Abstract

Many students are not comfortable studying mathematics and think mathematics is a boring subject. So students do not have good motivation in learning mathematics. This is due to the inhumane teaching of mathematics. This research was conducted to assess students' motivation when learning humanistic mathematics based on peer tutors. This research is experimental research with a one group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected using the Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction (ARCS) motivation questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test because the data obtained were not normally distributed. The results obtained that the value of sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 0.05), which means that the hypothesis is accepted. So that there is a significant comparison between students' mathematics learning motivation before and after applying humanistic mathematics learning based on peer tutors or there is a significant influence between peer tutor-based humanistic mathematics learning on students' mathematics learning motivation.

Abstract

Science instruction is required to be able to develop critical thinking skills and solve various authentic problems. However, based on the preliminary study results, the science learning process does not emphasize the development of critical thinking skills. Therefore, this study aims to produce appropriate POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) based authentic instructional package that are valid, practical, and effective to improve students' critical thinking skills. This research is educational development research using Tessmers' development model, which includes self-evaluation, expert test, individual test, small group test, and field test. The subjects of the research trial were eight students of class VIIIE and 29 students of class VIIIF of SMPN 33 Banjarmasin. The research data were obtained by expert testing on assessment using validation instruments, observations on practicality assessment using RPP implementation instruments, and tests on effectiveness assessment using critical LP instruments. The results of the data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively and the results obtained that the learning tools were categorized as very valid, practical, and effective. Therefore, a POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) based authentic problem instructional package is feasible to improve students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The development of education in the 21st century requires educators and students to be able to improve critical thinking skills. The process of improving critical thinking skills requires a learning model, one of which is through a guided inquiry model. The application of the inquiry model is able to train students to have the ability to think about something new so that they can solve students' own concepts or ideas. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the guided inquiry model on students' critical thinking skills. Data collection techniques were carried out by browsing various articles related to the inquiry model and critical thinking skills through Google, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The search results obtained 35 articles or related journals. Data analysis technique was carried out in a quantitative descriptive manner using the help of Microsoft Excel and JASP applications. The results showed that the results of the analysis using the random effect had a significant positive effect or correlation between the guided inquiry model on students' critical thinking skills in science lessons. The results of the egger test and fail safe N analysis show that there is no publication bias in the meta-analytical studies discussed, so that the analyzed meta-analytical studies can be scientifically justified.
