revealed strong enthusiasm and active involvement, as evidenced by participants' engagement in discussions and their initiative to form small groups for continuous TOGA development. In conclusion, this community service activity successfully enhanced participants' knowledge, skills, and motivation to cultivate TOGA. The program is expected to contribute to long-term community self-reliance in herbal-based health maintenance and foster the establishment of sustainable TOGA communities within local neighborhoods.

Abstract

Breast cancer remains a major health concern and one of the top causes of mortality among women in Indonesia. Breast Self-Examination (BSE), or SADARI, is a simple yet vital method for early detection. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of leaflet-based education in increasing adolescent girls’ understanding of SADARI. The program was conducted in Dusun Glagah Kidul RT 02, Klaten, involving 30 female participants aged 10 to 20 years. The intervention included interactive educational sessions and hands-on demonstrations using a breast model, with knowledge assessed through pre- and post-tests. Data analysis employed the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test due to non-normal data distribution. Findings revealed an increase in average test scores from 7.70 (pre-test) to 9.27 (post-test), with a significance level of p = 0.000. This indicates a statistically significant improvement in knowledge following the intervention. Leaflet-based education proves to be an effective strategy for raising awareness of early breast cancer detection among adolescent girls.
