Abstract

Collocation is a pair of group that often used together. This research aims to describe the types of lexical collocation of political news in the jakarta post. Lexical collocation is the object of this research. The subject of this research is political news in the Jakarta Post Newspaper published on 19 May – 28 May 2020. It consists of 5 news.The researcher took all of the news about politics published on 19 May 2020 – 28 May 2020. The result of this study found 27 lexical collocations,divided into 7 types of lexical collocation. The most dominantly is L3 adjective + noun type, the percentage shows 14 times or 51,9%, the second one is L5 noun + noun type, the percentage shows 8 times or 29,7 %,next one is L1 verb + noun/ pronoun type, the percentage show 3 times or 11,2%, then L2 verb + noun and L4 noun + verb types found 1 time or 3,8 %, both of them have same percentage. The last L6 adverb + adjective and L7 Verb + adverb type not found lexical collocation in the Jakarta Post Newspaper. Furthermore based on the findings, it can be concluded that type L3 adjective + noun is the dominant or highest percentage than all of the patterns.

Abstract

Directive speech acts is the kind of speech acts which is used by the speaker toget someone else to do something. This research analyzes Directive speech acts in Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Script by Josh Miller. The aim of this research is to find out the kinds and forms of directive speech acts in Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Script. Directive speech acts is the object of this research. Sonic the hedgehog movie script (2020) by Josh Miller is the subject of this research. Descriptive qualitative is a method of this research. The result of this research shows that five types of directive speech acts using Searle theory. The result of this research indicates thatthere are 82 utterances of directive speech acts. The researcher classify directive speech acts and divide into five including 54 commands, 11 request, 9 suggest, 6 warning and 2 inviting. Therefore, the researcher classifies directive speech acts that found into three forms they are 52 data imperative, 10 data interrogative and 20 data declarative. The researcher concludes that command and imperative is the dominant utterance of directive speech acts.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research was aimed to (1) Explain how the phrasal verbs distribute to the text; (2) Calculate the number and percentages of the phrasal verbs found in the text. The subject of this research was PREMISE Journal of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Metro Volume 8 Number 1. Afterward, the object of this research was the phrasal verbs which found in abstracts of PREMISE Journal. The data were collected by observing the journal which consisted of several phrasal verbs. After that, the collected data were analyzed by identifying, categorizing and calculating the data. Eventually, the result shows that not all types of phrasal verbs available in the abstracts. The total numbers of phrasal verbs in the abstract were 37; consist of 28 non-separable types and 20 transitive types. Then, the percentages from each type shows 28 times or 76% for non-separable type and transitive type arise 20 times or 54.1%. The researcher did not found transitive and separable type in the text. Lastly, the researcher concluded that the dominant phrasal verb in the text is non-separable phrasal verb.

Abstract

Characterization is an important part of building a story. Implicit meanings and moral values ​​are also intrinsic elements in the movie, just like characterizations. This research analyzes The Portrayal Of The Arthur’s Character, Implicit Meaning and Moral Value Found In Joker Movie (2019). The aim of this researh is to explore the portrayal of Arthur character, to describe the implicit meaning and find out the moral value. The object of this research is Arthur’s character, implicit meaning and moral value. Joker (2019) is the subject of this research. Descriptive qualitative is a method of this research.The result of this research showed that 8 Arthur’s characters using Boggs theory,15 implicit meanings and based on Linda and Eyrc theory the researcher found 9 moral values. Moral value can be divided into two groups as follow: value of being, which include values of being arehonesty, courage, peace ability, self - reliance and potential, self discipline and moderation, and also fidelity and chastity. Then value of giving, which include values of giving are: loyalty and dependability, respect, love, unselfishness and sensitivity, kindness and friendliness, and also justice and mercy.

Abstract

Code-mixing is the use of two different languages in a sentence without changing the topic. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of code-mixing utilized in students speaking and to know the factors of code-mixing mostly occurred in students speaking. Due to covid-19, the researcher collects the data by using Triangulation: Participant Observation, In-depth Interview and Documentation through Zoom and WhatsApp Application. Analytical research is applied to analyze code-mixing in students speaking of tenth grade students at SMA N 1 Metro accademic year 2019/2020. The result shows that there are 23 out of 33 students use code-mixing in their speaking. It is found 45 code-mixing devided into three types including 21 Insertion which characterized by inserting one or more Indonesian vocabularies into an English sentence, 19 Alternation which characterized by the existence of clause or sentence alternation between Indonesian and English, and 5 Congruent Lexicalization which characterized by the existence of dialect from Indonesian inserted in students English Speaking. It is found that there are 4 factors of code-mixing namely interlocutor or the person whom they are talking to, culture or habit, confidence and lack of vocabulary.

Abstract

The study is aimed to find out whether the use of Stand upSequence Game is effective as the media in teaching vocabularymastery. The study used quasi-experimental design with the researchpopulation namely 22 female students of Budi Utomo Orphanage. The researcher conducted the systematic of purposive samplingand used pre-test and post-test as a research instrument. To analyze thepre-test and post-test score, the researcher used t-test analyzes. Theresult of the first hypothesis test which uses 5% significant degree, wherethe t-test obtained is (6.999) which also higher than that of t table (2.22).The second hypothesis test where the t-test obtained is (2.274) which ishigher than that of t table (2.08). It shows that the students who are taughtby Stand up Sequence Game having a higher score. In conclusion, thatteaching English vocabulary using Stand up Sequence Game is moreeffective than that of without using Stand up Sequence Game.

Abstract

The Influence of Documentary Video Toward Students Ability in Writing Descriptive Text Eleventh Grade At Senior High School 1 Kota Gajah Academic Year 2020/202. The urgency of technology integration has arisen due to the current pandemic break. With a sudden shift from conventional learning to virtual learning, less proper preparation for utilizing the technology integration may occur. The present study aimed at writing ability using documentary video as a medium. By applying experimental research with observation case study design in Senior High School 1 Kota Gajah, this study gained the data through questionnaires, writing tasks, and an interview. Brata in Annisa's (2019) documentary video is a form of audiovisual product that tells a daily phenomenon. This phenomenon deserves to be a reflection of the audience. The results of the study proved that the use of documentary videos as a medium in improving students' writing ability of descriptive texts, In the pre-test, the average score of the experimental group and the control group are 53.26 and 56.77. From the score of the two groups, the result shows that the experimental group is lowest than that of the control one. However, the result of the post-test of the experimental group is higher than that of the control group; they are 87.49 for the experimental group and 71.20 for the control group. There was a significant difference in student’s English writing skills that learned writing by using Documentary video and conventional media.

Abstract

This research aims to produce comic media product which is suitable for use by tenth grade students at second semester in English learning especially Narrative Text. This research used adaptation of development procedures by Sugiyono through seven stages of development. There are Potential and Problem, Data Collecting, Product Design, Design Validity, Design Improvements, Product Trial and Product Revision (revision 2). The research subject was the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Purbolinggo. Data collection was carried out by using a questionnaire and interview. The instrument of this research is in the form of validation sheet and assessment sheet. The researcher used the tabulation and calculating the average score as Data analysis techniques. The comic media which is developed has been feasible to be applied in learning after getting a good score in validation stage. The average scores of of the validation I of the material experts and media experts are 4.00 and 3.70 and the average scores of of the validation II of the material experts and media experts are 4,13 and 3,93 respectively. In addition, assessments that was given to students at the product trial stage obtained good score with an average score 4,02. In conclusion, the Fairy Tale comic is a comic media in teaching English especially Narrative Text. It is developed by using the adaptation of development procedures by Sugiyono. The Fairy Tale Comic can fulfill the objectives of the research and attract students' interest and motivation in learning English. It is suggested that the next researchers develop the comic media for other materials of Englsih and have more than one school as the subject of research in assessing the comic so the revision can be gained from different perspective of students.

Abstract

Grammatical cohesion is the combination of sentences that formed by grammatical aspect. Language can produce two kinds there are spoken and written The objectives of this research are to describe the types of reference and subtitution and discover the most frequently types of reference and subtitution that used in The Jakarta Post news. Grammatical cohesion is the object of this research. The news in The Jakarta Post is the subject of this research. The method of this research is Qualitative research. The result of this study are found 436 of grammatical cohesion consist of reference were 434 data, and substitution are 2 data. The most frequently types of using grammatical cohesion is demonstrative reference with the percentage 60.80% of. The used of grammatical cohesion are personal reference showed of 27.80 % data, comparative reference showed of 11% data, nominal substitution showed of 0.20% data, verbal substitution found of 0.20% data and causal substitution with the percentage 0%. Based on the data it can be concluded that in The Jakarta Post found all the grammatical cohesion except causal substitution.

Abstract

The goal is to identify the problems of students in tenth grade natural science 1 to improve the quality of learning, especially for vocabulary. The teacher provides students with a worksheet contain words such as synnonim, antonym and part of speech of the words. This research is Classroom Action Research. Those were reconnaissance, planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 33 students at tenth grade natural science 1 of SMA Negeri 4 Metro. The criteria of succes determines by researcher successful if 75% of 33 students follow the learning process well and also give good responses to the teacher and if the 75% from 33 students get score 70. The research was done in two cycles and obtained the qualitative and quantitative data. The data collection instruments were observation checklists, interview guidelines, and tests. The data were in the observation checklists, interview transcripts, and scores.The result of the research showed that the use of frontloading strategy in the teaching and learning process significantly improved the students’ vocabulary mastery. the students could improve their vocabulary mastery by looking for vocabulary related to the picture given and also the picture was described then the students entered it as the KWL format which is one of the frontloading srategies. Based on the quantitative data, the students’ mean value for the vocabulary skills improved. In the pre – test, the students’ mean value was 61.96 Then, after Cycle 1 (post – test 1), the students’ mean value of post – test 1 was 68.33 . At last, after Cycle 2 (post – test 2), the students’ mean value in the post – test 2 was 86.21 . In conclusion, the use of frontloading strategy can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery significantly.
