Abstract

In the era of globalization, the complexity of social, economic, and environmental challenges has resulted in the decline of the role of traditional religious institutions, as well as the emergence of secularism and religious pluralism. This study aims to reveal the response of religion to the phenomena of secularization, conflict, and economic inequality in the 21st century with a qualitative approach through literature studies. The results of the study indicate that secularism has become a contemporary issue, with a decline in religious affiliation among the younger generation, especially in Europe; however, projections for 2050 show a resurgence of religious adherents and an important role for religion in society. In addition, increasing religious diversity creates challenges and tensions between communities, but many religions respond by building solidarity through dialogue and peace campaigns. Amidst the increasing economic gap, religions respond by reviewing relevant teachings and principles, such as the simplicity movement that combines spiritual values with ways of earning a living, ethical education in business, and playing an active role in anti-poverty campaigns and other social issues. This paper adds insight into the role of religion in building sustainable social solidarity and economic ethics amidst contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of tolerance held by students at UIN Bandung and Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR), two religiously affiliated postsecondary educational establishments in Bandung. The data for this research was gathered through document reviews and interviews using a qualitative methodology. Fifty students from UIN Bandung and fifty from UNPAR Bandung were interviewed. This study discovers that students' perceptions of their religious texts—the Bible and the Qur'an—have an impact on how tolerant they are Socially, it is discovered that Indonesians' conception of tolerance has a national dimension based on the national ideology. Religious and social concepts provide these kids with the foundation for tolerance in a variety of ways. Students at UIN Bandung continue to exhibit tolerance, but only within the framework of their religion—Islam. On the other hand, tolerance is practiced in both the social and individual environments at UNPAR, a campus that is more diverse and cosmopolitan. Collaboration strengthens the two student groups' tolerant attitudes. This collaboration later initiated the birth of the Halaqah Damai (Circle of Peace) as a forum for the two student groups to have dialogue and understand the essence of religious tolerance to be disseminated in their respective environments.

Abstract

This research examines the evolution of philosophical interpretation (tafsir falsafi) from the classical to the modern period within the context of the Islamic intellectual heritage. Philosophical interpretation, integral to the journey of Muslim scholars since the classical era, serves as a "gateway" to the progress of Islamic thought. However, the philosophical nature of this interpretation has sparked controversy and is deemed problematic from an epistemological perspective, becoming a focal point of debate among the Muslim community. The research employs a library research method, utilizing various literature sources as supporting evidence, with a primary focus on both primary and secondary data. The findings indicate that the emergence of philosophical interpretation is linked to the translation of Greek works into Arabic. Some fully reject or accept it, while others integrate it with Eastern traditions. Overall, a comprehensive interpretation fully incorporating the philosophical style has not been found; usually, this style is expressed separately through writings that do not specifically interpret the Quran. The epistemology of early-generation philosophical interpretation tends to be peripatetic, involving the use of reason in discussing aspects such as divinity, the afterlife, and scientific disciplines. Some figures or philosophers relevant to the philosophical interpretation of Quranic verses include al-Kindi, al-Farabi, the Ikhwan al-Shafa order, and Ibn Sina.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multicultural society religious, ethnic and cultural, so it is necessary to have mutual respect and respect to respond to these differences. Islam is a religion that the Indonesian people widely embrace, so it is necessary to have a tolerant attitude in responding to a multicultural society. Therefore, from this problem, the author is interested in studying the concept of tolerance from an Islamic perspective. The method used in this writing is the study of literature by examining more deeply both from books, articles and other media related to the theme of writing. From the results of this discussion, it can be concluded that tolerance is a commendable attitude that must be possessed by every human being in daily life, where fellow human beings respect each other within the boundaries outlined by Islam. The teachings of Islam always command its people to maintain good relations with others, including other believers. Islam was born with universal and tolerant teaching values.

Abstract

Religious absolutism is one of the epistemological roots behind various acts of religious intolerance that threaten the order of life in a plural, dynamic, tolerant and inclusive democratic society. This research is a study of philosophical literature that explores the ideas of William James's pragmatic theory of truth and finds its relevance to religious education in order to anticipate symptoms of religious absolutism. James challenged the absolutism of truth that had been maintained for centuries in the Western philosophical tradition. Truth does not lie in ideas or notions, but rather in the process or event of verification and validation of those ideas or notions in experience. He offers a pragmatic concept of truth that takes into account the practical consequences of ideas in experience. For him, truth should be dynamic, open, continuously growing and plural. Inspired by James' ideas, the author conveys the importance of religious truth and religious education interpreted in a more pragmatic framework. Religious truth is not only built from religious dogma or doctrine but is a reflective and dialogical process through the experience of faith, which is formed in relation to other truths. In a contemporary pluralistic society, religious education cannot be reduced to simply teaching religious doctrine or dogma. Religious education needs to be carried out within a pragmatic framework as a form of religious moderation education that pays attention to efforts to develop critical-reflective abilities to grow faith in a sustainable manner, creatively interpreting human experience, as well as forming human ethical character to maintain a harmonious life together.

Abstract

The existence of the philosophical interpretation (tafsir falsafi) has sparked serious debates among scholars, who consider it too radical and potentially harmful to the community due to its freedom in utilizing reason. However, through this research, we explore that the diversity in interpreting the Quran is actually a result of human thought, especially in the realm of philosophy, as the quest for meaning in the Quran fundamentally involves philosophical thinking. The objective of this research is to refute views that label philosophical interpretation as a radical and dangerous approach merely because it is associated with the philosophy of that time, especially that which originated from historically non-Islamic Greek philosophy. The research methodology employed is a literature study (library research), involving the collection and screening of data from various sources to be presented systematically. With this argumentation, we aim to prove that philosophical interpretation significantly contributes to enriching the understanding of the Quran. The philosophy that dominates in this interpretation is not something deviant or perilous in interpreting the verses of the Quran but rather a reflection of philosophical thought applied to the object of justification, namely the Quran itself, and not the other way around. The diversity in philosophical approaches contributes significantly to the development of philosophical thought related to the Quran.

Abstract

This research was conducted departing from the dynamics of the problem in terms of various aspects and values regarding isra'iliyyat infiltration in interpretation. There are so many views that tend to be negative about it. Even there is another side, considering that it is a necessity of acculturation in socio-cultural life. This study used the library research method by collecting, processing, and inducing data in accordance with the discussion from various sources of literature, namely descriptive analysis. The purpose of this study is to mediate views regarding scientific substance in isra'iliyyat and the correlation of its infiltration into the interpretation of the Qur'an, which has been going on for a long time. So with this, it can be found values that correspond from the isra'iliyyat aspect with the basic values in the interpretation of the Qur'an. It is also hoped that this will stimulate the birth of a more intense study to trace isra'iliyyat genealogy whose purity is still maintained; of course, it does not mean to rule out the study of texts, namely the Al-Qur'an and al-Hadith. Seeing the material in its historical reality, isra'iliyyat and interpretation cannot be completely separated. This is because it has become a general reality that every culture will experience acculturation assimilation. Especially when this isra'iliyyat is interpreted etymologically as whatever is contained in the holy book of the people of the book from all its aspects.

Abstract

This study examines a digital da'wah model promoting religious moderation through the yellow book chanting tradition broadcasted via live streaming on YouTube channels, including Al-Bahjah TV, Ngaji Gus Baha Official, and Ulil Abshar Abdalla. Employing a qualitative approach within a critical paradigm, the research analyzes the historical, social, cultural, economic, and political contexts of digital da'wah. The sorogan tradition is explored using descriptive-qualitative methods and virtual ethnography to capture online interactions. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, focus group discussions, and documentary analysis. Findings reveal that these channels effectively strengthen religious knowledge among the younger generation through engaging content and innovative visual communication. The sorogan tradition fosters virtual social relationships at individual and group levels, contributing to a relevant da'wah ecosystem in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of social media in Islamic preaching in the digital age and the challenges faced in spreading religious messages through digital platforms. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research relies on a literature review to collect secondary data related to the use of media in preaching. The findings indicate that social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have opened significant opportunities for preaching to reach a global audience effectively and creatively. However, the study also identifies challenges related to message distortion, lack of content credibility, and the dissemination of inaccurate information. This research proposes strategic guidelines to maximize the potential of social media in spreading Islamic values while mitigating possible risks. In conclusion, social media holds great potential for preaching, but it requires a cautious and responsible approach to ensure that religious messages remain accurate and beneficial. It is recommended that preachers utilize social media creatively while maintaining the essence and integrity of religious teachings.

Abstract

Tafsir, examined in terms of its methods, is divided into two categories: general and specific methods. In general, discussions on the interpretation of the Qur'an can be conducted through four methods: Ijmali (global), tahlili (analytical), muqaran (comparative), and maudu'i (thematic). One of these four methods is the muqaran method, which means comparative or comparative analysis. The discussion of muqaran explains the comparison between one interpretation and another, whether related to Quranic verses with other Quranic verses, verses with hadiths, and the opinions of commentators. The purpose of this research is to present various opinions related to the muqaran method, its emergence, foundation, and urgency, as well as its steps and the strengths and weaknesses of muqaran interpretation. This research is qualitative and employs library research by referring to previous studies. The findings indicate that muqaran interpretation has been practiced since the time of Prophet Muhammad until the present day. Muqaran interpretation is also crucial for appreciating its inherent advantages.
