Abstract

This paper is concerned with integral citation employed by English students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung in their Final Project Reports (FPR). Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the most integral citation type used by the students in their FPR. In conducting the study, 18 FPR focusing on analysis produced in 2022 were collected as data source. Applying qualitative method and text analysis, the results reveal several things. First, the students favor integral citation than non-integral citation. Second, verb controlling appears more than naming. In verb controlling citation, lexical verb state is commonly used compared with other lexical verbs. Whereas in naming, the phrase according to + the cited authors is the mostly used. this study has implication in improving the students’ academic skills, especially in doing citation.

Abstract

This study is aimed to identify phrases and clauses containing figurative language in Tame Impala’s song lyrics. The theory of figurative language used in this study is the one proposed by Mezo (metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, synecdoche, hyperbole, and litotes). A qualitative method through a document analysis strategy was applied to this research. The object of this analysis is based on the lyrics of Tame Impala's songs on the four albums, including Innerspeaker (2010), Lonerism (2012), Currents (2015), and The Slow Rush (2020). The result shows that the most common figurative language found in Tame Impala’s song lyrics is Metaphor (38%), Simile (21%), and Personification (19%). It indicates that most of the song lyrics of Tame Impala visualize comparisons and deepen understanding so that it makes readers increase their critical thinking as well as see old things in new ways.

Abstract

This final project examines an error in the use of determiners identified in the student's final project report. The analysis is based on data from 20 previous final project reports published between 2018 and 2023. A descriptive-qualitative method was used for this project. The data related to sentences were identified using the Dulay taxonomy technique and categorized based on determiners. The study revealed that students in 2018 made more errors compared to students in 2023. The most common incorrect usage of determiners was in the form of articles (84 data), followed by quantifiers (3 data), demonstratives (1 data), and possessives (1 data). According to the findings, students struggled the most with the usage of articles in English writing. They did not seem to have any difficulty using demonstratives, possessives, or quantifiers. The error in the use of determiners resulted in modifications to the determiners. There are five forms of modifications to determiners: addition, omission, misordering, and misformation. The majority of errors were omissions, totaling 58, all of which were in the form of articles, followed by addition (22 errors) and misformation (8 errors). The findings indicate that the majority of students tend to omit articles from their writing.

Abstract

This study investigates the occurrence of ellipsis and substitution in spontaneous spoken language. By employing the textual qualitative method, the study analyzed 106 conversational texts obtained from videos on the Jubilee YouTube channel. The research reveals that speakers frequently use ellipses and substitutions in their spontaneous spoken language to establish cohesion in their utterances. Nominal ellipsis has the highest occurrence with 50 data across all forms (nominal, verbal, and clausal ellipsis as well as nominal, verbal, and clausal substitution), indicating speakers’ propensity to avoid repetition, especially in nominal elements. Meanwhile, in terms of substitution, speakers are more likely to substitute their verbal elements, forming verbal substitution (occurred in 17 cases), in order to form variance in their utterances. This study provides fruitful significance, both theoretical and practical, and they will be further explained in this article.

Abstract

This study comprehensively analyzes the relationship between learning motivation and English language learning outcomes among EFL students. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the research examines the distinct motivational profiles of students, identifies prevalent patterns and trends, and offers practical insights for educators and curriculum developers in higher education. The study identifies intrinsic and extrinsic motivations as two key factors influencing students' academic performance in English language studies. Notably, the findings indicate that extrinsic motivation, encompassing external incentives such as rewards or recognition, demonstrates a stronger correlation with students' academic achievements compared to intrinsic motivation. The research underscores the significance of understanding and leveraging these motivational factors to enhance English language teaching strategies and student learning experiences. By integrating awareness of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations into educational practices, educators, and policymakers can foster a supportive learning environment conducive to improved student success and proficiency in English language acquisition. This study contributes valuable insights for enhancing pedagogical approaches to optimize academic outcomes in English language education.

Abstract

This study analyzed types of sentences used in five fashion articles from Elle Magazines. The data were taken purposively from different publications, which were from October 2023 until March 2024. The aims of this study were to analyze the use of sentence types and to identify the most used sentence types in Elle Magazines. This study applied Oshima & Houge’s theory to analyze types of sentences. The method used in this study was qualitative method since the data were in the form of texts. Simple calculation was used to identify the frequency of each type of sentence found. The process of analysis involved identifying the clauses to determine sentence types based on Oshima & Hogue’s theory. The findings showed that complex sentences are mostly used in the magazines, which had 45.7%, followed by simple sentences 28.6%, compound-complex sentences 17.1% and compound sentences 8.6%. The findings of this study may have significant implications both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the findings can enhance grammar knowledge and provide English students’ chance to deepen their skill especially in creative writing.  Practically, this study contributes editorial writers’ understanding of sentence types to make informed choices about how to successfully express their message to their target audience.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing transposition techniques and the translation quality of the Indonesian subtitle of Knives Out Movie. Subtitles are needed in the entertainment industry, particularly to translate narratives and dialogues, for viewers understanding although the grammatical rules between source and target language are different. This study aims to identify the most dominant type of transposition techniques, and to assess the accuracy and acceptability aspect of the translation quality. This research uses qualitative methods. There are 413 data of Indonesian subtitles applied transposition techniques. The most dominant type is structure shift with 37.31% of the data followed by unit shift with 33.18% of the data, intra-system shift with 22.03% of the data, class shift with 4.12% of the data, and level shift with 3.39% of the data. Shifts occurred because of the grammatical differences between the source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian). For the translation quality assessment, the final score is 2.83, which means the Indonesian subtitles that apply transposition techniques are accurate and acceptable. There are 90% accurate translations and 10% less accurate translations. For acceptability, there are 88% acceptable translations and 12% less acceptable translations. This analysis can enrich research in translation studies and serve as a reference or additional material for the Translation course.

Abstract

Google Translate has gained popularity due to some improvements to produce accurate translations since 2016. However, there is an on-going debate over the accuracy of Google Translate products. In response to this issue, the current study investigates how Google Translate interprets source language, particularly relative clauses into target language and how accurate the translation products are. This study used a qualitative case study. Moreover, the study used some chapters from an engineering textbook together with their translation version as primary data. The data in the form of relative clauses were put on a table side by side. It was then analysed and evaluated using a comparative method to find out similarity and differences. The study found that dominantly current Google Translate uses literal and expansion techniques. Furthermore, the findings suggest that GT produces accurate translation when translating relative clauses.

Abstract

The study explores students' perceptions of using the Wordwall application for reading assessment in an eleventh-grade AB-1 English class at SMAN 1 Gondang Wetan. It highlights the importance of reading in English learning and how technology can boost engagement and comprehension. Wordwall, an interactive online platform, allows teachers to create engaging quizzes and activities, making learning more dynamic and enjoyable. English reading skills are crucial for understanding texts, expanding vocabulary, and improving communication. In Indonesian high schools, reading assessment covers comprehension, inference, analysis, and student responses. Traditional methods often result in student struggles due to uninteresting materials and lack of innovation. Wordwall addresses these issues by offering interactive and engaging activities through various templates. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires covered the utility of Wordwall, students' enjoyment of reading on it, its effectiveness as a reading examination medium, and students' motivation. The findings showed a majority of students perceived Wordwall positively, with many agreeing it effectively examined reading skills and increased engagement. Students appreciated its accessibility and the variety of features, though some found the timer in quizzes challenging. In conclusion, the study found Wordwall to be an effective tool for reading assessment, enhancing engagement, flexibility, and providing diverse learning features. The positive student perceptions highlight the value of integrating digital tools into education. Future research should explore its broader application in developing other language skills and its comparative effectiveness against other educational technologies.

Abstract

This present study aims to observe: (1) the translation strategies used to translate phrasal verbs from English into the Indonesian language based on Baker’s theory; and (2) the translation assessment of phrasal verbs focusing on the accuracy and acceptability aspect based on Nababan’s parameter. This study is classified as a descriptive qualitative because the data consists of a lingual unit, specifically phrasal verbs. The analysis is also supported by simple calculations to determine the frequency and percentage of each translation strategy and its accuracy and acceptability. The data source is a Line Webtoon digital comic entitled Lore Olympus which analyzes the English and Indonesian phrasal verbs translation. The results show as follows: (1) there are only three translation strategies used, namely paraphrasing (95%), omitting the entire idiom (3.3%), and omitting a play on idiom (1.7%). (2) The translation of phrasal verbs is mostly considered accurate (93.3%) and fully acceptable (100%). Based on the findings, it implies that the translator of a digital comic Lore Olympus should prioritize paraphrasing strategies to maintain accuracy and acceptability when translating phrasal verbs from English into Indonesian.
