Abstract

This study examines the application of foreignization and domestication strategies in translating the bilingual profile book of POKDARWIS ‘Big Farmer,’ a community-based tourism organization of Desa Kertawangi, West Bandung, Indonesia. Utilizing Venuti’s translation framework (1995), this research identifies how the two strategies are employed to present Culture-Specific Items (CSI) as categorized by Espindola (2005) to both Indonesian and English-speaking audiences, enhancing cross-cultural understanding and promoting tourism. Through qualitative analysis, the findings reveal a tendency of foreignization strategy to preserve cultural uniqueness and a minor amount of domestication to ensure clarity and readability for international readers. The study highlights the importance of adapting cultural terms and region-specific references to maintain both authenticity and accessibility in translation. This research contributes to the broader discussion on translation practices in tourism and cross-cultural communication, suggesting that a mixed approach allows for effective cultural representation while accommodating the target audience’s familiarity. The results have implications for translation studies, especially in bilingual materials for community-based tourism.

Abstract

The use of conjunctions is important to create cohesiveness and also enhance coherence to the text or article that make the readers ease to understand the idea of the text/article. Furthermore, the careful application of conjunctions enhances readability and expresses the meaning effectively. Thus, understanding the use of conjunctions is essential for clear understanding and comprehension. However, EFL (English as Foreign Language) learners, especially in Indonesia, still struggle with the use of proper conjunctions. This study focused on analyzing the use of conjunctions in the articles published in Wired Magazine. This aimed to show how conjunctions are used in texts, especially text in magazines. This study used qualitative method and which focused on four types of conjunctions: coordinating, subordinating, correlative, and conjunctive. The result showed 614 conjunctions were found includes 410 coordinating conjunctions, 159 subordinating conjunctions, 34 conjunctive conjunctions, and 11 correlative conjunctions. The data showed that coordinating conjunction is the most frequently used conjunction.

Abstract

This study investigates the English language competence of students enrolled in the Sailing Bali Cruise Line and Hospitality program, with a particular focus on their use of grammatical cohesion based on the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Drawing on Halliday and Hasan’s theory of grammatical cohesion, the research analyzes students' written texts in which they were asked to articulate their reasons for choosing to study at The Sailing Bali. Employing a qualitative research design informed by grounded theory, this study aims to contribute to the development of SFL in the context of English language education for vocational purposes. The analysis reveals that students demonstrated limited use of cohesive devices, particularly in the category of conjunctions. Their writing frequently employed elaboration conjunctions such as first, second, third, and fourth to list reasons for pursuing careers in the cruise line industry. Personal reference—specifically speaker roles such as I, me, and my—was dominant, reflecting students’ personal motivations. Notably, substitution and ellipsis were absent across all texts analyzed. Two major findings emerged: (i) students predominantly used simple clauses, indicating limited syntactic complexity; and (ii) their English proficiency appeared to align with the basic communicative demands of cruise line employment. This research offers pedagogical implications for English language teaching, particularly in the domains of semantics and discourse analysis. It also highlights the potential for SFL to be applied in vocational language education and encourages further research in this area. Moreover, the findings provide valuable input for The Sailing Bali in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its language training programs.

Abstract

A woman needs cosmetics which is why the researchers are concerned for and care about it. Therefore, the research used multimodal analysis theory by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) for visual text, generic structure potential (GSP) theory by Cheong (2004), and meta functions of language such as ideational, interpersonal, and textual by (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) for verbal text in an ad. The result of the multimodal analysis of the Mustika Ratu advertisement is described in visual coupled with written text. In other words, the goal of this study is to describe the structure of multimodal analysis found in the advertisement. To achieve the research's goal, descriptive qualitative research was used. The source data, which is a print advertisement, was gathered via Google Images, and then reading the text attempted to analyze the advertisement, classifying and analyzing the data according to the verbal and visual texts. Finally, the researchers discovered that the structure of the verbal texts with a sly move (Announcement, Enhancer, Emblem) and the visual texts (Lead, Display, Tag, and Emblem) in the advertisement determines how they can attract and persuade viewers.

Abstract

Semantic mapping is a widely recognized strategy in English language learning, particularly in the development of writing skills. Despite its proven effectiveness, limited attention has been given to its use at the pre-writing stage, especially in paragraph writing. This study aims to explore the perspectives of both teachers and students on the application of semantic mapping during the pre-writing phase and to identify the benefits and challenges associated with its implementation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving two teachers and seventeen students from Muhammadiyah Junior High School in Gorontalo City. The findings revealed that both teachers and students held positive views about using semantic mapping before writing. They reported various benefits, although they also faced several challenges, particularly related to time constraints and students’ preparedness. The results of this study suggest that semantic mapping remains a valuable instructional tool that can be further developed and effectively integrated with emerging educational technologies.

Abstract

Lexical cohesion can be found in both written and spoken texts. It is critical because it is a device to make text cohesive and coherent. Consequently, lexical cohesion serves as an indicator to measure whether a text is cohesive or coherent. However, using lexical cohesion appropriately is challenging, especially for non-native English learners. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to analyze lexical cohesion found in spoken text. This study applied qualitative method and the data were collected from five podcasts of The Global Story podcast by the BBC World Service YouTube channel. In analyzing the data, the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Paltridge (2022) was applied. The results reveal that all types of lexical cohesion, such as repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation are found in the data. Among them, collocation is the most frequently used. Moreover, lexical cohesion in podcasts shows its essential role in maintaining coherence and facilitating comprehension in spoken text. These findings can be used as the reference for improving the vocabulary of non-native English learners, especially for spoken use.

Abstract

Captions are one of the most important elements in social media because they can provide context, add narrative, or engage the audience with the posted content. However, captions that are written sometimes do not comply with the language rules used. This study aims to identify the kinds of grammatical and mechanical errors found in the captions of LIUNIC ON THINGS. The study applied theories from Dulay, Burt, and Krashen's Surface Strategy Taxonomy (1982), Warriner and Griffith (1973), and Mitchell (2008). This study applied a document analysis method; the process of reviewing and evaluating documents both printed and electronic in a methodical manner. This method is useful for identifying, categorizing, analyzing, and interpreting physical data to gain understanding and come to a conclusion. From the data collection, it was found that there were 66 grammatical errors and 61 mechanical errors in 50 captions released in 2022. The results revealed that the grammatical errors found in its Instagram caption are 63.6% of misformation, 25.8% of omission, 6.1% of misordering, and 4.5% of addition. The mechanical errors, on the other hand, are 50.8% of punctuation errors, 44.3% of capitalization errors, and 4.9% of spelling errors. It can be seen that misformation is the most common grammatical error, and punctuation is the most common mechanical error. The result of this study is expected to be used as one of the evaluation resources for social media caption makers to prevent the occurrence of grammatical and mechanical errors.

Abstract

The study intends to investigate the use of nominalization in The Psychology of Money book by Morgan Housel. Specifically, the purposes of this study are to (1) identify the types of nominalization used in “The Psychology of Money” book, and (2) identify the types of suffixes used to form the nominalization. The qualitative method was employed to explain the types of nominalizations using Halliday’s theory and the types of suffixes using Quirk’s theory. The data of this analysis were obtained from the first ten chapters of The Psychology of Money book. The results show that there are 864 nominalization words used in the book. The most dominant type (737 cases) is verb-to-noun nominalization and the rest (127 cases) is adjective-to-noun. All types of suffixes are used to create the formation of both verb-to-noun and adjective-to-noun. The findings contribute to enriching the knowledge of grammar, especially nominalization. Besides, it practically can be used for teaching and writing references.

Abstract

This research focuses on the swear words on Instagram because so many swear words can be found on social media. The Instagram @lilnasx account is one of the examples gets swear words from social media users, especially since he is famous. This research used qualitative research method to analyze swear words in Instagram comments column of @lilnasx account taken from June to September 2022. This research showed that there are four types and five functions of swear words. The types of swear words found are one dysphemistic, 30 idiomatically, 31 abusively, and 38 emphatically from 100 comments. Meanwhile, the functions of swear words found are 23 abusive, 19 humoristic, 20 expletive, three euphemistic, and 35 habitual from 100 comments.

Abstract

In the era of technological advancement, generation Z, especially those who are accustomed to using Instagram, is significantly affected by the development of social media. This research focused on efforts to carefully identify dominant errors in students' text recount writing, especially in the caption section on the Instagram platform, as well as offer solutions to overcome their difficulties in writing this type of text. The method that used is a qualitative descriptive method where researchers give writing tasks to students to analyze and identify errors in their writing. In addition, interviews were conducted with two English teachers to get effective solutions in overcoming students' difficulties. In analyzing the data, the researchers refer to Brown's theory of misclassification, such as misformation, addition, omission, and misordering, which are then categorized into fossilized error and improved error. The results of the analysis showed that students tended to make misformation mistakes dominantly. Teachers provide solutions by repeating material until understanding is achieved, giving repeated exercises, and providing evaluations of students' writing, in the hope that the evaluation process can correct errors in their writing, The evaluation process can correct errors in their writing. It is expected that students will not only correct their mistakes but can also improve overall writing skills, creating a more meaningful learning experience.
