Abstract

The research aimed to assess English teachers' perceptions of the textbook “Language Improvement for English Teachers” by the British Council, focusing on its role in fostering essential language skills for educators. Using a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale, data were collected from 20 active English teachers. The findings showed that teachers generally valued the textbook's engaging topics, clear instructions, and practical design, though some wanted more task variety to address different learner needs. While the textbook effectively integrated key skills, particularly vocabulary and pronunciation, teachers noted a lack of listening activities. The study also received mixed feedback on cultural relevance, indicating a need for better contextual alignment for Indonesian learners. Overall, the textbook was praised as a valuable classroom resource, especially for lesson planning and supporting teachers' pedagogical goals.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of metaphorical euphemisms in Instagram comments related to Anies Baswedan, a prominent figure in Indonesian politics. The aim is to analyze how netizens use euphemisms to navigate sensitive political discourse in a digital context. Metaphorical euphemisms, defined as expressions that soften or reframe controversial or harsh topics, play a significant role in managing political expression. The research uses a qualitative content analysis approach to examine 15 Instagram comments, categorizing euphemisms into three types: analogy, distortion, and borrowing (Allan & Burridge, 2020). The findings reveal that distortion euphemisms were most common (46.67%), followed by analogy euphemisms (40%) and borrowing euphemisms (13.33%). Distortion euphemisms often reframed negative political situations in a more acceptable or humorous light, while analogy euphemisms employed vivid comparisons to communicate complex ideas in a relatable manner. Borrowing euphemisms utilized terms from other contexts to soften their meaning. The study emphasizes the importance of these linguistic strategies in fostering constructive dialogue while mitigating conflict in politically polarized environments. The findings contribute to understanding how euphemisms function in digital political communication, revealing the creativity of netizens in expressing their views. This research offers insights into the role of language in shaping public opinion and engagement in the digital age.

Abstract

The study explored the correlation between listening intensity and perceived vocabulary acquisition among EFL learners. Over a two-week period, 20-30 college students recorded their daily listening habits and self-assessed their vocabulary growth through weekly surveys. Listening intensity was measured using daily logs, while vocabulary acquisition was evaluated based on students’ self-reports. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between time spent listening and vocabulary gains. The results suggest that higher listening intensity correlates with increased vocabulary acquisition. These findings provide valuable insights for language teachers in developing more effective listening strategies to enhance vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Advertisements play a significant role in shaping how we perceive products and make decisions. This study explores how two Dancow advertisements—Dancow 1+ Imunutri and Dancow Fortigro Coklat—use language and visuals to connect with their audiences. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, the data, which includes transcribed dialogues and visuals, were taken from the SOOYA CHAN YouTube channel. The findings reveal that while both ads emphasize key nutrients like DHA and iron, they speak to parents in different ways. The Dancow 1+ Imunutri ad focuses on affordability and nutrition for toddlers, reassuring parents of their role in supporting early growth. Meanwhile, the Dancow Fortigro Coklat ad highlights taste and cognitive benefits for school-aged children, connecting with parents’ hopes for their kids’ education and enthusiasm. These findings show how advertisements reflect societal values, especially the central role of mothers in nurturing their children. With only two ads analysed due to time constraints, future studies could look at a broader range of advertisements and explore how audiences respond to them to better understand marketing strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size among EFL students, focusing on the impact of reading English academic articles. Using a quantitative approach with a correlational descriptive design, this research involved EFL students at IAIN Palangka Raya. Participants completed two instruments: Schmitt’s (2000) Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) to identify the strategies students use, and Beglar and Nation’s (2013) Vocabulary Size Test (VST) to measure vocabulary knowledge. The results indicate that reading English academic articles positively influences vocabulary development, particularly in acquiring high and medium-frequency words with an average of 78/100. Social Strategy emerged as the most widely used approach, followed by Determination and Metacognitive Strategies. These strategies help students understand new vocabulary through discussions with peers or lecturers, analyzing context, and utilizing resources such as dictionaries or glossaries. The correlation analysis between Vocabulary Learning Strategies and Vocabulary Size (r = 0.336) shows a moderate positive relationship, suggesting that these strategies play a role in enhancing vocabulary size. However, the findings also imply that other factors may contribute to vocabulary acquisition. Overall, this study highlights the importance of frequent reading and targeted vocabulary learning strategies for improving EFL students' vocabulary knowledge, providing valuable insights for more effective language instruction.

Abstract

Barack Obama's A More Perfect Union speech is examined in this article using both a descriptive quantitative and rhetorical approach. The speech, delivered in 2008 during his presidential campaign, addressed racial tensions and called for togetherness in the midst of political upheaval. The study uses descriptive quantitative analysis to track linguistic patterns like word frequency and sentence structure, as well as rhetorical analysis to investigate Obama's use of ethos, pathos, and logos. According to the findings, Obama's strategic use of inclusive language, emotive appeals, and logical reasons strengthens his unifying message. This dual-method approach shows the speech's effectiveness in addressing polarizing issues while also providing insights into the broader effects of political discourse in promoting societal advancement. In "A More Perfect Union," Barack Obama highlights the value of unity as the cornerstone of national advancement. He uses the phrase "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union," which appears in the U.S. Constitution, as a reminder that aiming for perfection is a continuous process that has been carried out through the ages. Obama makes the case that history demonstrates that unity and teamwork may bring the nation closer to its values, even while he acknowledges that the country may never reach complete perfection. Obama also talks about the profound effects of racial injustice throughout American history. He talks about how injustice's legacy still has an impact on people's lives today and exhorts them to comprehend its causes rather than escalating the gap. "The anger is powerful and real," he says. And simply wishing it away exacerbates the misperception." With this, he challenges Americans to face racial complexity with compassion and understanding. The speech's end is centered on optimism and a call to action. "We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism," Obama says, urging the country to reject divisive politics. Alternatively, we can unite throughout this election and declare, "Not this time." A universal moral precept, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," is cited by him to emphasize the value of compassion and unity in creating a better future. Obama's credibility (ethos) is established through personal anecdotes in the speech. As the son of a White mother from Kansas and a Black father from Kenya, he identifies as having a mixed-race heritage. His statement, "This nation is more than the sum of its parts," highlights the fact that diversity in America is a strength rather than a problem.

Abstract

This paper investigates the importance of context in understanding pragmatic meanings. Adopting a literature review approach with an interpretive framework, the study collects data by examining the works of scholars to uncover various perspectives on context. The analysis process involves identifying key theories, organizing the findings, interpreting the outcomes, and composing the journal article. The research identifies 11 key aspects of context that influence the interpretation of pragmatic meanings. The findings highlight the fundamental difference between semantic and pragmatic meaning, emphasizing that pragmatic meaning is always shaped by context. Therefore, it concludes that pragmatic meaning is heavily dependent on extra-lingual factors.    Keywords: context, interpretive approach, extra-lingual factors, pragmatic meaning.
